Dear Residents of Thesman Communities,

I hope this letter finds you and yours in good health, mind, and spirit. We continue to monitor and track the improved conditions in each of our communities and the states we operate. Given the continued improvement of COVID-19 cases and the increased vaccination rates, we have decided that it is now time to proceed to the next level of re-opening.

Effective May 1st, 2021, all community clubhouse and amenities will resume their normal operating hours.

CLUBHOUSE: 7:00 AM TO 10:00 PM, MONDAY THROUGH SUNDAY

OUTDOOR AMENITIES: 7:00 AM UNTIL 10:00 PM, MONDAY THROUGH SUNDAY

With that said, there will still be two important COVID-19 protocols in place to ensure the added and continued safety of our residents. The first is the use of face coverings/masks when entering the clubhouse and utilizing facilities indoors. The second is to practice social distancing where possible. Seating and tickets sales for events will still be limited in order to adhere to the social distancing requirements.

Additionally, residents will be allowed to invite up to 4 family members or visitors to any community event and/or facility (indoor & outdoor) provided resident(s) accompany these guests. Please limit guests/visitors to no more than 4 per household per day. Please ensure that masks are worn when indoors and where social distancing is not practical. As a reminder, we ask that everyone observe and practice social distancing from others of at least 6 feet.

We are excited about the continued return to normalcy; however, it is important to note that the easing of these COVID-19 related protocols is predicated on everyone following the rules and adhering to the mask and social distancing protocols. If we have instances of non-compliance and disregard for the remaining COVID-19 protocols, we will be forced to return to the limited hours and reverse the easing of restriction on clubhouse amenities.

We want to thank everyone for their continued patience and understanding as we near what is hopefully the end of this tragic pandemic.

Take good care!!

Leilani Carpenter # 3774 East has a new resident in # 377!

Please help me welcome Leilani Carpenter, who packed up 75 boxes and moved from Yorba Linda, CA to Palmas del Sol, AKA “PDS”. Leilani retired from her career of 36 years as an insurance underwriter for Allstate insurance Company. She has an adult

son, adult grandson back in CA, as well as a stepson living in Hollywood, CA. She chose PDS for the active lifestyle and the warm weather and in addition she has friends & family in Mesa. Leilani is single and her hobbies include making greeting cards and gardening. After she finishes unpacking and gets settled, she wants to contribute to this great community by helping PDS residents with errands and deliveries for those who no longer drive. What a welcome addition to the best community in the East valley Leilani will be! She truly represents the generous & giving spirit PDS is known for. So when you see Leilani around the community or the clubhouse, please smile and wave to welcome her.

Linda Gollwitzer # 79Arizona native, Linda Gollwitzer,

is our newest resident on 4 West, having purchased # 79. One of the questions on the interview form is, “What attracted you to PDS?” In Linda’s case, it’s family. She has a brother who is also a Palmas del Sol resident as well as a son and 3 granddaughters who live in the

area. Her fourth granddaughter lives in Sacramento, CA. Linda is now enjoying her retirement from her career as a default mortgage banking supervisor for Chase. Linda’s leisure time is spent gardening and painting Terra Cotta pots with figures of people and pets. Linda’s customer service experience makes her very organized as well as easy to get along with. The current love of her life is her dog, Schooner. Please help me welcome Linda to PDS by smiling, waving & greeting her when you see her around the community or at the clubhouse. Welcome to the best community in the East Valley, Linda!

BBQ GRILLS ON THE PATIOThe new gas grills have been installed and are available

for resident use. If you use the grills you will need to bring your own cooking utensils and brush for cleaning once you are done. Please note that the sink on the side of the building by the locked grills is considered part of the kitchen by the health department and is not available for use. The gas is set up on a timer. Instructions for use are as follows:1. Open the grill cover. 2. Turn on the timer which is the black knob located on

the back post. You will see a 1, 2, or 3, those are the hours. So, if you turn it to one the gas will stay on for 1 hour and then turn itself off. 3. There are (2) burners – light them one at a time by turning the knob to light and pressing the Ignitor button or the right. You will hear a “whoosh” sound when it lights. 4. Once you have finished grilling turn the two knobs to the off position. You don’t need to turn off the timer – it will go off on its own. 5. Clean the grill and close the cover. Happy Grilling!!

DVDsBeat the heat and watch a movie! There are a lot of DVD’s to choose from in the PDS library. Just bring the sleeve to the office and they will get the DVD for you. Did I mention they are free???

