Weekly Catechism Question

Question #63: Which is the third commandment? Answer: The fourth commandment is, "Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labor and do all thy work; but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God; in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it." Jude Doxology Cam Huxford Remember, Jesus brought you out of Egypt. Remember, He has sought you as His people. Remember, He has saved you from your sin. Remember, remember Him. Remember, Jesus brought you through the Red Sea. Remember, mighty miracles that you have seen. Remember, you were slaves and now are free. Remember, that He is king. To the only God, our savior, Jesus Christ. Be glory, honor, power, and dominion. Before all time, and now, and evermore! Remember, Jesus reigns above the heavens. He’s coming, He is coming with his kingdom. Do not forget, He is seated on the throne. Remember what He has done. To the only God, our savior, Jesus Christ. Be glory, honor, power, and dominion. Before all time, and now, and evermore. Amen

Trip to Ark Encounter and Creation Museum Tom Keller is putting together details for a trip to Kentucky for 4 days and 3 nights within the week of October 14 - 20. Travel would be via the church bus. Based on room prices for the moment, plan on $150 per night per room ($450 total, that can be split if you have a roommate), $60 for park tickets for age 60 and over. Wheelchair, if needed, is $10 for manual, and $25 for electric. You also need to have money for meals. There is a nice buffet at the Ark Encounter. They may also stop in Gatlinburg and Nashville for a dinner theater. You have until September 1 to sign up, which will come quickly, so if you are at all interested, sign the sheet in the hall! He hopes to get enough together to get better group rates.

More Feedback from D3 Thanks so much for allowing my camp and I to go on this trip. I really love travel-ing and getting to travel to a new state with my church was amazing. I loved the coffee shop, pool, games, dorms, food, and most of all the sermons. The entire trip made me feel happy and cared for and the food was always amazing. Thank you for the amazing week and my brother and I will be there next year. Sincerely, Erik Oliser Running from “the Black Dog” By Scott Slayton During the late fall and winter months, I fight with what Winston Churchill called “the black dog.” Depression nips at my heels from the first week in Novem-ber through the end of February. Unless I take appropriate steps, a general sense of darkness will follow me wherever I go. I don’t want to be around people, I have little joy, and I can spiral down at the drop of a hat. By God’s grace, I’ve learned how to stay one step ahead of the black dog. This is not some miraculous formula that drives away depression, but it has helped me to continue walking with the Lord, loving the people around me, and experiencing joy after previously letting it overwhelm me year after year. These are a few practices I have put in place to run from the black dog. For years, I lived in ignorance and denial about the darkness that enveloped me. Often I walked around in absolute misery, refusing to admit something was wrong and not understanding what was going on in my own heart and mind I’m not sure when the epiphany came, but by God’s grace, I started to see a pat-tern develop that helps me know when I’m about to start struggling. Instead of stay-ing silent and ignoring the problem, I acknowledge the temptation to my wife and some trusted friends. What I have discovered is that walking in the light about my struggles helps me to fight against them because I know I am not alone and I know how my en-emy works. If you struggle with depression, I want to encourage you to find a safe person you can talk to. Don’t assume they will brush you off and don’t as-sume that they won’t understand. Having people around you who know what you’re facing, who listen to you, and who are praying for you is indispensable in your battle against depression. (This post focuses on the spiritual aspects of wrestling with depression. Often, there can be medical issues in play as well. If you find yourself walking through

