TRANSCRIPT
WelcomeIt is a great pleasure to be back to direct this year’s Cambridge Summer Music Festival, and to experience once more the delight of promoting so much music and so many wonderful musicians. Many of them have been nurtured in Cambridge itself and it is with pride we welcome the cellists Laura van der Hjeiden and Graham Walker, tenor Alessandro Fisher, pianist Ashok Gupta and harpist Anna Lapwood.
Music by Beethoven and for the piano are key themes this year. The fantastic Aurora Orchestra play Beethoven’s ‘Eroica’ Symphony entirely from memory, while Freddy Kempf performs his 4th and 5th Piano Concertos with the five-piece ensemble Wiener Kammersymphonie. The French pianist Patrick Hemmerlé plays the entire 48 Preludes and Fugues by Bach, while Ivana Gavric not only plays a piano recital in the Fitzwilliam Museum, but also Schumann’s wonderful piano concerto with the young Outcry Ensemble.
Young musicians, world music and jazz, choral music, music outdoors and for families – throughout these pages I hope that you will find concerts of musical breadth to bring delight to your summer. We hope the 2017 Festival provides you with many happy musical memories to savour for a long while to come!

FESTIVAL OPENING: MOZART REQUIEMThursday 13 July 2017, 7.30pmKing’s College Chapelby kind permission of the Provost and Fellows of King’s College
Festival Chorus Orpheus Sinfonia Stephen Cleobury conductor
Gemma Summerfield soprano Elizabeth Fleming mezzo-soprano Nick Pritchard tenor Christopher Webb bass
Elgar Serenade for StringsMozart Requiem Mass
Mozart’s unfinished Requiem, composed while he was also completing two operas, is one of the most poignant and beautiful works in the choral repertoire. Imagine his friends visiting him the night before his death to sing through what had so far been written – and Mozart writing the last notes he ever composed, the first eight bars of the Lacrimosa – and you have a piece that has been in the hearts of singers and listeners alike for the last two hundred years.
The Festival Chorus, made up of singers from choirs around East Anglia, join the Orpheus Sinfonia to perform this great work. Stephen Cleobury directs the choir and orchestra plus a quartet of top soloists in the wonderful setting of King’s College Chapel.
Twinned perfectly with the Requiem is Elgar’s serene Serenade for Strings. Where Mozart’s piece was his last, the Serenade was one of Elgar’s first, and was in fact declared by Elgar to be his favourite work.
Tickets for this concert are only available from King’s College Box Office.

LUCY PARHAM: ELEGIERACHMANINOFF – A HEART IN EXILESunday 16 July 2017, 7.30 pmHoward Theatre, Downing Collegeby kind permission of the Master and Fellows of Downing College
Lucy Parham piano and script Henry Goodman narrator
Known internationally for her ‘composer portraits’ in words and music, pianist Lucy Parham has created a programme which chronicles the life of composer and pianist Sergei Rachmaninoff. Though he became an exile in 1917, Russia remained deeply rooted in Rachmaninoff’s soul. His cultural identity and longing for his homeland imbue his music, not least the many works he wrote for his own instrument, the piano.
The narrative, scripted from letters and diaries, follows Rachmaninoff from his youth in Russia, through his subsequent self-imposed exile in 1917, and finally to California, USA, where he died in 1943.
The programme includes many of Rachmaninoff’s best-loved works for solo piano, including a selection of Preludes, Etudes-Tableaux and Moments Musicaux, some of his own transcriptions and the haunting Elégie, as well as works by Scriabin and Tchaikovsky.

