HISTORY OVERVIEW

Junior European Championships The very first edition of the Eventing Junior European Championships should have taken place in Italy in 1966 (Monza), but the event was cancelled due to an outbreak leaving Eridge (Great Britain, 1967) to host the inaugural show the following year. In 1967 competitors were fighting for individual glory only. France had a good start thanks to Alain Dominique Souchon who took top honours riding Roi d’Asturie. France was also the very first nation to conquer a team gold medal. French riders (Jean-Claude Lemignier/Oke B, Elizabeth Pellegrin/Armistice, Philippe Giraud/Gallax, Gerald Hovelacque/La Chatte) conquered the title on home ground in Craon, in 1968, the very first time the team competition was introduced. 2016 will be the 51st edition of the Junior European Eventing Championships as the event wasn’t held in 1975 due to another outbreak. Young Rider European Championships Eventing young riders had their first European Championship back in 1981 in Achselschwang (Germany). Although Great Britain took team gold, France captured yet another gold medal with Olivier Depangne and Destrier being the best individual combination. The 2016 Young Riders’ edition is the 38th.

MILITARY EQUESTRIAN CENTRE-MONTELIBRETTI FACTS AND FIGURES

Brief Historical Facts

The Military Equestrian Center (Centro Militare di Equitazione) traces its roots back to 1823 in Venaria Reale (near Turin) where, starting in 1849, it began operating in synergy with the Pinerolo Cavalry School. It is in this environment that, within the Tor di Quinto (near Rome) detachment, Army Captain Federico Caprilli (1868 – 1907) developed the modern style of horse riding which became common practice at the beginning of the 20th century. The Military Equestrian Center has been active since 1949 under the name “National Military Horse Riding Center” (“Centro Militare Ippico Nazionale”). 1955: It was transformed into the Pre-Olympic Military Horse Riding Center, reporting directly to the Army Chief of Staff, the Center became the fulcrum of the rebirth of horse riding in the Second Post-War. In 1969 it was renamed the “Military Horse Riding School” (“Scuola Militare di Equitazione”).
