Daphne Ayerst and John Grainger are among over 90 volunteers at the East Grinstead Foodbank that recently opened at Trinity Methodist Church Café. Daphne is the Foodbank representative for St John’s Felbridge and has

organized a Food Collection Box in the church. John, who also attends St John’s, told Felbridge Focus: “This is a great initiative and I wanted to be part of it from early on”.

The Foodbank is one of over 250 centres in the UK set up under the direction of the Trussell Trust. Each Foodbank is run by Christians from local churches for anyone in need without regard to race, colour or creed. Since opening just before Christmas, over 50 local people who have faced an unexpected crisis - such as an accident, bereavement or redundancy - have been given a 3-day food parcel to help them out before they can get on-going assistance from the Department of Work and Pensions.

Read some of the moving stories at www.trusselltrust.org and you can’t fail to be inspired to volunteer, donate food or money. For local contacts, click on www.eastgrinstead.foodbank.org.uk or call 07983 209940.

FULL MARKS for the children at Felbridge Primary School for this term’s impressive fund-raising for various charities, including Chestnut Tree House, St John’s and Crawley Open

House. They are now busy getting ready to raise money for Comic Relief on 15th March so please support them as much as you can.

The PTA has also been working hard to raise money for school funds, says Headteacher Andrea Trigg, having recently helped to fund new playground and ICT facilities. The next big fund-raiser will be the Summer Fair on 11th May from 12 noon to 3pm in the school grounds. If you would like to help, contact Pauline Keetley at the school office on 01342 323413 or via the new-look website at: www.felbridgeprimary.com.

Rev Stephen Bowen, vicar of St. John’s, retired at the end of December after 33 years as minister of the church. Mr Bowen and his wife Mandy have played an important role in the village, being actively involved in several local charities and clubs, Felbridge Primary School and Imberhorne School since their arrival in 1979. Stephen and Mandy have now moved to East Grinstead.

If you have any queries, contact Associate Minister Michael Peach or check out www.stjohnsfelbridge.com.

BAPTIZED as CofE, over 16, live in Felbridge, or regularly attend St. John’s? If you are on the Electoral Roll, you have to reapply every five years and now is the time. If you would like to apply for the first time, “please do so before March 9th to be able to vote at this year’s APCM on Sunday, March 24th” says Electoral Roll Officer David

Legg. Download a form at: www.stjohnsfelbridge.com/documents/Electoral role application.pdf or call David on 01342 713152.

St Catherine’s Hospice, one of the most popular local charities, will be holding the 10th Annual Sussex Weald Bike Ride on Sunday 19th May. Routes range from a fun 10 mile circuit that all the family can enjoy, through to a hilly 44 mile challenge for the more experienced cyclist. All routes are on-road and fully marshalled with clear, frequent route signs. Registration opened in February and costs £15 for adults but children under 18 can ride for free. If you would like to be on the mailing list for the Sussex Weald Bike Ride, contact Jen Wickham at [email protected] or call her on 01293 447364. Felbridge Country Show Group is already hard at work planning this year’s event which opens at 11am on 22nd June. One of the organisers, Rosie Archer, told Felbridge Focus: “Last year’s event was a great success and raised an amazing £4,000 for local groups. Our Art, Craft and Food Market in October was even more successful!”

“Many of last year’s stallholders have already booked to come to the Country Show again so 2013 looks like being even bigger and better” she adds. St. John’s is one of the many local groups involved and this year will be having a Cake Stall, Chocolate Tombola, Tin Can Alley and Penalty Shoot-Out.

Rosie says: “Setting up and clearing the Country Show on the day is a huge job and we are now looking for volunteers to help. Even if people can only manage an hour or two it would be much appreciated.” You can email Rosie at [email protected] or call 311184. Look for details at www.show.felbridge.org.uk.

???????

Debts &

JesusDeficits and debts seem to have filled the news for months on end. In the UK there is a debate about how fast the deficit should be cut, in Europe there are concerns about

s o v e r e i g n debt (whether a country can repay what it owes), and in the United States there was the fiscal cliff and then the issue of the debt ceiling. Countries are

struggling with debt, but so are individuals. Many people are unsure how they will continue to meet their commitments with costs going up and employment uncertain.

Financial debt is a real and pressing worry. However, each of us is in an even more serious form of debt. The Bible tells us that God is the Creator of the world and that all of us owe him our very existence. Despite this most of us ignore God and what he says most of the time. Frequently we pass our days hardly giving God a thought. Not only that, but we live our own way, often failing to live up even to our own standards, never mind God’s standard. We deserve to pay for how we have treated our Maker; we have a huge debt for the things we have done wrong – our sin.

I heard recently of an idea that someone had suggested in order to help with the financial situation in the United States: that the Treasury should mint a 1 trillion dollar coin, and then keep it as an asset and so on paper pay some of the country’s debt. It sounds like a faintly ridiculous idea, but thinking that we can pay God back for what we have done wrong is even more ridiculous. God is a good and just ruler of our world, and he cannot

simply let our rebellion go unanswered. We are massively in debt, and there is nothing we can do to get ourselves out of this debt – after all even our best works and commitment are only what God deserves.

