My mom was my first real

friend—and what a friend she was. My first trips to Brack-enridge Park, the Majestic Theater and San Pedro Pool

were with my mom. I had not yet reached the age of five. My mom guided me during my childhood and gave me great counsel throughout my adult life. She never missed an opportunity to praise her children.

My mom, Alicia Saenz Romo, a native of San Anto-nio, was born in 1921. She lived a life dedicated to her family, her work, her friends and her faith.

Her parents came to Texas in the late 1890s to work in the ranches of South Texas. Her dad trained horses and her mom cleaned and cooked for the ranch owners. About 1901, they gave up rural life and moved to San Antonio. There was nothing easy about growing up in this era, but the Great Depression years in San Antonio were especially hard.

Alicia Romo, her parents, and her nine siblings, all lived their entire lives in San Anto-nio’s Westside. The siblings lived in about a half dozen neighborhoods, which meant we saw some of her family fre-quently, but not all the time.

Mom wanted to make sure we saw as much of the Saenz family as we saw of the Romo family. She had her work cut out for her. There were thirty-eight Romo’s within two blocks of my home on Mon-

terey Street. My dad’s parents and four brothers and sisters lived very close—so close it was almost a compound.

Mom grew up with lots of love but very little money. She left school at age eleven to help boost the family income. She shelled pecans, and in the spring and summer months, went with her dad and other sisters to pick cotton. As a young teenager she entered the work force as a seamstress. In her spare time she helped her mom run a small mom and pop grocery store.

Mom had an incredible work ethic. She married at age twenty, four years after meeting my dad in the cotton fields of South Texas. When my dad went into the service, she helped her parents in their small grocery store while rais-ing two children. She helped my dad start a small grocery business when he returned from the Army Air Corp. She stayed active in the grocery business while raising five children. In the late 1960s my parents closed their store after twenty-five years in operation and began construction of a restaurant on Highway 281 South.

Mom had a sixth grade edu-cation, but she helped to de-sign the new restaurant build-ing insisting, for example, an

addition of arches similar to ones she had seen in Northern Mexico and mapping out the location of the kitchen and table area. She decorated the restaurant with her favorite Mexican papier-mache parrots and Mexican art work. On a trip to Tijuana, Mexico, she found a large iron chandelier for her main dining room. When my dad asked how she planned to get it back to San Antonio, she pointed at me. Yes, I put that chandelier on top of our 65 Mustang roof and drove it to San Antonio a few months later.

My mother strongly be-lieved in self-improvement and constantly strived to improve on her recipes, even though she was known as an outstanding cook even beyond the family. Everyone loved her delicious enchiladas, carne guisada, and rice, but espe-cially her homemade tortillas. During her early years at the restaurant, she made time to visit my family in Los Angeles and then San Diego where we lived for 14 years. We called these visits “working vacations” because my mom made sure we visited many of the best Mexican restaurants in the city.

We visited five or six restau-rants a day. She took great in-terest in each menu and would

order numerous dishes that struck her fancy. She had an amazing memory and could remember years later what the different restaurants offered and how their specialties were prepared.

Her rule for running a suc-cessful restaurant began with two simple rules: never spend more money than you make; and treat all the customers with respect. For 25 years we did not celebrate Mother’s Day because she cooked for her customers and Mother’s Day was a popular day for her restaurant.

Mom especially valued edu-cation, perhaps because she had to abandon her studies to help contribute to her family finances. She made sure all her children finished high school and encouraged them to at-tend college. She had never flown in an airplane, but set aside her fear to attend our son’s graduation ceremony from Stanford and jumped for joy when our daughter earned a Ph.D. from Harvard.

Mom passed away in 2010 at the age of 89. She was a role model for me, her children, her grandchildren, and her friends. She cared for us and taught us much about work and life. I think about her every day, but especially on Mother’s Day.

Recently, the Alamo Colleges Chancellor Dr. Bruce Leslie and Incoming Chancellor Dr. Mike Flores joined representa-tives from 17 area universities. Together with Alamo Colleges and Austin Community Col-lege (ACC), they comprise the Transfer Compact Partnership to announce the completion of 84 percent of the Transfer Ad-vising Guides (TAG) that will save Alamo Colleges’ students time and money. The TAGs will ensure that Alamo Col-leges’ students who transfer to participating universities take only the courses they need and can be sure their credits will transfer.

