Dear People of East Finchley

We present the 20th Annual Arts Festival, a varied and interesting week

of events for your delight. We hope you will sample them, perhaps start by

Pigs, Pubs and People

with John Pickering. Several performers make return visits to us — Massive

Violins who made such a massive impression last year; the talented Pop Up

Opera who need no introduction, the London Mozart Players and the London

Ripieno Singers who present an evening of English music and mark Gerald

Chickenshed and two local

schools will present their own programme of music. Gilbert and Sullivan will

be celebrated at the Phoenix and Fleur Adcock and Lorraine Mariner will read

their poetry at Black Gull. A piano recital by the brilliant recitalist Masayuki

Tayama and Folk Music with the Askew Sisters might tempt you….. read on...

‘Tales from the Shed’This hugely popular show for young children is informal, lively and engaging and the

children are given the opportunity to watch or become a part of the performance. By

brilliantly combining elements of storytelling, songs, dance, an array of puppeteering

styles, improvisation, slapstick and characters in full body suits, Tales from the Shed

conveys a wide range of themes and concepts, both educational and entertaining.

Fleur Adcock Lorraine Mariner

Lorraine Mariner was born in 1974 and lives in London. A librarian at the Poetry

Library Southbank Centre, her poetry collection Furniture was published by Picador

in 2009 and shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best First Collection and the Seamus

Heaney Centre Poetry Prize. Her second collection There Will Be No More Nonsense was

published by Picador in 2014.

Hazel & Emily Askew are becoming one of the most popular and respected duos on the

English folk scene. From dark ballads to uplifting dance tunes, they play with driving

energy and the unity of two people who have played together all their lives. The sisters use

voice, which won her Best Female Singer at the Spiral Earth Awards 2001. Emily and

Hazel’s latest album, In the Air or the Earth, was released by Root Beat Records to

widespread critical acclaim, including the Spiral Earth Award for Best Traditional Album

TOPSY TURVY – the story of Gilbert & Sullivan

After the mixed reception of Princess Ida, the working relationship

between W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan faltered. Sullivan had

become frustrated with Gilbert’s predictable lyrics and Gilbert

seemed to lack inspiration. Sullivan was anxious to write a

‘serious’ opera and it looked as though their partnership was at an end. Then Gilbert’s

wife suggested they visit an exhibition of Japanese life… inspiration struck and G & S

produced one of their greatest successes.

The Harington Scheme provides education and training

horticulture, retail and life skills. These include substantial

amounts of work experience, with external companies as well

as with our well-­established garden maintenance company,

Harington Gardeners, and our newly opened own charity shop

in the Archway Road.

Harington receives statutory funding from central government and local

authorities, but has to fund the "extras", eg high teacher:learner ratios that,

their full potential. We also receive valuable help from volunteers in teaching