HAIR CUTTING BY RUTH GRIFFIN

Ruth had hip surgery on March 30 and will be out of commission for the next 3 months. We wish her well and look forward to having her back hopefully in June.

E-NUGGETJust for You! All PDS newcomers

and any other interested residents are encouraged to sign up for the Palmas del Sol’s on-line newsletter, the PDS e-Nugget. Anyone can contribute an article, a request, etc.! The Nugget - published just for residents here on McKellips - lists community and club activities, things to be bought, sold, given or traded, thank-you, recommendations on good spots to visit and/or eat and a good comics section called Smiles – as well as lots and lots of other information. Sign up is simple and there is no cost! Drop an e-mail request (including your name and lot number) to: [email protected] and the next issue will be on your computer early in the morning of the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month. We are proud to say that we have hundreds of subscribers, but there’s always room for more - including you.

LIBRARYThank you for providing lots of

new material for our users. You may have noticed that the paperback romance section is not as full as

we would like. It’s through your generosity that we can maintain our selection of paperback books. Again, thank you for your support. Having said that, you should be aware that some of the books we receive are too old to use. We try hard to keep our book selection current and anything older than ten years is considered out of date. These books are taken to non-profits in the area for resale in their stores. We would appreciate it if you would take these directly to any non-profit. We have fewer librarians since COVID and need your help.

We have started a new section for Guidepost Books. These are not the monthly magazines but the hard-bound books. You will find them above the Harlequin romance paperbacks. It’s our hope that we are meeting your expectations and continue to support the PDS Library. [Mike Morrill, Librarian, #394]

REMINDER OF FLICKR ACCESS

The easiest way I have found to access the PDS Flickr account to view and download PDS Event Photos is as follows:

1. In your browser, enter www.Flickr.com (NOTE: There is no “E” in Flickr!)

2. Enter PDS MESA in the search box near the top of the page.

3. Click on People in the white bar just below.

4. Click on PDS MESA in the pop-up box.

5. Click on Albums in the next screen.

6. Select and click on any one of the albums posted since 2015.

7. You can download the entire album or any one of the individual pictures by double-clicking on the down arrow with horizontal underline.

8. Select from several sizes of the photo and either print or move to a file or forward via email, etc.

9. Flickr may ask you to set up an account. If it does, go ahead and set it up. This is not an intrusive website. They don’t bug you very often.

10. Enjoy your photos!!

If you have any questions, feel free to email me at [email protected]. [Michael Rehfeld, #12]

The book for discussion in May is, “UPSTAIRS AT THE WHITE HOUSE: MY LIFE WITH THE FIRST LADIES”, by J.B. West and Mary Lynn Kotz:

“A New York Times bestseller: A fascinating behind-the-scenes look at life on Pennsylvania Avenue with America’s first families, by the man who spent nearly three decades in their midst J. B. West, chief usher of the White House, directed the operations and maintenance of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue-and coordinated its daily life-at the request of the president and his family. He directed state functions; planned parties, weddings and funerals, gardens and playgrounds, and extensive renovations; and with a large staff, supervised every activity in the presidential home. For twenty-eight years, first as assistant to the chief usher, then as chief usher, he witnessed national crises and triumphs, and interacted daily with six consecutive presidents and first ladies, their parents, children and grandchildren, and houseguests-including friends, relatives, and heads of state. In Upstairs at the White House, West offers an absorbing and novel glimpse at America’s first families, from the Roosevelts to the Kennedys and the Nixons. Alive with anecdotes ranging from the quotidian (Lyndon B. Johnson’s showerheads) to the tragic (the aftermath of John F. Kennedy’s assassination), West’s book is an enlightening and rich

account of the American history that took place just behind the Palladian doors of the North Portico.”

EYE GLASSES LIONS CLUB

Just a reminder that throughout the year the Lions Club and other volunteers collect used eyeglasses and deliver them to regional Eyeglass Recycling Centers. Most of the glasses are distributed to people in need in developing countries where they will have the greatest impact. So don’t forget to drop your old glasses off in the office or to Linda.

LAS PALMAS VETERANS GROUP

I sure hope the light I’m seeing at the end of the tunnel isn’t a train!

Looks like we’ve turned the corner and getting ahead of the covid issue.

For those of you leaving we wish you safe travels and God’s speed on a safe return.