TAGs have been posted online for UTSA, UIW, OLLU and TAMUSA. More TAGs will be posted by the end of May for Texas State University and Texas Lutheran Univer-sity, with additional TAGs for OLLU. The office of Dr. George Railey, Alamo Colleges vice chancellor for academic success, will complete all of the remaining TAGs over the summer.

The TCP was formed to ad-dress the fact that 80 percent of community college students in Texas plan to transfer to a uni-versity; only 20 percent actually do. Two out of five Texas com-munity college students lose all of their credits when they transfer. A majority of Alamo Colleges’ students, about 75 percent, transfer to universi-ties to complete their degrees. Four universities have recently joined the TCP. They are UT

Health San Antonio (UTHSA), Wayland Baptist University, Schreiner University and Texas Tech University.

“We are excited by the tre-mendous success of this effort, which is the first time all of these institutions have col-laborated to create a guided pathways model that has been shown to be the best strategy for ensuring college completion and career readiness,” said Les-lie. “This effort complements the Alamo Colleges District’s AlamoCONFIDENCE. Our institutional and instructional transformational initiative is to recruit, enroll, and gradu-ate students from instructional programs that are aligned with high-demand occupations/career pathways. This creates confidence in our students that their education journey will lead to successful careers. It also creates employer and community confidence that our graduates are fully prepared to meet their employment needs for both educational/techni-cal and leadership skills,” he added.

The TCP’s approach reflects the latest research which sup-ports the use of guided path-ways to increase student com-pletion and success. Elements related to program structure, support services and instruc-tional approaches have been redesigned and realigned to help students clarify their career and degree goals, choose and enter pathways that will achieve those goals; remain on those pathways to completion; and master knowledge and skills that will enable them to succeed in the job market and success-fully pursue lifelong education.

Guided pathways benefit students in multiple ways. They give students a clearer idea of the requirements for a chosen degree and profession, save students money by reducing or eliminating courses taken that do not count toward their degree or will not transfer, and decrease the time necessary to earn the desired degree. By saving money, students also require less financial aid, re-ducing their student loan debt upon graduation. With a clear goal in mind, students are more likely to complete their degree and/or transfer to a university and then to be prepared for career success.

Guided pathways also ben-efit the community by reducing the cost of educating students and improving the pipeline of students with the skills sought by employers, especially in high demand, high wage fields. This in turn benefits economic development efforts to attract employers to our region. At the colleges of the Alamo Colleges, the guided pathway model has been implemented through AlamoINSTITUTES, which organizes all courses into six groups directly related to ca-reer goals. At Alamo Colleges, all degrees and certificates have been organized into ten Areas of Study and Program Maps have been created for all degrees and certificates that include both career as well as transfer information.

At the Alamo Colleges Dis-trict, high quality education and affordable costs provide exceptional value to students and alumni who are major contributors to the economy and culture of our community.

Goalie makes 94 saves in lon-gest game in AHL history

The Lehigh Valley Phantoms and Char-lotte Checkers played the longest game in AHL history last Wednesday night. Phantoms goalie Alex Lyon had 94 saves in a 2-1 quintuple-overtime win in Game 4 of the Calder Cup playoff series between the AHL affiliates of the Phila-delphia Flyers and Carolina Hurricanes.

Manning considering offer to join Panthers ownership group

Future Hall of Fame Peyton Manning is con-sidering an offer to become part of the poten-tial Panthers ownership group led by billion-aire Ben Navarro. Manning, who retired two years ago from the NFL has rejected overtures and opportunities like this before. Sources say we may see Manning resurface as a member of an ownership group, but only time will tell.

San Antonio FC (3-2-3) beat Fresno FC (2-2-5) 2-1 at Toyota Field on Saturday night. A goal from 19-year-old Alex Bruce and an own goal from the Foxes earned the Alamo City club three points at home in front of 7,342 fans.

“I thought we were very brave tonight,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “We were able to create several opportu-nities throughout the evening. There’s always things you can improve upon, but overall the application and work rate from the players to get the result is something we’re proud of and that they can be proud of.”

“I’ve been waiting for this moment since I was a little kid. I know I saw my dad and he was in tears the whole time, so it’s a pretty good feeling,” said SAFC forward Alex Bruce.