Jesus lived a sinless life, doing good and speaking the truth – God’s truth. Yet he was hounded, betrayed and killed. An innocent man died the death of a criminal and rebel.

This death was not meaningless though, it was God’s way for our debt of sin to be justly paid – a debt we could never pay ourselves. As he died he took the sin and punishment of every single person who would ever trust in him. He paid our debts in full. As one of the Bible writers puts it, “the punishment that brought us peace was upon him” (Isaiah 53:5).

No doubt the deficit and debt crises will continue around the world for months and years to come, but our sin-debt crisis can be dealt with in full today – simply through choosing to trust in Jesus, the one who paid the price for us.

clematis regularly to keep them displaying to their best advantage. Start to hoe tiny weeds as they appear. It is much easier to deal with them now than after they have taken over your borders. Put supports in place now for herbaceous plants so that they grow through them, hiding the supports and avoiding damage to tender shoots. Feed your roses and soft fruit to give them a good start and begin to succession sow carrots, salads, peas and broad beans. If you feel inspired to start to “grow your own”, there are still one or two plots available at the new Felbridge allotment site.

MAYStart to harden off tender seedlings and summer bedding plants, but don’t put them out until later in the month. Summer baskets and containers can be planted up now, but protect them from a late frost overnight. Water newly planted shrubs regularly until they are fully established. Deadhead spring

and shrubs do not need to be watered. Cut the grass higher in dry spells and it will recover well. Focus your watering where it is most needed, such as containers, tomatoes and leafy vegetables. Use physical barriers against pests, such as insect netting on

fruits. A little vigilance now is so much better than spraying chemicals. If you grow sweet

Did you know that the world produces enough food for everyone, but not everyone has enough food? Every day 1 in 8 people go hungry. That is the equivalent of the populations of the UK, and all the other European countries, the USA, Canada AND Australia, all going to bed hungry tonight.

In 2013 the UK is hosting the G8 Summit and so, many churches and organisations including Tearfund, are running a campaign to ask our government to put hunger on the agenda at the G8.

The ENOUGH FOOD FOR EVERYONE IF campaign will focus on some of the root causes of hunger, recognising that aid is only a vital first step in tackling global poverty, and that we should go beyond it to the deeper causes of poverty and hunger, like climate change and tax dodging. During the year there will be campaigning actions on:

Keeping Finance Promises. Asking our government to keep its promises to give 0.7% of GDP as aid, and with other rich countries, to provide the money they have already promised to help poor communities adapt to climate change.

Land. Stopping companies and governments grabbing land from poor communities who can’t prove they own it, and changing the EU biofuel target that makes land grabs more profitable and pushes up food prices.

Tax. Stopping tax dodging by multinational companies, so they pay more tax in poor countries where they operate and poor countries’ governments can spend it on tackling poverty.

Transparency. Making the governments of poor countries more accountable to their people for how they use their budgets, and multinational food companies to be more accountable for their food stocks and food prices.

FELBRIDGEWILDLIFE WATCH

Getting Felbridge Wildlife in Focus is easy if you know where to look, what you are looking at, and have a competent pair of 8x30 binoculars to point at it. What you look like is up to you, but Nature’s quieter colours of browns and greens will help a closer approach than a loud yellow anorak. The Editor suggests I might review some of the places, within or near the parish, where interesting flora and fauna may be spotted. I think he meant more than the spotted orchid or the great spotted woodpecker. Indeed, Felbridge is blessed with wonderful countryside which includes farmland, woodland, lakes, wide sky and glorious mud. We should not forget the breeding, nesting sites and opportunities provided by our own gardens offering a whole host of habitats for insects, plants, trees, mammals and unusual seasonal visitors. In my youth, I was inspired by Gilbert White’s Natural History of Selborne, and informed by T.A. Coward’s Life of Wayside and Woodland, and The Observer’s Book of British Birds. I still have them. For practical self-guidance the yellow booklet Felbridge Parish and People, compiled by The Parish Council, is available from Stephonie or Jeremy Clarke, Oaklands, Lake View Road, RH19 2QE at £2.50. Hedgecourt Lake, at the end of Mill Lane, is the largest area of open water in South East Surrey and incorporates a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a nature reserve. Between March and May, the wintering gulls - black headed, herring and occasionally common gulls will disperse and a pair or two of elegant common terns (sea swallows) will dive for fish. Several pairs of spectacularly ruffed-up great crested grebes will rear their striped youngsters, which may hitch a lift on the adults’ backs, amid mallards, mute swans, a few herons and forty or so Canada geese. We shall return to Hedgecourt in the future to see what lurks in the reed beds and what grows along the watercourses. Meanwhile, it’s March on to May. Stay tuned.

