On December 11, 2013 local resident Robert “Bob” Anderson received the experience of a life-time for a person of the Catholic faith, a brief audience with Pope Francis at the Vatican in Rome.

“I was with a group of about 15 people that Father Bayhi took to Rome last month,” Robert “Bob” Anderson told the EXPLORER. “We knew that we would get to see the Pope during his weekly au-dience with people in St. Peter’s Square, but never in my wildest dreams did I expect for the Pope to put his hands on my head and bless me.”

Weather permitting, the store will take about 9 months to complete, and should be ready for next football season!

“Our custom-designed facility will be a high energy and customer interactive store. We are looking for-ward to an early fall 2014 opening,” Feliciana Supermarket Manager Lisa Leblanc said. “We will have ev-erything from fresh sushi and hand cut steaks, to a floral department and upscale wine selections.” Leblanc added.

ride in and he was pushing me the day we got to see the Pope.”

“Father Bayhi knew a man who was a retired security officer at the Vatican,” Anderson explained. “This man was able to guide us to an area close to the Square where we could drive to so it would not be so far to push someone in a wheel chair.”

“Rick Smith was absolutely wonderful to me. Once we got into the square, we were initially told that we would be in a group of 5,000 who would have an audi-ence with the Pope in a big room at the Sistine Chapel. After wait-ing for a while, the plans changed and the Pope decided to hold the audience outside. All the people in wheel chairs and even those on beds were brought up to the front of the group. There were probably 30,000 people standing behind us in the Square.”

“As I sat there waiting for the Pope to come out, all I was think-ing was that I would get the oppor-tunity to see the Pope up close,” Anderson related. “At that point, I had no reason to imagine what was about to happen to me.”

“After the Pope came out, he began to move through the crowd of handicapped people in wheel-chairs and beds stopping to talk to some of them and blessing them. There were lots of us handicapped people that day so it took a while for the Pope to get over in our area. Finally we could see that he was coming down the row that we were in.”

“When the Pope reached me, he stopped,” Anderson recalled

vividly. “He took my hand in his, said a few words in Italian, and then placed his hand on my head and blessed me. As the Pope turned to walk on, he said to me in English, “Pray for me.” The Pope is a very warm, charismatic person.”

“It was an overwhelmingly, a once in a life-time experience for me,” Ander-son, a native of New Orleans, ac-knowledged. “It was particularly meaningful to me because last May, I lost my wife of 50 years to a sud-den illness. She was in reasonably good health, but one morning she just did not wake up.”

A n d e r s o n graduated from De Lassalle high school in New Or-leans in the late 1950’s. After at-tending UNO for a time, Anderson began a 40-year career in the bank-

ing industry. His first job was with the old Hibernia

Bank. However, he spent most of

his career in Alexandria as an Ex-ecutive Officer with the old Secu-rity National Bank.

“After Regions Bank bought out Security National Bank in the early 2000’s, my wife and I de-cided to move from Alexandria to the Zachary area to be closer to our grandkids,” Anderson pointed out. “We had a lot of good friends in Alexandria, but no family. We had been active in our church in Alex-andria for years and had a large church family.”

Both of Anderson’s children graduated from Menard High School in Alexandria. Son Jeffery, works for a British law firm that specializes in municipal bond is-sues throughout England and Eu-rope. An LSU and University of Michigan graduate, Jeffrey works in public relations in the bond di-vision of the British Law firm. Jef-frey is also a Rotary Club scholar, earning a year at the University of Durham in England.

Daughter Lisa works at the Lady of the Lake in the Human Resource Department. She has two children, and lives in Zachary.

Anderson is very active in vari-ous venues with Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church in Zach-ary. He expected the trip to Rome to be very enjoyable, but had no thought of be blessed person-ally by the head of the Catholic Church. It was a combination of not only being in the right place at the right time, but also being in the right condition.

Wildcat Softball Standout Signs Letter of Intent

It would be wonderful if all the churches in East Feliciana Parish would participate in Souper Bowl Sunday for Helping in His Name Food Bank of Jackson or another food bank of your choice.

Souper Bowl of Caring is youth across the nation working in their church to fight hunger and poverty for their community.

It all takes place the day of the big football game – the Super Bowl. On February 2, 2014 the youth stand at the church door and take up a collection (use a soup pot) asking for a donation. They also can have a huge box to take up a collection of food. It doesn’t have to be a can of soup but we love to get cans of soup but a jar of peanut butter, jelly or can meats is fine, also.

They give 100% of their donation directly to the food bank.In 2012, more than 10,000 groups collected more than $9.8 million in

dollars and food for local hunger-relief charities. That’s a total of more than $90 million collected since the movement began in 1990! Help us grow this movement and tackle hunger in America!

We thank each and every church in East Feliciana that plans to partici-pate.

Four Silliman students were chosen to participate in the Day with the Doctors program on January 8, 2014. These students, from Mrs. Sharon Kline’s Biology II class, were Devin Coarsey, Sunne Pace, Lexi Rodriguez, and Sarah Bordelon. The Day with the Doctorsprogram is open to eleventh and twelfth grade students with at least a 3.0 GPA. The program gives students the opportunity to spend a day at the LSU Health New Orleans Medicine campus. During their day on campus, students learn about medi-cal problems, work with specimens and microscopic slides, practice basic life support techniques, explore the anatomy and/or pathology labs, interact with medical students and faculty, and receive medical school admissions information and more. The girls’ favorite experience was shocking the “human simulator” back to life after it died from complications. They were thrilled with their experience and came back with many interesting stories.