“Being the new kid it was a bit shaky. (There’s always the ques-

tion of) ‘should we go with him, should we not,’ but they trust in me and I thank the coaches for that, for putting their trust in me.”

SAFC forward Bruce opened the scoring in the 20th minute after defender Darnell King sent a low cross through the mouth of the goal, which Bruce finished off with a tap-in on the back post for the 1-0 lead. The goal marked Bruce’s first profes-sional goal in his second start for the Alamo City club, while the assist marked King’s third this season, which currently leads the team.

Fresno FC then found the equalizer in the 63rd minute when midfielder Jemal Johnson finished a backheel flick past goalkeeper Diego Restrepo to level the score. Just four minutes later, SAFC regained the lead after midfielder Sonny Guadar-rama took a shot from long range that bounced off the post and off the back of goalkeeper Kyle Reynish to force an own

For the second straight year, the Valero Alamo Bowl will kick off on December 28 at 8 p.m. CST on ESPN.

While this will be sixth time in the Bowl’s 26-year his-tory the event will be played on Decem-ber 28, it is only the third Friday game. The other two were California vs. Iowa in the inaugural game on Friday, December 31, 1993 and #11 Kansas State vs. #14 UCLA on Friday, January 2, 2015.

Last year’s 25th annual Valero Alamo Bowl on Thurs-day, December 28 featured #15 TCU’s come-from-behind 39-37 victory over #13 Stan-ford. It was the 10th time since 2005 the game’s outcome was undecided until the final minutes and the fourth straight Top 15 matchup.

Since the advent of the Col-lege Football Playoff (CFP), the Valero Alamo Bowl is the only non-CFP game to feature a Top 15 matchup.

cosas que nunca he en-tendido del pres idente Daniel Orte-ga. Una es por qué se

quiere parecer al tirano que luchó tanto por derrocar: Anas-tasio Somoza Debayle. La otra es por qué vive en una casa que no es suya.

Les cuento la increíble his-toria de la casa más adelan-te pero déjenme comenzar con las recientes protestas en Nicaragua. Lo que empezó como manifestaciones por los cambios en programa sociales rápidamente se convirtió en una revuelta contra el régimen de Ortega y Rosario Murillo, su esposa y vicepresidente. Ellos tienen un duro control sobre el país. Y lejos de ser un demócrata, Ortega lleva 23 años en el poder en total (de 1979 a 1990, y del 2006 al 2018).

La represión de su gobier-no contra los manifestantes jóvenes y estudiantes en su mayoría fue brutal. La cifra de muertos, según el Centro Nicaragüense de Derechos Humanos, ya superó los 40.

¿Quién ordenó esa matan-za? El gobernante ausente y su omnipresente vicepresidente no solamente intentaron des-calificar la protesta, escribió

desde Managua el periodista Carlos Fernando Chamorro en la revista Confidencial, sino que ordenaron arreciar la represión hasta provocar una verdadera masacre. Se trata, en palabras de Chamorro, en el peor baño de sangre de la historia de Nicaragua en los años de posguerra.

El antiguo revolucionario sandinista copia los mismos métodos represivos de la dictadura que derrocó. Y la impunidad. No hay ninguna esperanza de meter a la cárcel a los autores intelectuales de la matanza.

Entre los muertos estaba el periodista Ángel Gahona, quien reportaba en vivo (en Facebook Live) las protestas en la población de Bluefields, Nicaragua. Su esposa, quien seguía la transmisión, vio cómo murió: Fue un disparo profesional, me dijo Migue-liuth Sandoval. Fue un disparo en la sien, que no cualquier acierta. La revuelta contra Ortega y su clan surgió desde dentro de Nicaragua. No se trata de nin-guna conspiración internacio-nal para desestabilizar el país, como sugirió perversamente la dictadura cubana. Se trata de estudiantes y adolescentes que han perdido el miedo y

que están hartos de tener un gobierno autoritario, uno que censura y mata.

Estos jóvenes nicaragüens-es me recuerdan tanto a los Dreamers y a los alumnos so-brevivientes de la masacre en la escuela secundaria de Parkland en la Florida. El cambio en Nicaragua está en sus manos. Y deben saber que no están solos; que fuera de Nicaragua los oímos y los vemos. La cen-sura oficial fue ampliamente burlada a través de Twitter, Facebook e Instagram. Los tiranos ya no pueden ocultar lo que ocurre. Los videos de la represión vivirán para siempre en la internet.