Peter Bateman

St John’s Church will be taking part in this campaign during 2013. In addition to posters and local publicity, there was a Church Family Lunch on 3rd March where we showed Tearfund’s film Recipe for Change. This features the work of a church in Zimbabwe which is helping hungry people in their community grow the food they need despite a changing climate. If you want to view the film or help with the campaign, go to: www.tearfund.org/en/get_involved/campaign/if/ or contact Brenda Wilkinson for more information on 01342 311516 or at [email protected].

This year IF we join our voices with others we can press world leaders to make decisions and take action to combat the scandal of hunger.

! Wake up Brun

o! Wake up Bruno!

Right then, Bruno, time to get

washed and get to work – there’s

lots of people to tell.

Bo said that Jesus

died for us so that any-thing we do wrong can be

forgiven if we say sorry to God. So, Diane, I’m going down to the

shops and when I see people buying chocolate eggs or buttons, I’m going to bark and tell them when they eat them, they should remember that

the round shape is to remind them of the real Easter Story

and that big stone out-side Jesus’ tomb.I

don’t think the President could do that,

Bruno.

Bo said it’s about

a man who is more important than even Presi-

dent Obama. He was arrested and killed about 2,000 years ago. Then three days later, when his

friends looked for the body it had gone – a big round stone in front

of his tomb had been rolled away. This man, Jesus, came

back from the dead – can you believe it,

Diane?

Really Bruno?

Well, you know

how I love chocolate Diane, especially buttons? And I thought Easter was

all about chocolate eggs and chocolate buttons, but no. Bo said that I had to tell people

that Easter isn’t about chocolate at all – it’s

something completely different.

What was that

Bruno? That’s amazing to be given such an

important thing to do.

No, The White

Kennel, and it’s very smart…and the food was

amazing. You could ring for chocolate buttons any time you wanted. Still, I had to get back ready for Easter

because Bo gave me a special job to do for

him.

Does he live in the White House?

Yes Diane, and

he was very busy helping sort out the

Fiscal Cliff problem in January so I didn’t get long to see him. But what a place to live! There’s a sign on his

enough chocolate, I could rule the world!” He’s

my hero.

Is Bo the

Obama’s dog Bruno?

Bo is a Special Advisor to

President Obama, but some of the time

he chases rabbits around the White

House garden.Who is Bo?Bo

Bruno, that

sounds so exciting. Who

did you see?

Well, Diane, it was

more important than a holiday. I’ve

been to America to see a very special friend - someone who has a really important job

to do

Have you been

on holiday, Bruno?

[Yawns] I’m soooo

jet-lagged, I don’t know if

it’s day or night…

C’mon Bruno,

time to get up

[Sleepily] Errr, what time is it?

GULLEGE

Situated on the ridge south of Felbridge and approached by a sunken tree-lined track leading from alongside the tennis courts in Crawley Down Road. It is also alongside the pre-historic East/West Ridgeway that is now a bridle-way from Imberhorne Lane passing Imberhorne Farm and onto Hophurst Farm. Gullege is one of the most impressive buildings around Felbridge, the striking feature being the Elizabethan chimney stacks which rise high above the house.

In the fields around Gullege there is evidence of human activity dating right back to the Stone Age with finds including flint tools. During the Roman occupation, the fields below Gullege were used for smelting iron and the London to Brighton Roman Road crosses the pre-historic Ridgeway only a short distance to the West.

The first mention of the property is in 1361 when John Alfrey of ‘Gulledge’ was a Member of Parliament for East Grinstead Borough. The Alfrey family owned and occupied the property for 300 years, erecting the current house in about 1574 to replace an earlier one. Gullege is a timber framed building and would have looked similar to the jettied timber buildings in East Grinstead High Street. The impressive stone façade was added about 1610, completely changing the appearance of the frontage.

By 1895 Sir Edward Blount of Imberhorne Manor had purchased Gullege to expand his estate which already included Imberhorne, Tilkhurst and Hill Place Farms as well as the land that the Imberhorne and Garden Wood

housing estates are now built upon giving him a total of 1,030 acres.

In the 1950’s the property was unoccupied and had deteriorated to the extent that it was destined for demolition. In 1959, Mr and Mrs Thomas purchased and restored the house, which is now a Grade 2* listed building.

You can see from this old picture that the track from Imberhorne Farm to Hophurst Farm used to go right past the frontage. The track was diverted to the rear of the property in 1960. The frontage can still be seen by following the footpath towards the Worth Way.

Why not walk up there this Spring to take in the ancient landscape and views?

Three of four people gather around a large jigsaw puzzle; others exchange books on the book table, or discuss the news as they flick through the day’s papers. Part way through we have tea, coffee, and (extremely good) cake. While everyone is drinking and munching there is a short talk (usually about 5 minutes) which starts with a topical issue and connects it to a big theme of the Bible. Everyone welcome.

CONNECTIONS

Babies, toddlers and children are always welcome at St John’s. There’s a creche for the under-3’s and a Family Corner in church with toys and books. We also have special Out of this World groups (Stars for 3 to 6 year olds; Comets for school years 2 to 4; and Meteors for school years 5 and 6) in the Church Hall. For the 11 to 14 year olds, we have a group called The Rock.