There a several new face in the park. If you are acquainted with them, please let them know of the Las Palmas Veterans Group. They can contact me if they have any questions.

We have received several Flags for retirement, THANK YOU for those that did so. Please remember flying a soiled torn or otherwise damaged Flag is disrespectful to the Flag, the Nation and those who served it.

We are looking for input from our

veterans for the June News Letter on what it means to you to be a veteran. So please forward your thoughts and comments to me as quickly as possible.

So far this year our aluminum can recycling program has brought in $299.00 to benefit the Mesa Veterans Resource Center. THANK YOU for your continuous support.

It seems the covid restrictions had a slight up side. We held our Spring clothing drive on April 17th. Apparently :restrictive atmosphere” had some side ( and middle ) impacts. We did a drive by pick up program which has worked very well for us and the MVRC is very grateful for everyone’s donations

If I don’t get to see you before you leave have a safe journey back north. Keith

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Things are picking up here at LP and we need your help! WALKING & BIKINGWith so many people walking

and bike riding here are some good thinks to remember:

WALKING: If you are on a road either with or without a shoulder you should always walk against traffic … that is, vehicles should be driving toward you. According to the National Center for Safe Routes to School www.saferoutesinfo.org, the reason is this: “(walking against traffic) presents opportunities to establish eye contact with approaching motorists and make quick judgments to protect oneself.” Plus, in the evening it would be great if the walkers wore light or reflective clothing and carried some sort of light.

BIKING: When you are on a bicycle, think of yourself as another vehicle on the road. So, if you are another vehicle, you should be biking WITH traffic. Don’t make up traffic rules as you bike along because erratic biking behavior puts you at risk for crashes (studies have shown that a risk of a crash increases FIVE TIMES when you ride without regard for rules of traffic). Your goal is blend in with the traffic and help it flow easily. While there may be a fear that you’ll be hit from behind by oncoming traffic, the reality is that rear-end collisions between vehicles and bicycles are rare; the

most frequent cause of car-bike crashes are from bicyclists riding on the left side of the road. So, remember: Ride on the right.

OLD FLAGS For proper disposal of that

worn out, tired old American flag, contact Sheila Dye, Unit 51.

BBQ GRILLS ON THE PATIO

The gas grills are available for resident use. If you use the grills you will need to bring your own cooking utensils and brush for cleaning once you are done. Please note that the sink on the side of the building is considered part of the kitchen by the health department and is not available for use. The gas is set up on a timer. Instructions for use are as follows: 1. Open the grill cover. 2. Turn on the timer which is the black knob located on the back post. 3.There are two burners – light them one at a time by turning the knob to light and pressing the Ignitor button on the right. You will hear a “whoosh” sound when it lights. 4. Once you have finished grilling turn the two knobs to the off position. You don’t need to turn off the timer – it will go off on its own. 5. Clean the grill and close the cover. Happy Grilling!!!!

We all know that old saying April showers bring May Flowers. We are still living in difficult times, but yet have so much to be thankful for. I am thankful for my staff who have shown up daily, worked hard to keep things so clean, and sanitized, make sure things are in good working order, entertain us and keep things running smoothly.

I am thankful for our owners and our upper management who have worked diligently to stay on top of all of the governor’s executive orders and the guidelines put in place by the CDC, to create protocols that have kept us safe and free of Covid 19 here

at Las Palmas. I am thankful for the residents, who have been patient during

all of this, who have gone that extra mile to help a neighbor and who continue to do good deeds to bring a smile to someone’s face.

I am thankful for all the frontline workers out their doing their part to take care of those who actually had Covid 19 and to provide those of us who didn’t with the vaccine so we can be safe.

I wish I had answers but none of us have a crystal ball and therefore I have no idea how much longer we will have to continue with the current protocols put in place by our upper management team.

What I do know is that the protocols, while it seems cumbersome and irritating to some of you it is the best way, we can keep everyone safe and hopefully continue to keep COVID-19 out of our building.

Here are a few tips for your safety: Take everyday actions before, during, and after the event to protect yourself and others:

• Stay home if you are sick or not feeling well..• Avoid crowds and people who are sick. • Wear a mask • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed

hands. • Wash your hands often for at least 20 seconds.

I would like to think this will all be over by summer and while it may not seem like it’s time to stop and smell the flowers just yet I can assure you once it is, we will have a BIG celebration!

A professor gives a surprise test-- but there are no questions on the paper – just a black dot in the center of the page. “I want you to write a few lines about what you see.”