Si algo quedó muy claro luego de las protestas es que el futuro de Nicaragua es sin los Ortega-Murillo. Nicaragua ha vivido muchas décadas de dictadura y 23 años de Ortega en el poder son más que sufi-ciente. Como vimos en las calles, ya hay una nueva gene-ración lista para liderar al país.

Y termino con la historia de la casa con un terreno de 4 mil metros cuadrados donde viven Ortega y su esposa. No es su casa. Se la arrebataron a la familia Morales Carazo, que estaba de viaje tras el triunfo de la revolución san-dinista en 1979, y fue confis-cada ilegalmente, según me contó hace tiempo su dueño. and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in spring of April or May.

Here in the United States it is designated as the second Sunday in May which turns out to be the 13th this year.

The modern holiday of Mother’s Day was first cel-ebrated in 1908, when a wom-an named Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother in Grafton, West Virginia. She then began a campaign to make “Mother’s Day” a recog-nized holiday in the United States.

It took until 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson

signed a proclamation naming the second Sunday of May as a day for “public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country.” This year we celebrate the 104th anniversary of Mother’s Day in the US.

When we think of the sac-rifices many of our mothers have made, we can’t help but be thankful to them and for them.

Look at many of our suc-cessful leaders in San Antonio who have been significantly influenced and guided by their mothers. When you think of former Mayor and HUD Secretary Julián Castro and Congressman Joaquin Castro, you immediately think of their success and the influence that their mother Rosie Castro has made a difference in their lives. Both are graduates of Harvard Law School and Stanford Uni-versity. Rosie herself is well educated with a Master’s De-gree and making a difference

in the community on her own.Then we have mother Ame-

lia “Millie” Duran, the founder of the La Prensa Foundation which has raised millions of dollars for scholarships. Millie is the widow of the former La Prensa Publisher Tino Duran who passed away last year. She is the mother to sons Da-vid, Steve, and Tino Jr., plus two daughters Margie and Nina Duran. Daughter Nina now serves as the publisher of La Prensa and is a mother as well.

According to history, Jarvis the founder of “Mother’s Day” became very disappointed with its commercialization by the 1920s. Her mission was to honor her mother with an official Mother’s Day, not commercialize it in her words. Obviously it became so popu-lar it was eventually adopted by numerous other countries and is now celebrated all over the world.

In this tradition, Hallmark cards began creating and pro-ducing Mother’s Day cards so each person could offer a gift, card, or remembrance toward their mothers, grandmothers, and/or maternal figure on that special Mother’s Day.

We have come a long way in over one hundred years of celebrating Mother’s Day. Just a suggestion would be to give your mother a “Happy Mother’s Day” card if you haven’t already and perhaps take her out to dinner to a nice restaurant.

Donald Trump acaba de tirar un boomerang con la decisión de abrogar el tratado de armas nucleares con Irán. El boomerang indefectiblemente regresará; pero no lo hará solo, sino que estará cargado de bombas atómicas.

Con esta decisión, Trump tácitamente accedió a que los iraníes se conviertan en poten-cia nuclear en el mediano o largo plazo. Las ataduras que tenían con la firma del tratado no les permitían maniobrar con libertad; pero ahora que están sueltas, es solo cuestión de tiempo para que el gobierno iraní ordene la reiniciación de un proyecto atómico que estaba a pocos años de conclusión.

Asimismo, la decisión de Trump dañó la relación con nuestros aliados en Europa. Fueron ellos quienes insistieron al expresidente Barack Obama que deberíamos utilizar el “ca-rrot” (la opción diplomática) antes que el “stick” (la opción de la fuerza) para disuadir a los iraníes en su objetivo de ser otra potencia nuclear.

El trabajo diligente que concre taron con la Adminis-

tración Obama para lograr el tratado de la firma con el gobierno de Irán simplemente se lo tiró a la borda. Hoy, Los líderes europeos deben estar muy desilusionados, incluso humillados, debido a que en el proceso de esta última decisión, Trump nunca los tomó en cuenta. Los trató como países del tercer mundo.