12

Cont. from p. 11 prolonged darkness, and especially if you start thinking about hurting yourself, seek out your doctor and a good Christian counselor. There is no shame whatsoever in admitting you are hurting and seeking help. The Gospel frees you to be honest about your struggles and also delivers you from false guilt.) Early in my Christian life, I could not understand why the Psalmists were so whiny. Now, the older I get, the more I identify with them. As D.A. Carson points out in The God Who is There, the Psalms tend to resonate more deeply with those who have had more experiences. Until then, he says that they may sound “a bit over the top, a bit extravagant, or even alien to you.” David wrote many of the Psalms while he was fleeing from his enemies, includ-ing one he wrote while his on son sought to kill him. (Psalm 3) Other Psalmists write from unnamed pits of despair. Because the God who stands outside of time inspired the writing of these Psalms, we don’t have to be walking through the Psalmist’s exact situation to receive the grace their writings dispense. The Psalms give us a vocabulary to pray when life is overwhelming. We often don’t know what to pray when times are good, so we especially struggle with what to do when life gets difficult. Paul reminds us in Romans that the Spirit intercedes for us when we don’t know what to pray, but we should also remember that we have prayers inspired by the Spirit that we can read and pray back to God. Praying through a lament Psalm helps us pour out our hearts to God for deliverance. As we pray through them, we store them up in our hearts and can wield them like a sword the next time the black dog wants to take a bite out of us. Only in the last few years have I begun to understand how integral sunshine and exercise are to my joy. A few years ago I had been struggling with depression and anxiety during a particularly wet and cold winter. I went outside one day when the sun decided to reappear and started feeling as if I was alive again after just a few minutes. I experienced the same feeling a couple of years ago when I started back working out after missing a few weeks. Fresh air and exercise are my friends in the fight against the darkness. Charles Spurgeon labored under a heavy burden after a terrible incident in which someone shouted “fire” while he preached. Several people died and he struggled with depression for the rest of his life afterward. (Zach Eswine draws lessons from Spurgeon’s depression in his book Spurgeon’s Sorrows.) In Lectures to My Students, he explains how those who labor for God’s glory can reap the benefits of the world he created. If you find the black dog snarling at you, run away from it. Get outside, go for a walk, take a hike in the woods, run in your neighborhood, or hit the weights. You’ll find that while it may not take away all of your problems, it will lift your spirits. God ministers to us through the world that he made. This has not been an exhaustive list by any stretch, but these three strategies will help you fight for joy when depression rears its ugly head. God works through his people, his world, and his word. We would do well to utilize them in our war against the black dog.

Missionary of the Week

Cham Chuen Gospelink - Cambodia

We just received a report from our missionary Cham Chuen in Cambodia. Here are excerpts and prayer requests:

Greetings to you and your church family from the land of Kpong Thom province! Thanks be to God for His compassion and kindness showing to my people and my country. I thank God for giving me such opportunities to serve Him. The more I walk with Him the more I experience His faithfulness on my ministry. I do not know how to thank you enough for all you are doing for us. In order to repay a part of your help, I keep on praying to the Lord for you and preaching the won-derful love of Jesus Christ to many as I can. After dinner, my family members rejoice together on reading Scripture, praying, and singing, songs. Our favorite verse found in Isaiah 49:15 (He will not forget me), Daniel 3:12-18 that always read together before rest. Regarding our production, my family is feeding 30 chickens and 1 cow. Besides that, we are planting some kinds of vegetable (peanut, corn, cucumber, green vegetables, chilies). It is good that our family has vegetables and fruits round year. Sometimes, we catch fishes from a lake nearby our house. Fishes are good to cook with ginger and lemongrass. Our local church activities have been much blessed since I was connected to you. Thanks to your prayers, Church activities have attracted more members to take part in. My home is still a warm place to welcome all people not only on Sundays but all day of a week. I spent much of my time on preparing sermons for His people in our worship service. What I learned from Scripture, I passed on to others by the movement of Holy Spirit. I always pray to the Lord for helping people to understand His words and to obey. I also ask the Lord to bless me so that I can preach in ways they may understand and apply in their daily lives. In addition, I have cared new believers by teaching the doctrinal lessons to them on Every Thursday evening. Please let me tell you one of our mission trips recently in Tateav village. It took us about 30 minutes to get this village by motorbike. The road is red alongside trees cov-ered with red on surface. It seemed all things are dye by red color. Villagers are living with farm and raising pets. So, we looked for opportunities to meet villagers and to tell them about the great love story from the Bible. Following our program, we have been met and shared the Gospel message to 18 families. 18 people from them have accepted to Jesus Christ as their Savior. Please pray for: • Home Church’s growth both in knowledge of God’s word and love for Jesus. • Each member who has joy in the Lord both in hand working and worshiping. • New believers will stand firm in Christ, not turn back to Buddha who has no

power. • Children Bible class on Sunday will be much blessed. • Safe mission trips and opportunities to teach the gift of salvation to many. Thank you so much for your love and prayers!

U nfit: The Christian who grum-bles and/or complains is unfit to be used by the Lord. This one

cannot hear the Lord, their prayers are of no avail, and the reading of Scripture is unprofitable. They are not fit to do any good, are unfit for duty, will cer-tainly take no joy in serving the Lord, and are unable to truly commune with God. Complaining fills them with cares, fears, distractions, and vexations; all these makes one unfit to be used by the Lord in any profitable way.