Puzzled, the students proceed. Afterwards, the professor read their thoughts out loud. Without exception, everyone had written about the black dot, mentioning its position, size and so on.

Then he said “All of you focused on the black dot. No one wrote about the white part of the paper. The same thing happens in our lives. We all have a white paper full of possibilities to learn from, yet we always focus on the dark spots. We have so many reasons to celebrate-- our parents, co-workers, friends, good health, a good job, the miracles we witness every day. Why obsess about the dark spots – our disappointments, our frustrations, our fears and anxieties? Take your eyes away from the black dots of your life. Pay attention to the brighter side of life and let positivity govern your thoughts.”

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

19SV

It’s so hard to believe it’s May already. Seems like we just celebrated New Years.

May is filled with holidays including May Day, Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, Armed Forces Day, and Cinco De Mayo. Hope you have lots of fun May plans.

The 4 corner inspections have begun. Weeds are beginning to pop, some excessive yard art, homes that need painted, torn screens, missing plant life, and unapproved storage have all been noted. Please make sure your lot and home are being well maintained and you are keeping up with your yard work. If you receive a letter from me; please understand that we do not send letters to be mean, but rather to adhere to the community standards by keeping our community looking beautiful.

It has been great seeing grandkids and families in the community again. Please keep in mind that children’s pool hours are 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM -5:00 PM. Guest’s and nonresidents may only be in the Pool if you are with them.

I hope everyone has a wonderful May! Happy Mother’s Day to all the blessed mothers and grandmothers!

Anne Mirich, Community Manager

CLUBS & ACTIVITIES

Terry & J.R. Hawks Lot #9

Terry & J.R. moved to Palmas Del Sol East in February of 2021 from Belle Fourche in the North West corner of South Dakota. They chose PDSE for its resort like amenities, mountain views, the location of their homesite, the friendly people and proximity to friends in the area. Terry and J.R. have 2 daughters and 4 grandchildren. Sharing their home is a little 3-year-old miniature Australian Shepard – Lexi. Prior to her retirement, Terry worked as a Business Manager for a Chevrolet Dealership for over 23 years. J.R. was also in the automotive industry. For over 27 years he worked as a car salesman for a Ford/Dodge/Jeep Dealership that sold cars, trucks, farm tractors and even hay balers. In J.R.’s younger years he was an accomplished Steer Roper. J.R. also enjoys Walleye and trout fishing. J.R. can also repair your chipped windshield. Terry enjoys hiking, bowling and most of all spending time with family. Terry and J.R. have always enjoyed their

vacations to Playa Del Carmen, Mexico and are looking forward to their next visit. Terry is looking forward to taking part various PDSE activities: Bunco, Bingo, Pickleball, Bocce Ball and has already started in Water Aerobics. Give our new neighbors a big Palmas Del Sol East Welcome!

Dave & Brandy MahanLot #147

Dave and Brandy moved to Palmas Del Sol East in March of 2021 from Indian Wells California and prior to that they lived in the Denver Colorado area for many years where they raised their family. Dave grew up in the Phoenix area, and Brandy is a native of Colorado. They chose PDSE for its proximity to the mountains, the open country and small-town feel. In addition, they appreciated the resort like atmosphere, wide streets, and nicely landscaped home sites of PDSE. Dave and Brandy have two sons and 4 grandchildren. Sharing their new home is 10-year-old Rupert, a Chihuahua / Pug

mix little dog. Dave has worked in the construction industry for the last 37 years and is currently Vice President of a company that specializes in Structural Precast Concrete. Brandy is now retired from a career in Business Development for various industries and companies. Dave enjoys working out in his home gym, and woodworking, doing primarily rough carpentry work. Dave also collects antique tools and guns. Brandy enjoys painting with acrylics and oils and is a wonderful decorator. Having played tennis in their earlier years, Brandy and Dave are looking forward to learning and playing pickleball. In closing, Dave and Brandy consider themselves to be just old fashion, conservative country folks and are looking forward to meeting new friends at PDSE. Give these fine people a big PDSE Welcome!