Contrario a los argumentos que propiciaron la abrogación del tratado, los resultados del mismo fueron positivos. Tanto la Agencia Internacional de Energía Atómica, como los servicios de inteligencia de nuestros aliados en Europa y el Consejo de Seguridad de la ONU, informaron que el

gobierno iraní deshizo 97% de su uranio. Además, dos tercios de sus centrífugos y el total de sus instalaciones de plutonio fueron desmantelados.

Aparte de Trump, los únicos que celebran su nueva política son el gobierno israelita de Ben-jamín Netanyahu, los grupos terroristas islamistas y aquellos países que todavía pretenden adquirir bombas atómicas.

Durante el proceso de elec-ciones presidenciales, Trump manifestó que era uno de los grandes negociadores del plane-ta. No sé en que está pensando, pero esta decisión es pueril y altamente desestabilizante para el medio oriente.

Irán ya no tiene atada las

manos, no tiene ningún tipo de obligación que le impida, en los próximos meses o años, buscar capacidades nucleares.

Si pensamos que el Medio Oriente era una región en con-flicto, hoy se ha convertido en hervidero de bombas atómicas. Los países árabes –enemigos de Irán— estarán considerando buscar opciones nucleares para balancear el terreno a su favor. Dinero tienen de sobra, lo único que les hace falta es un aliado –India, Pakistán o Corea del Norte— con conocimientos para lograr sus objetivo nuclea-res.

El foro informativo se llevará a cabo en la Secundaria Judson (Judson High School), ubicada en la siguiente dirección: 9142 FM 78, Converse, Texas 78109, de 5:00 pm a 7:00 pm, el día Martes 22 de Mayo de 2018. Las mejoras propuestas incluyen la ampliación del ancho de la vía añadiendo un canal en cada dirección a FM 1516 entre I-10 y FM 78, además de añadir canales de cruce a la izquierda, canales para bicicletas y aceras.

Como se esperaba y gracias a un clima propicio una numerosa asistencia se dio cita en sábado 5 del mes en curso en el Arneson River Theatre para disfrutar el

festival más antiguo en su clase, en todo el país: “BRAVO Mi Cultura” que anualmente presenta el Depar-tamento de Parks & Recreation de la ciudad de San Antonio como un evento más del programa de festivi-dades del 5 De Mayo.

En esta fecha se conmemora la Batalla del 5 de mayo de 1862 en la que el modesto ejército mexicano

derroto al ejército de Francia, el más poderoso del mundo en su tiempo, en la ciudad de Puebla de Los Ángeles.

Bajo la producción de Monalissa Montgomery y la guía artística de los maestros y maestras de baile de Parks & Recreation, este festival anual se desarrolló en forma especial al participar en las serie de festejos

que se celebran en diferentes partes de la ciudad y por diversas insti-tuciones oficiales y privadas en el Tricentenario de la fundación de la Ciudad de San Antonio.

Los grupos de baile folklórico de jóvenes y niñas interpretaron bail-ables típicos de diversos estados de la República Mexicana, como de Jalisco, Veracruz y Tamaulipas.

Popular fiesta deportiva y familiar en el Sureste de San Antonio

Durante el último domingo (29 de abril), dé los tradicio-nales festejos de Fiesta San Antonio 2018, la comunidad deportiva y social en el sector sureste de la ciudad de El Ála-mo, celebró en grande al lado de familiares y seguidores de los clubes de béisbol Hal-cones de Seguin y Marineros,

que tienen afiliación en el Potranco Sports Complex (Potranco Baseball Field), que es presidido por el hombre de negocios Eloy Rocha y el coordinador señor Simón Sánchez, quien además es el narrador de jugada-por-jugada y compilador oficial.

La fiesta deportiva y famil-iar se extendió hasta el do-mingo 6 de mayo con el espe-rado partido All-Star Game, que fue ganado por la zona

sur ante el duro contrincante zona norte. La mejor parte de este concurrido festejo sucedió durante el periodo de premiación a los mejores equipos y jugadores individu-ales que participaron en las competencias de campo.

Los directivos del repre-sentativo norte fueron Chilo Hernández y Lucas Trejo del plantel Halcones de Seguin (campeón de temporada y playoffs), Julián Taveras del

club El Caribe SA, Saúl Nave-jar del equipo Potros y Juan Pedro Reza del popular con-junto Rieleros.

