I used felt for making my birthday cup cake. Wool felt willlast longer but you can use synthetic felt too.

For my birthday this year, I created a feltcup cake...why?

...because I felt like it! Ha!ha!

Sorry, I just couldn’t help myself! :)

It was such fun to design, and even morefun to decorate! Prince Charming wasa bit upset as he wanted to play with it,but I turned it into a pin cushion. I thinkI will be making more of these as baby’sFIRST birthday gifts too!

Sizing: (height)

The cup cake stands 14½ cm / 5½ inches tall.

I used polyfil stuffing and turned it into a pincushion with myglass head pins. You can add a rattle and turn your cup cakeinto a baby toy for a first birthday gift - BUT leave off the pinsfor that!

Specific Requirements :

Brown, pale pink, blue, yellow and rose pink/red felt.Pins for a pin cushion OR a rattle for a baby toy.Ribbon.

General Requirements :

General sewing supplies (thread, pins, needles,scissors, etc).Toy stuffing.Fabric marker.

Glue the pattern pieces ontocard or thick paper and cut themout to make your templates.

Trace the templates onto thefelt and cut out the pieces.

Cut the FLAME from yellow, theCANDLE from blue, the ICINGfrom pale pink and the ROSEfrom pink/red felt.

Cut the SIDE and BASE PIECEfrom brown felt.

Sew the SIDE PIECES togetherat the side, leave a gap openfor stuffing the cup cake.

* You don’t have to use a sewingmachine - Felt is easy to sew byhand too!

Pin and sew the BASE PIECEto the SIDE PIECE.

Cut out the CARDBOARDPIECE and glue it in position inthe bottom of the cup cake.

Gather the edge of the ICINGPIECE using a long stitch justinside the edge of this piece.

Pull it just enough to fit theICING PIECE to the SIDEPIECE.

I like to use lots of pins so I canremove the gathering stitchbefore sewing the ICING inposition. Otherwise don’t forgetto remove it afterwards!

* Use a 5mm/¼inchseam unless statedotherwise.

This picture is of me sewing theICING to the SIDE PIECES, justso you can see how I sewed iton the machine.

* Remeber, you don’t have to use asewing machine - it’s just quicker thansewing by hand so that’s why I like it!

Stuff the Cup Cake firmly with toystuffing.

Sew the stuffing hole closed with aladder stitch.

Use the pattern markings toplace the flame in position. Sewit in place and sew onto theflame so that it looks like a wick.

Roll the CANDLE PIECEkeeping the felt nice and tight.


Use a matching thread and sewthe side of the CANDLE PIECEdown with a neat hand-stitch.

Wrap the ROSE PIECE aroundthe CANDLE PIECE as you seein the photo.

I like to secure the ROSEPIECE in place with a hand-stitch as I roll it.

Hand stitch the end of theROSE PIECE so it won’t comeundone.

Using fabric glue, glue theCANDLE in place on the crossat the centre of the ICINGPIECE.


Wrap a cute ribbon around thecup cake , nice and tight andhand stitch to keep it in place.

Add some pins if you want toturn your cup cake into aPIN CUSHION!

You can add a baby rattle whenyou stuff your next cup cake andturn it into a BABY TOY!