Don & Rita SauerLot #80

Don and Rita Sauer moved to Palmas Del Sol East in December of 2020 as part time residents after 5 years as part time residents at

Valle del Oro RV Resort in Mesa. Don and Rita call Sioux Falls South Dakota home, but hope someday to call PDSE their full-time home. They decided on PDSE after several years of consideration. They chose PDSE for its large homesites, residential atmosphere, and they were tired of always feeling like they were camping at Valle del Oro. Don and Rita have 3 sons and 11 grandchildren. One of the sons and 4 of the grand kids live in Tempe. Prior to retirement Don worked as a Civil Engineer for 32 years for the City of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. For 15 years, Rita worked as a Librarian Technician for the City of Sioux Falls. Rita enjoys Diamond Painting and is very skilled at Cake Decorating. (If you are not sure what Diamond Painting is, you need to look it up, it is pretty amazing.) Utilizing his father’s tools, Don enjoys Leather Working, along with golf and fishing. Don also considers himself to be very analytical, (no doubt a great trait for a civil engineer). Back in South Dakota, both Don and Rita enjoy camping in their 5th wheel. Rita is looking forward to PDSE BINGO starting back up again in the fall and learning to play BUNCO. Give these nice folks a big PDSE Welcome before they must return to South Dakota!

Dear PDSE Residents, April showers bring May flowers, so what do May flowers bring?

GREAT NEWS!!!!! We are re-opening our facilities! A letter was sent out in mid April announcing our indoor and outdoor amenities will be open from 7:00am to 10:00pm daily. SOME Covid restrictions will still be in place: Mask wearing is required to enter the clubhouse, and hand sanitizing is also a must. We will continue to maintain social distancing which means Covid occupancy standards still apply inside the clubhouse. Limited numbers will still be observed in each room. If you have specific questions, please contact the office.

I have had a large amount of sewer inquiries and reports recently. Each time I send maintenance out to inspect, I am getting the same report: WIPES ARE CAUSING THE ISSUES. DO NOT flush any type of wipe

down your toilet. Clorox type wipes, make-up wipes, baby wipes or ANY TYPE of wipe. They clog our sewer lines. Toilet tissue is the ONLY acceptable thing to be flushed. Please utilize your trash cans for anything else. Pumping of the septic tanks is costly, and while we do have scheduled service, additional pumps that are required due to negligence are increasing and the cost is as well.

If you have not yet picked up your 2021 vehicle stickers, they are available at the office. You will need to fill out a form with your vehicle information before a sticker will be issued. We want to verify that our system is updated with correct vehicle information. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Monsoon is approaching, which means rainfall will be plentiful and so will plant growth and weeds. Trimming and weeding will need be done more often during this time. If you need assistance with landscaping, please contact the office and we can help you find someone who can help.

Everyone have a marvelous May! Buffy Lewis, Community Manager

RESIDENT CORNER Congratulations to Barbara Cerasco (Lot #19) for being the Lucky Winner of the $100 Gift Basket donated by Hatfield Medical Group. The basket looked Amazing! Special thank you to Hatfield Medical Group for being one our dedicated Sponsors.

6:00PM Program – Ropin’! Ridin’! Latin! Arizona Ranch Schools 1902-1941 – In 1800s, American immigrants built corporate empires with hard work, courage and self-reliance. As these men of wealth and power grew old, they wanted their progeny to take over the family business. But their sons and grandsons were spoiled, lazy and living in pampered and protected shells. Experts recommended these boys be sent to rugged and untamed Arizona Territory for a “manly education”. The Evans Ranch School for Boys opened in Mesa in 1902. It was the first preparatory school in Arizona and the most elite in the nation. The school not only prepared boys for prestigious Ivy League schools, it also challenged them with horseback riding, camping trips, cattle wrangling, marksmanship and mule packing. Don’t miss this interesting and fascinating program.

THE “RED” FRIDAY BREAKFAST GROUP

Friday, 8:30AM - IHOP Restaurant – 2100 S. Power Rd, Mesa

Coordinators – Dick Nations, Richard Bartlow

Each Friday morning, a LPG men’s group meets for a breakfast social adorned in Red Shirts. The group is comprised of both U.S. veterans and non-veterans, but all share a common goal each Friday, and that is to remember and honor all U.S. military personnel that are currently deployed overseas.

RED is an acronym that stands for REMEMBER EVERYONE DEPLOYED. R.E.D. Friday was created to remind people of our heroes overseas and to show that we are thinking of them. Men, women and children across the country wear red every Friday to serve as a reminder and to spread the message of how important it is that we keep our troops in our thoughts and prayers.

