Encouragement for prayer time with GodIn our love and adoration of God, it is natural to want to give him something. Give him yourself. “Give honor and praise to the Lord, whose power and beauty fill his holy temple.” (Psalm 96:6) “I have considered my ways and have turned my steps to your statutes.” (Psalm 119:59)

A fun-filled Rally Day on Sept. 8 kicked off a new year of discipleship at St. Andrew’s, and last week children, youth, and adults gathered in the Sanctuary to learn how the Church tells time in “The Story of the Church Year,” shared by our Godly Play storytellers.

Today, children in pre-school through 5th Grade return to their Godly Play classrooms; our middle school youth begin their fall Bible study; and youth and adults will hear from parishioner Pat Schmitz, who will share about his experiences in Guatemala, where he served on a mission trip this past summer.

Godly PlayGodly Play explores the wonder of God’s movement in our lives through sacred stories from Scripture, and the sacraments and liturgy of the Church. This fall, our children will explore the lives of some of the People of God from key stories in the Old Testament.

Having heard the story of “The Great Family,” in which God established his covenant with Abraham and promised that his descendants would become as many as the stars in the sky and the grains of sand in the desert, the children will explore more deeply “The Story of Sarah,” Abraham’s wife and mother of Isaac.

Likewise, to enrich the “The Exodus” lesson, in which they learned of how God led his people out of slavery into freedom, they’ll examine more fully “The Story of Moses.”

Others they’ll encounter this fall include Joseph, Ruth, Samuel, King David, and Job. Throughout these lessons, they’ll learn that just as we are on a journey to discover the presence of God in our lives, so were the people of the Old Testament.

Our pre-K through 2nd grade students, led by Karen Brust, meet in Room 107, which is located in the hallway to the right of the Sanctuary, and our 3rd through 5th graders, led by Lori Cornett, meet in Room 101 off the Gathering.

Jan Zacharias leads the Young Lambs toddlers and 2s class in the Nursery.

Youth Bible Study Our middle school students this year will be using the best-selling TalkSheets series from Youth Specialties, updated for new-millennium students and designed to get kids talking and thinking about the Bible, and how its principles affect their daily lives.

The series focuses on relevant, real-life topics such as media influences, substance abuse, peer pressure and self-image, as well as prayer, worship,

and trusting God and dealing with doubt.

Middle-schoolers will also be viewing videos from The Bible Project, which will help them experience the Bible as a unified story that leads to Jesus.

Teachers are Joanna Spanos and Pokey Gales, with Fr. Shane Tucker sitting in from time-to-time.

Sunday ForumNext week, Sept. 29, we’ll welcome Brother Tim Luken, Abbot General of the Company of Jesus, who will speak during the Sunday Forum about monastic orders in the Anglican Church.

The Company of Jesus is a modern ‘Third-Order’ monastic community, and as such does not require its members to take a vow of celibacy. Many of the sisters and brothers in the Company of Jesus are married and participate fully in the order as professed members. While other members are solitary and have chosen that path, they are also free to pursue marriage if they so desire. Faithfulness in one’s current state of life is the standard.

The concept comes from St. Francis, who initially formed his First Order for men, Second Order for women, and Third Order for those in the

They‘ll return to the parish by 9 p.m.

Please wear clothes and shoes that can get messy, and bring a towel!

Youth/Family fire pit gathering Sept. 29 St. Andrew’s youth will officially kick off their fall program of events and activities with their traditional campfire for youth and their families on Sunday, Sept. 29, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. We’ll gather around the fire pit on the church lawn for some crazy antics, sweet treats, and music! Prayers for the ChurchAnglican Church in North America: Archbishop Laurent Mbanda and the bishops, clergy, religious, and people of the Anglican Province of Rwanda (French: Province de L’Eglise Anglicane au Rwanda).

The Province of the Anglican Church of Rwanda traces its roots to two missionary doctors of the British Church Missionary Society who arrived via Uganda and began a mission movement in Rwanda from 1914 to 1916. Later, a captain from the British Army started an Anglican mission in Gahini, in 1925. In 1926, Harold Guillebaud baptized the first converts at Gahini. He also would translate Christian books into Kinyarwanda (a local language). In the following years, other Anglican missions were created.

Rwanda became independent from Belgium in 1962 and the Anglican Church of Rwanda created in 1965 as part of the Province of Rwanda, Burundi and Boga Zaire. The first diocese was initiated in 1966. The name of Anglican Church of Rwanda (Église Anglicane au Rwanda) was adopted on Oct. 18, 1979, still as a part of the Province of Rwanda, Burundi and Boga Zaire.

On June 7, 1992, the Province of the Episcopal Church of Rwanda in the Anglican Communion was formed, consisting of seven dioceses.

The 1994 genocide and war left the Church and the nation in ruins. Since peace has returned, the Church has embarked on a program of spiritual healing for thousands of traumatized people. Kigali Anglican Theological College was started in February 2006 as a response to the training needs of the Anglican Church of Rwanda in post Genocide Rwanda. The college states that it strives to provide quality Christian training to the next generation of Christian leaders for Rwanda and, in turn, to assist in the development of the whole country.

The Church has now grown to some 1 million members (out of a population of 12 million) in 11 dioceses. The Church has been one of the pivotal sources providing support and episcopal oversight to orthodox Anglican parishes in the U.S. and Canada and has also been a leader in planting new congregations here. (Sources: Provincial website and Wikipedia.)

Please pray especially for the continued healing of Rwanda in the aftermath of genocide and for ongoing evangelism.

Anglican Diocese of the Great Lakes: Fr. Christopher Peterson and the people of St. Barnabas Anglican Church, Covington, Kentucky.Parish Cycle of Prayer: Gary and Susan Sommerville; Matt, Joanna, Bennie and Meg Spanos; our Level II Godly Play Class; and our Children’s Chapel Leaders.

— • — Prayer intercessors available at Sunday morning services Prayer teams are available to pray with and for parishioners during communion at the 9 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. Sunday worship services. At 9 a.m. they are stationed to the left of the altar near the band equipment; at 11:15 a.m. they are stationed to the right of the altar, near the piano.

You may seek prayer for personal cares and concerns, concerns for others, or offer thanksgivings for God’s blessings. The prayer team will also offer the sacrament of Holy Unction—the anointing with oil, laying on of hands and prayers for healing—upon request. All prayers are confidential.

If you wish to pray with the prayer team, receive Holy Unction, or both, simply go to them after you have received communion. If a line develops, other intercessors will come to minister to you.
