WHO IS R.D. BURMAN AND WHY SHOULD WE KNOW?

• Full name: Rahul Dev Burman • Born June 27, 1939 in Kolkata (Calcutta)

• Son of S.D. Burman (music director from 50’s-70’s) • Exposed to world of music at young age • Studied sarod by Ustad Ali Akbar Khan • Studied Tabla under Samata Prasard • Composed first tune at age 9 (later used in Funtoosh) • Nickname: Panchman Da (fifth note)

EARLY STAGES• Worked under father as assistant: Kaagaz Ke Phool (1960,) Tere Ghar Ke

PANCHMAN DA IS IMMORTAL • January 4, 1994 Burman passed away due to heart attack (age 54) • Just completed 1942 a Love Story (1994) • Today many of his songs are remixed or new songs copying style • Current singers view him as in influence (Sonu Nigam, Shankar-Eshaan-Loy

• Born January 6, 1967 in Madras (Chennai) as A.S. Dileep Kumar • Started learning piano at age 4 • Age 11 joined Ilaiaraaja’s musical troupe playing keyboard • Studied music at Trinity College of Music at Oxford University • Converged to Islam in 1987 thus changed his name