Troop morale is as important as their intense training. If morale is low, mistakes are made and our service members may suffer the consequence. By visually and verbally supporting our troops here at home and showing we care, we can, and we do help increase their morale.

Those of us who support our troops, are the silent majority. We are not “organized” to reflect who we are, or to reflect what our opinions are. Our idea of showing our solidarity and support for our deployed service members will continue on each and every Friday until our troops are home.

We encourage you to support our initiative by wearing RED on Fridays!

Better yet.....come join us. We meet in front of the LPG clubhouse and depart for breakfast at 8 AM. We always have more than ample transportation if you wish to carpool. Need a ride? We will gladly pick you up and deliver you back to your home if required.

If you wish to meet us at the restaurant, drive over to IHOP on S. Power Road just south of Baseline Road. Require more information? Feel free to contact Dick Nations at (512) 809-8899, or Richard Bartlow at (480) 665-1038. The Red Friday Breakfast Group will be hosting a Memorial Day Breakfast at IHOP Restaurant. Contact Dick Nations for reservations and information.

MANAGERS MOMENTMANAGER’S

MOMENT

By Christie Canan, LPG Community

Manager

“May flowers always line your path and sunshine light your day,

May songbirds serenade your every step along the way.

May a rainbow run beside you in a sky that’s always blue,

And may happiness fill your heart each day and your whole life through.”

Recently, I was walking down the street and looked up to see a beautiful rainbow stretching across the sky. With my mind constantly on work, family, and other obligations, I quickly realized that I often forget to “stop and smell the roses.” The colors of this rainbow enticed me to take a look around and actually see my surroundings as opposed to just drifting through my day. As I noticed the different hues in the rainbow, I realized that those same

colors are prominent right here in our community too! Have you seen the rainbow of colors??? All you have to do is look outside…there’s a multitude of seasonal flowers growing right in your neighbors’ yards and several of you have taken advantage of this great weather and added your own rainbow to your patios as well. The pinks, purples, reds, and yellows sure do brighten our streets and it looks great! We also have a rainbow of yellow and orange citrus bursting out amongst the green leaves. Our rainbows don’t stop at the homesites, though. As I gaze out towards the pool area, I can’t help but notice the beautiful shades of green in the grass, trees, and shrubbery that brush up against the blue pool and sky, making it our own little LPG rainbow. What an amazing backdrop for a day in the bright Arizona sunshine! I look forward to seeing the inviting colors of the LPG rainbow each time I step out and encourage you to see your own rainbow every day. I hope you have a great month and thank you for making LPG your home.

2021 Las Palmas Grand Neighborhood Watch Program

(LPG NWP)Get more connected for community safety with the LPG

resident-initiated and led Neighborhood Watch Program! This is a program that will strengthen our awareness and communication for, and voice and approach to community safety.

We are working with the LPGRA and the Las Palmas Thesman community, with the support of Thesman management and the Mesa Police to launch this program. In later May/June a joint Street Leader/Greeter Training will be available in-person or via YouTube on the LPGRA website (date to be announced), and there will be a NWP page on the LPGRA website as well.

Community residents are needed, and Volunteer Street Leaders/Greeters are desired for each of 44 streets (as listed in LPG Directory), or in street sections of 10-15 homes to know, connect and inform neighbors and caretakers via email/phone trees. Volunteers are also needed for the LPG Neighborhood Watch Program Committee, which is comprised of interested residents, Caretakers and Street Leaders/Greeters to meet monthly, and report to the LPG Residents’ Association Board. Please email [email protected] or call Sally York-Unit 521 at (253)228-1790 if you are interested in the LPG Neighborhood Watch Program and would like more information.

WHY HEALTHY ADULTS ARE AT RISK FOR

SHINGLES(BPT) - At age 67, rock music

enthusiast, avid runner and California native Jon was brought to his knees by shingles, a disease that approximately one in three people in the United States will develop in their lifetime.

Jon maintains a healthy and active lifestyle. He is the first American to reach 50 consecutive years of running at least one mile every day. Despite this healthy lifestyle, he contracted shingles and was shocked by how much damage it caused a physically fit man like himself.

“I felt a stinging sensation after a long bike ride. It was a hot September day and I figured I had been exposed to poison oak. I continued on without thinking it

could be something more.”Anyone who has gotten

chickenpox is at risk of contracting shingles, also known as herpes zoster. When chickenpox becomes dormant within the nerves, it can reactivate later in life, causing shingles. Shingles typically presents as a painful, itchy rash that develops on one side of the body and can last for two to four weeks.