Por los sureños, estuvieron al frente Antonio (El Morris) Ramírez y Johnny López, ambos jugadores y directivos del equipo Marineros (sub-campeón del playoff), quienes representaron a su manager Rodrigo (Lolo) Rodríguez, Jesús Ramírez Sr., y José Men-doza de la franquicia Mine-

ros. Johnny López, presentó placa de reconocimiento indi-vidual a su hijo el prospecto Elvis López, quien recibió felicitaciones de su coach y compañero Antonio Ramírez, quien lanzó diez episodios en la victoria contra el represen-tativo norte, siendo elegido como el “Jugador Más Valioso del All-Star Game”.

Familiares, seguidores y los integrantes de los equi-pos en mención, así como

beisbolistas que fueron elegi-dos por sus méritos al All-Star Game, se unieron en la magna celebración en la que quedó sellado el compro-miso de repetir esa excelente convivencia en la siguiente Fiesta San Antonio. “Con estos festejos se pone punto final a la temporada que dejó excelentes recuerdos en nuestra comunidad deportiva y social”, dijo el coordinador Simón Sánchez.

Jake Jimenez likes his coffee black, although occasionally he’ll add a bit of French Vanilla creamer for nostalgia sake.

“I grew up drinking Maxwell House and Folger’s with my grandparents, and they would always add French Vanilla creamer,” Jimenez fondly re-calls, “so now I’ll pour a little in mine.”

Jimenez’s coffee preferences have evolved through the years, although that’s certainly not to knock Maxwell House or Folger’s. It’s just that the Kerrville native’s involvement with his family’s Colombian coffee company, Caferros, has elevated his taste, much like the green coffee beans they grow at a high elevation between 5,500 and 6,500 feet in the Antioquia mountains of Colombia.

There, some 325,000 cof-fee trees have been planted on the family finca and spread throughout land that is ideal, Jimenez explained, for grow-ing coffee in the region’s rich volcanic soil. The green coffee beans are picked by hand to ensure premium ripeness and

not by machine, so that coffee trees won’t be destroyed.

Jimenez is especially boastful of the Colombian Supremo of-fering. “It’s categorized as our largest, high-quality bean,” he explained. “A majority of time, Colombian coffee is grown at a high elevation. For every seven containers of coffee – and each container holds 40,000 pounds of green coffee – you only get about 20 percent of

harvest; so that out of seven containers, you only get one container of Colombian Su-premo.”

Back on the South American continent, the Jimenez family take great pains to ensure their 325,000 coffee trees are not devoured by the pesty broca bug that apparently enjoys a good cup of coffee, too, well, at least, green coffee beans.

“We plant fruit trees that attract birds, which eat the broca bugs and other harmful insects,” Jimenez said, adding that absolutely no pesticides are used to preserve the coffee crops.

Before he delved into the rich and bold, coffee culture, Jimenez was studying interna-tional business at Austin Com-munity College and Texas State University when he decided to switch his major to coffee, of course. Kidding aside, after two years of studies, he decided to join the family business.

“When I first started in the coffee business, I had little knowledge of coffee,” Jimenez said. “I started to go to Colom-bia to visit the family farm.”

Upon his return to Texas, Jimenez began learning about all things coffee. This included

sampling, literally, thousands of coffees from Asia, Ethiopia, Guatemala and Mexico, to name a few.

“Our coffee is special to me because we take time to pro-cess it carefully,” he said. “The milling and harvesting process

we use in Colombia really makes a difference.”

Meanwhile, you won’t find Jimenez back in Colombia picking coffee beans a la Juan Valdez anytime soon, like he did when he visited the family finca. Because there’s just one

thing that gives him the heebie jeebies: spiders.

“I was on the side of a moun-tain about 6,000 feet above sea level, and I’m surrounded by spiders,” he said. “I got at least half a basket before I had to get out of there.”

Santikos Entertainment an-nounced that construction has commenced on its new 87,000 square foot family entertain-ment center in Cibolo, Texas. Located at the corner of Wie-derstein and I-35 in the new Cibolo Crossing Shopping Center, the project is scheduled for completion in Spring 2019.