AURORA ORCHESTRATHE ‘EROICA’ FROM MEMORYFriday 21 July 2017, 7.30pmWest Road Concert Hall
Aurora Orchestra Nicholas Collon conductor/presenter Tom Service presenter
Strauss Metamorphosen Beethoven Symphony no 3 in Eb major, ‘Eroica’(preceded by an introduction with live excerpts)
Bold, fresh and fearlessly virtuosic, everything Aurora Orchestra touches sounds new. In recent seasons the orchestra has attracted particular acclaim for performances of whole symphonies entirely from memory. Unique amongst orchestras worldwide, this remarkable approach allows players to connect with the music and audiences on a new and intensely personal level. Tonight Aurora delivers what is thought to be the first memorised performance of Beethoven’s ‘Eroica’ Symphony. With introductions from Tom Service and conductor Nicholas Collon, the orchestra will harness the potential of a memorised performance to get under the skin of this groundbreaking work.
The programme opens with Richard Strauss’s Metamorphosen. Toward the end of his life Richard Strauss underwent a profound aesthetic change that resulted in some of the composer’s most intensely personal and philosophical music. Scored for 23 solo string players, this ecstatic, elegiac work closes with an ‘Eroica’ quotation that mourns the devastation brought about by World War II.
“Aurora is the most bracing breath of fresh air to invigorate the British classical music scene in the past ten years.” (Richard Morrison, The Times)

SILENT FILM WITH ORGAN IMPROVISATIONWednesday 26 July 2017, 9pmSt John’s College Chapelby kind permission of the Master and Fellows of St John’s College
Richard Hills improvised organ accompaniment
A unique opportunity to see The Phantom of the Opera as you have never seen it before – with live accompaniment on the great organ of St John’s College. It’s hard to think of a better place to see this most gothic of all silent films, or of a more spine-tingling accompaniment. Richard Hills is one of the very few musicians truly to have bridged the divide between the classical and theatre organs; his skill in improvising live to this classic adaptation of Gaston Leroux’s story is awe-inspiring.

Tomáš Svoboda String Quartet no 12, Op 202, ‘Post Scriptum’Janáček String Quartet no 1, The Kreutzer SonataSchubert String Quintet in C major, Op 163
Another opportunity to hear the superb Martinů Quartet, and two more works by Czech composers. Tomáš Svoboda wrote his String Quartet no 12 during the autumn of 2010. Svoboda wrote to a member of the Martinů that this work should express the sense of loss of his friends: “the longer you live, the more likely you are to lose your friends”. But, he adds, the “quartet is positive – a celebration of life”, and says it is a work of deep feeling in which all human experience is accepted and transformed into tenderness.
A very different mood is provided by Janáček’s Kreuzer Sonata, sometimes called a ‘wordless opera’ because of the way the unfolding music captures the intense dialogue, emotion and turmoil of the characters in Tolstoy’s novella which inspired the quartet.
And to bring this evening of deeply moving music to a close the quartet is partnered by cellist Graham Walker in Schubert’s String Quintet in C. Composed only two months before Schubert’s death in 1828, the transcendental beauty of the work is generally recognised as his most profoundly sublime composition.

CHORAL WORKSHOP: THE TENEBRAE EFFECTFriday July 28 2017, 11am-1pmRobinson College Chapelby kind permission of the Dean of Robinson College
The Tenebrae Effect is an inspiring choral development initiative developed by Tenebrae, one of the world’s leading vocal ensembles. It is designed to challenge and advance every participant whilst giving singers the opportunity to learn in a friendly and challenging environment. Join Tenebrae’s Artistic Director, Nigel Short, for what is set to be a fascinating and informative morning.
Most value is brought to those with prior choral experience who wish to improve within smaller, focused groups; it is suggested that participants should either be familiar with the scores or be confident sight-readers. Scores will be provided by Tenebrae on the day. Minimum age 16.

Joby Talbot’s Path of Miracles was the first major work commissioned by the award-winning vocal ensemble, Tenebrae, in 2005 and received high acclaim (“an evocative odyssey” – The Times).
To accompany its revival, Tenebrae has commissioned a unique new choral work by Owain Park, Footsteps, which allows Tenebrae to perform alongside the Children’s Choirs of St John the Divine, Kennington, and marks the fifteenth-anniversary season of this world famous choir. Candlelight, singing from memory and an imaginative use of the concert space guarantees Tenebrae at its dramatic best.