“My experience with shingles was excruciating. I experienced a range of symptoms, from trouble sleeping because of the blisters to crippling pain throughout my body.”

When the pain did not subside, Jon visited his doctor, who confirmed that he had shingles. Jon’s active lifestyle immediately changed. He refrained from going out in public and could only take

cold showers because hot water would reactivate the irritating blisters.

“Shingles took over my life. I felt helpless in my own body. This was truly a paralyzing feeling for me.”

Approximately 10-18 percent of patients with shingles experience post-herpetic neuralgia, a pain lasting from at least three months up to several years.

The truth is, anyone 50 years or older, even if you’re a healthy, active person, is considered at risk for shingles.

If you’re 50 years of age and older, talk to your doctor about vaccination against shingles. Vaccination will help reduce the risk of developing shingles and the potential long-term pain from post-herpetic neuralgia, a common complication caused by

the disease. For more information, visit www.

By Margaret JacobyBy the time you read this, the

second edition of the new LPGRA Quarterly Newsletter will be in the works. We are very excited about this new way to communicate with residents here at LPG. We had a good response to the articles in our first issue – many thanks to Shirley Ann Crane, our Editor, for putting it together! All residents are encouraged to send an article, or recipe or photo to Shirley Anne at [email protected]. Deadline for articles is May 1st and distribution will be May 15th. The newsletter is sent to our email list and posted on our website. If you are not part of the email list, please send us your request to be included – we do not take addresses from the LPG Directory. Send your email to – [email protected].

The LPG Neighborhood Watch Program (LPGNWP) is moving right along. Thanks to our coordinator Sally York, for volunteering to head up LPGNWP – we need a few more volunteers to make this program a success. Sally is currently coordinating with the programs at Las Palmas and Palmas Del Sol. Real community spirit! Please let Sally know of your interest by email at [email protected]. (Look for

the Neighborhood Watch article elsewhere in this issue of Lifestyles).

The March and April meeting minutes are posted on the website and can still be viewed on the YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJq8KZ2x_BQ) Our next open meeting will be held on MAY 6 at 9:30 a.m. in the Ballroom maintaining social distancing and wearing masks. The meeting will once again be live streamed on the YouTube channel for all those who are unable to attend. A list of all meetings is posted in the Mail Room and can be found on the website: www.lpgra.org.

We have been conducting a 50/50 raffle at each meeting and awarding a few door prizes. Be sure to attend to be eligible for these awards.

We want to thank those residents of LPG who made voluntary donations to the Association– it takes a bit of money to host and update the website, offer small door prizes, and communicate through Gmail and our email list. With their generosity, the Board is breathing a bit easier now. As you may not know, in years past a small assessment was previously collected from residents to support the Association. We have not taken that step but still need your support. If you are able

and agreeable, please let us know and send a check to LPGRA, 2550 S Ellsworth Road #666, Mesa, 85209 or any Board Member will be glad to pick up your check or cash donation.

Just a reminder that the LPGRA mission is to enhance positive community living by providing an organized, positive approach for resident/management interaction. We are still looking for volunteers to help the Board with some of our responsibilities. If you have a special skill or interest and want to volunteer on a committee or Neighborhood Watch, please let any officer know or send an email to [email protected]. The more participation, the lighter the load and the more success we will have.

We look forward to seeing you on May 6 at 9:30 a.m. – bring a friend and expand our influence. Thank you for your confidence in the LPG Residents Association.

LPG RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION

Hello, Las Palmas Grand residents! For the past 2 ½ years, I have been working diligently in the LPG Sales office with a great mentor, Mike Shelton. My 23 years of real estate experience was the base for me to expand my horizons in manufactured housing, so it didn’t take me long to realize that I was going to absolutely LOVE working at Las Palmas Grand! While the world turned upside down with the pandemic, the LPG Sales office stayed quite busy with listing and selling homes. In fact, Mike and I have sold 50 homes so far this year! Las Palmas Grand is my “happy place” and, while it will not be the same without Mike’s jokes and beaming smile, I am very much looking forward to the opportunity to fill his shoes and to serve this community for many years to come.

If interested in selling your home, I will provide a free market analysis and $100 when you list with me! Come see me anytime!