“We’ve spent the last sev-eral months perfecting a truly unique entertainment venue that will deliver a one of a kind guest experience that is unlike anything available today along the IH-35 corridor,” stated David Holmes, CEO of Santikos Entertainment. “The complex will feature 12 screens, 1,500 reclining seats, 16 bowling lanes, laser tag, a full-service high energy bar, full service restaurant, and several screens featuring our Santikos’ AVX format. AVX, our Ultimate Audio and Visual Experience offers our guests an unmatched premier viewing ex-perience with its large screen, laser projection and Dolby Atmos sound. We also will feature an outdoor live music venue that will showcase local and regional musical talent,” Holmes added.

All required utilities and roadway infrastructure are now complete, and Santikos is implementing plans to expe-dite the construction process. Stosh Boyle, Mayor of Cibolo, stated, “We’re working with Santikos Entertainment and the Cibolo Economic devel-

El colombiano Juanes y la chilena Mon Laferte hicieron una parada en el Freeman Coliseum el 6 de mayo en donde la gente pudo disfrutar del “Amarte Tour”. Una gira enfocada en el último disco del colombiano, “Mis Planes Son Amarte”.

El concierto empezó a las 7:30 p.m. con el invitado es-pecial Caloncho. El mexica-no cantó sus canciones más populares como “Palmar”, “Chupetazos”, “Optimista”, entre otras.

A finalizar Caloncho, Mon Laferte, a quien todos es-peraban con mucha ansia, subió al escenario y empezó su concierto cantando “Antes

de ti”; cuya canción también está disponible en japonés.

El público pudo disfrutar de un show inolvidable, ya que Laferte no necesita de una escenografía espectacu-lar porque cuenta con una voz increíble al igual que con unos músicos muy tal-entosos.

Los seguidores de la chile-na pudieron cantar con ella sus grandes éxitos como “Si tú me quisieras”, “Flore de amapola”, “No te fumes mi marihuana” entre otras. Cabe decir que todas la seguidores iban peinadas como ella, con una rosa roja en el cabello.

Antes de interpretar “El cristal”, explicó como esta canción se la escribió a su abuelita después que murió. Para Laferte, su abuelita fue alguien muy especial porque

siempre la apoyó en todo. “Esta canción la escribe

para mi abue l i t a qu ien fal leció hace unos años. Ella fue una gran maestra para mí, te amo”, expresó la chilena antes de cantar.

Casi al finalizar su presen-tación, la cantante le brindó una gran sorpresa al público, la cual muchos anhelaban, y finalmente cantó “Amárrame” con Juanes. Laferte agradeció a San Antonio por ser un público increíble.

A las 9:30 p.m. la espera de ver a Juanes terminó. El colombiano salió al esce-nario e inicio su concierto cantando uno de sus tantos éxitos, “A Dios le pido”. To-dos gritaban de emoción por verlo cantar y bailar.

Aunque esta gira fue ba-sada en su último álbum,

Juanes no dejo de cantar todas sus canciones que han marcado su carrera como “Mala gente”, “La camisa negra”, “Me enamora” entre otras.

Durante su presentación, el ganador de varios Latin Grammy expresó que ama a la ciudad de San Antonio.

Antes de cantar “Nada valgo sin tu amor”, Juanes dedicó esta canción a todos sus seguidores que han es-tado con él desde el inicio de su carrera.

“Esta canción va dedicada a toda la gente que está conmigo desde el día uno. Muchas gracias por tanto San Antonio”, agradeció.

El público se llevó otra gran sorpresa y es que pudi-eron disfrutar una vez más a Laferte y a Juanes cantar

juntos, “Fotografía”. Casi al finalizar el con-

cierto, Juanes interpretó “Querida”, de Juan Gabriel, algo que los espectadores dis f rutaron mucho. Am-bos (Juanes y Juan Gabriel) grabaron juntos esta canción hace unos años para uno de los últimos discos del divo de Juárez, “Los Dúo”.

Sin duda fue una noche

llena de mucha emoción y seguramente una noche inolvidable para todos los seguidores de estos tres grandes. “Amarte Tour” con-tinuará por Inglewood, CA (12 de mayo), San Diego, CA (16 de mayo), San Jose, CA (18 de mayo), Las Vegas, NV (19 de mayo), Temecula, CA (20 de mayo) y Chicago, IL (12 de julio).
