AS THE WORLD’S ORIGINAL FAIR TRADER, we are committed to alleviating poverty around the world, continuing the efforts begun by our pioneering founder Edna Ruth Byler. In 1946, after traveling abroad and meeting women who struggled to find jobs and feed their families, she began selling their traditional embroidery work to friends and neighbors. The project that started in the trunk of her car is now known as Ten Thousand Villages and provides income to 20,000 craftspeople in 30 developing countries.

For the past 70 years, Ten Thousand Villages has worked to be ethical at every step of our maker-centered business, giving people around the world a chance to make a better life.