-Diana Gonzales

Hello All, There are several milestones we pass as we get older. At 16, I got my driver’s license, at 18 I could vote, at 21 I could legally drink and at 25 my auto insurance was supposed to decrease. The next big one was 62 when I could draw Social Security and then Medicare at 65.

Well, I turned 65 in April. One might say there are no more milestones to pass. Nothing could be further from the truth. There is a word in the English language the begins with an “R” and ends in “ment”. You can probably fill in the rest of letters. RETIREMENT. After many conversations with my wife, I feel it is time to hang up my golf cart keys. My last official day at Las Palmas Grand will be May 28th.

I have been in sales at LPG for 10 ½ years and it has been a tremendous ride. I have sold over 600 homes in Las Palmas Grand, however the more important number is number of people I have met and hopefully helped attain a portion of their housing and retirement goals. Along the way I have been fortunate to meet many people that I truly call friends. Debbie and I have not fully decided what will happen after I retire but one thing is certain, we will continue to call Las Palmas Grand home because we absolutely love it here.

I want to thank Michael Thesman for the opportunity to work in the finest 55+ community around. I also want to say thank you to Kerin MacWilliams, Todd Lutz and Ron Takasugi. They played integral roles in my success.

Lastly, thanks to all the residents of Las Palmas Grand who have impacted my life, both professionally and personally. People make the world go around and LPG has the best! Beginning in June I’ll see you at the pool! -Mike Shelton

HAPPY RETIREMENT MIKE!

The Arizona Office of Tourism is designating 2021 as Arizona’s Year of the Road Trip.

Planning a trip is actually good for you. Nearly every respondent (97%) to a survey from Destination Analysts said having a trip planned makes them happier overall. Plus, 71% of respondents reported feeling greater levels of energy knowing they had a trip planned in the next six months.

“Having a trip to plan and look forward to provides so many positive benefits,” said Debbie Johnson, Director of the Arizona

Office of Tourism. “That’s why we launched Year of the Road Trip, to provide options, with safety and responsibility in mind, to those who are ready to plan their next trip.”

Year of the Road Trip itineraries and the latest COVID-19 guidance on safe travel can be found at AZRoadTrips.com. Arizona is made for road trips with its beautiful scenery and wide-open

spaces, making it easy to socially-distance along the way. New Arizona road trip ideas will be updated seasonally throughout 2021, so travelers planning road trips are encouraged to check back regularly.

To kick off the Year of the Road Trip, AZRoadTrips.com features a special itinerary right now focusing on Arizona bucket list destinations. Country music artist Mitchell

Tenpenny’s video for the song “Bucket List,” which was filmed entirely in Arizona and highlights some of the state’s most spectacular locations, is the inspiration for this itinerary.

AOT will continue to share new road trip itineraries at AZRoadTrips.com throughout this year.

The International Dark Sky Discovery Center (IDSDC) launched an $18 million capital campaign to build a unique science-based facility in Fountain Hills, Ariz., that includes a first-class domed observatory. The IDSDC will house the largest telescope in Greater Phoenix, and with its three other state-of-the-art components, will provide STEM education for students and leading-edge learning experiences for all ages.

“By inspiring individuals and organizations to fund this exciting endeavor, we will fulfill IDSDC’s vision to inspire, educate, and stir imaginations to cultivate a greater understanding of our dark skies, our planet, and the universe,” said Joe Bill, IDSDC president.

Coinciding with the third

anniversary of Fountain Hills being designated as the 17th Dark Sky Community in the world by the International Dark Sky Association, IDSDC is privately raising capital to construct the 15,000-square-foot, non-profit facility that will be an international attraction benefiting the entire State of Arizona.

Today, for the first time, the public can experience the vision of the IDSDC by viewing an inspiring video designed to introduce the public to the project.

Those interested in more information or donating to make this world-class facility a reality,

please visit: DarkSkyCenter.org “The International Dark Sky

Discovery Center is an exciting opportunity for students and amateur star-gazers alike,” said Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey. “The center will be another tremendous asset to keep our state at the forefront of STEM education.”

Once constructed, IDSDC will feature four distinct educational attractions: a Dark Sky Observatory, Hyperspace

Planetarium, Inspiration Theater and an Immersion Zone with interactive exhibits.

“Our Dark Sky Observatory will have the largest telescope in the Greater Phoenix area,” said Ted Blank, IDSDC vice president and NASA solar system ambassador. “We will offer public viewing to present breathtaking views of the moon, planets, nebula, galaxies, and other stellar objects.”
