Developed in Wes Jones Studio, this project for the Helsinki competition was developed in a formal experi-mentation trying to achieve the near figure.

Near figure is a strategy used to keep the engagement of people into the understanding and reading of the shape of the building. This engagement is achieved by the creation of a shape that could evoke readings from the users. The understanding that simple shapes are more dubious made the project an investigation of the right moves that would create this near figural shape.

The project is developed for a blighted are of the port Area of Rio de Janeiro. The project is a public manifesto against the private investments happening in the area. The market is a the public counterpoint for the malls that are invading the city, and because of that was designed to be open 24-7 bringing together different populations.

A big terrace is projected over the bay, The existing promenade of the bay’s edge is maintained but pointed by the presence of this massive infrastructure. In addi-tion to these two broad absolutely democratic spaces, the tgarante project also two smaller private use balco-nies of restaurants and nightclub.

One of the main premises of the project was to embrace functions and uses to keep the park / market open and operating 24 hours a day. That’s important by under-

standing the need of the region lacking basic needs products, but still calling for a characteristic of the site which is nightlife and parties.

This was a competition for a multipurpose building in the same plot of a preserved building. The proposal creates an internal patio that relates to the preserved building, Also a promenade is created by elevating it from the ground floor. The promenade extends from the main access to the back access, which is the original access of the historical building. All the public programs were placed in the ground floor increasing its public character. The choice of the big amount of glass and the perforated metal sheet are also related to this intension of exposing its use to the people on the street.

The snowy coastal site where the new Comandante Ferraz Antarctic Station will be built, is presented as unprecedented challenge for architects accustomed to urban spaces, historical, built landmarks visible limits, traffic and crowds offsets.

The implementation of the main building took into ac-count limits imposed by zoning, topography, the path followed by the sun, prevailing winds, the northern and southern lakes, the sea and the space occupied by the old helipad and the old station.

Taken together these elements make sense, enabling a reading of the site as a place that has a story and sug-gests hypotheses. There are boundaries, invisible or not, but they exist. This condition will join the first in the composition of architecture presented.

Development of linear plant with a deviation from the main building axis by about 20 degrees to the northeast The confrontation of this hypothesis with natural lighting requirements demonstrated the correctness of the cho-sen position; It allows sunlight to come east and west facades in equal amounts.

The development of the building in the confrontation with the rising topography southward resulted in stag-gering levels in great harmony with the zoning of the studied plant.2013_CompetitionAssociated with Priscila Coli, Zeca Franco, Lina Correia, Sara Marga-rida, João Filgueiras e Tiago TardinAntartic

ENHANCE THE DIFFERENT SCALES

We take as initial premise to work on more than one scale, respecting and valuing “building-being” and the inclusion of the human-being.

“POLYCORED”

Without detracting from the historical context that values the extreme compartmentalized spaces, in which FAU was built, we understand that today the long distances do not meet the full form its members. So we think of spreading modules, commerce and service holders in the flows and concentrations giving support to these two movements.

MODULAR STRUCTURES FOR A MODERN BUILD-ING

This project is faced with the difficult task of renewing an modernist icon, a building that is important for its history and for being the host for the most prominent school of architecture of Rio de Janeiro. It is not a preserved building, but its original design needed to be preserved.

This project propose a modular structure capable to adapt to different programs. The idea is to unify the aesthetics of the interventions necessary to the function of the original building in a furniture-like structure that could be moved, reorganize and dismounted over time without leaving marks on the modern icon.
