PHOTOGRAPHER’S STUDIO
Exactly 25 years ago, A History of Women Photographers, by Naomi Rosenblum, was
first published. The book was a shout into the void of art history. Since then, the void
has slowly begun to fill, but only slowly…until now. Photography: the art form, the tech-
nology, the male-dominated industry, has swelled with a newfound diversity of voices
to become the preeminent vehicle of pop culture and the language we all share.
As usual, you will experience many points of view and creative styles throughout
the ACP Festival (for instance, Michael Stipe, lead singer for R.E.M., will give us an
intimate glimpse of his creative process and love of photography), but it seems that a
theme has emerged.
The 2019 ACP Festival celebrates women photographers in a big way! With our
partners, we’ll be presenting lectures by two internationally-known industry leaders:
photographer, Amy Arbus, and curator, Charlotte Cotton. We’re pleased to highlight
Atlanta-based talent that celebrates girl’s empowerment: Kate T. Parker, photogra-
pher and author of the best-selling book Strong is the New Pretty, and husband and
wife photography duo, CreativeSoul, with their viral project about girls (and boys!)
rocking incredible natural hair, “Afro Art”.
Our three photographer’s master-classes are all led by outstanding women who
are crushing the industry: Sheila Pree Bright, Alice Park, and Sally Montana.
We will be right here alongside you, experiencing all this talent that enriches,
inspires and transforms.

ACP’s Twenty-First Celebration of Photography Is Here Entering the Next Twenty Years
Now in its 21st year, Atlanta Celebrates Photog-raphy continues to push the photography genre forward with a commitment to events, exhibitions and programming founded on this singularly influential art form.
Since ACP’s inception in 1998 photography has advanced in remarkable ways, moving from an often misunderstood, under-appreciated subset of contemporary art to its present status as the world’s fastest growing art form, adept at connecting us with the most relevant and timely social issues.
This year’s ACP festival spotlights the influ-ence of fashion and its power as a communica-tive form, whether in the work of noted fashion photographers and designers like Juergen Teller and Karl Lagerfeld or in the street photogra-ACP 2018 MARQUEE EVENT W/ ANNIE LEIBOVITZ

phy of Amy Arbus. Now spanning two full months, ACP 2019 also highlights a number of important female voices in the industry, both photographers and cura-tors whose work continues to advance photography as an art form.
This year’s ACPfest is notable for sev-eral exhibitions celebrating “Wunderbar Together,” the year of friendship between Germany and America. In “Mmmm!” fine art and fashion photographer Juer-gen Teller chronicles the diversity and idiosyncrasy of German cuisine and the young chefs from around the globe who are reinventing German food. Also fea-tured in “Wunderbar Together” is fashion designer and photographer Karl Lager-feld whose images celebrate the cari-cature paintings made by Bauhaus and Expressionist painter Lyonel Feininger in “Hommage an Lyonel Feininger.”
Public programs and community-based art have always been a feature
of ACP, allowing photo enthusiasts to exhibit their work, or experience pho-tography in a free, public setting. Atlanta is one of only eight cities to feature the largest public photo exhibition in North America, “The Fence,” a more than 700 foot long venue which will exhibit the work of 40 photographers from around the world along Atlanta’s popular pedes-trian thoroughfare, the BeltLine.
Also free and open to the public, “ACP Open Exhibition” in partnership with Ful-ton County Arts Council at the Abernathy Center for the Arts is an opportunity for any photo fan to display their work in this democratic pin-up show juried by photographer and Savannah College of Art and Design professor Forest McMullin. Prizes are awarded in 10 categories.
Now in its 8th year, “Teen Spirit” is an opportunity for teenagers experiencing chronic illness to use photography as a means of expression and escape. Patients
at Scottish Rite and Egleston hospital will exhibit work made over the past 12 months at Mason Fine Art and Events, in the process using art to show strength and assert their unique identity in the face of painful, challenging circumstances.
A raucous, cheeky celebration of the arts as a festive battleground, “Photo-battle” pits local photographers against each other in slide show face-offs with winners determined by audience applause. Orchestrated to dance music,

“Photobattle” unfolds in an atmosphere of creative fun.
Photography with a social message is always an important facet of ACP and this year’s programming continues that intertwining of art and issue with a series of lectures that spotlight some of the key influencers and thinkers in the photogra-phy realm.
Longtime Atlanta and now NYC-based photographer Chris Verene whose work has been featured in The New York Times, Vanity Fair, Harper’s, Newsweek and Artforum, will be featured in a solo photo exhibit at Marcia Wood Gallery as well as a film screening and panel discussion centered on his short films at Midtown Art Cinema. “Home Movies” follows Verene’s extended family in rural Galesburg, Illinois who the photographer has documented for three decades in their struggles with meth addiction, foster care and the myr-iad social issues that unfurled following

the disastrous 2008 downturn. New York Times critic Ken Johnson calls the series “an uncommonly sensitive and affecting form of Social Realism.”
In a public lecture inspired by her work centered on empowering and celebrating female accomplishment “Strong is the New Pretty” Atlanta-based photographer Kate T. Parker will speak about her bestselling book of the same name (also a philanthropic initiative), and how all of us can move beyond the limitations imposed on girls through the internet and social media, to instead celebrate their power and individuality.
A major influencer in the photogra-phy world, curator and writer Charlotte Cotton (Photography is Magic) will lecture at the High Museum. Cot-ton has worked at London’s Victoria & Albert Museum and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The daughter of celebrated photographer Diane Arbus
and a remarkable talent in her own right, Amy Arbus will focus her lecture on portraits that move her and the stories they tell. Known for her iconic images of New York nightlife and streetlife in the influential alt media publication The Village Voice, Arbus has often looked at how fashion defines identity and is an expression of creativity.
Photography’s power is its adapt-ability and how it lends itself to cross-pollination with so many other disci-plines. A creative icon known for his commitment to a variety of art forms beyond music, R.E.M. frontman for 31 years Michael Stipe is this year’s ACP Marquee Speaker. Stipe, whose love of images extends to his role as a film producer (Velvet Goldmine, Being John Malkovich), will speak about his lifelong relationship with photography, and his newly launched photography book Our Interference Times: a visual record.

Artist's TalkOct 02, 7 PM
Michael Stipe, American, born 1960, is an artist, producer and singer/songwriter. He fronted the band R.E.M. for 31 years, selling over 100 million records and touring the world. As film producer he made over 25 feature films, including Spike Jonze’s Being John Malkovich and Todd Haynes’ Velvet Goldmine. As music producer, he has worked with Vic Chesnutt, Fischerspooner, and Flash To Bang Time, among others. For the past decade his personal focus has been cross-medium work, incorporating video, soundscape, sculpture, and photographic and digital imagery. Recent books include Volume 1 with Jonathan Berger (2018) and Our Interference Times: a visual record with Douglas Coupland (2019). He lives in New York City and Berlin.
“The tug of war between pixels and halftone, between past memory and new memory, and their vagaries of representation, is an endlessly fascinating and technically challenging field. Our Interference Times: a visual record is about that—its moiré patterns, its signal to noise, its interferences, its consonances and dissonances, its jittery disruptions, and the extreme present tense that we’re enveloped in.” —from Our Interference Times: a visual record with Douglas Coupland

ACP SPECIAL EXHIBITION– PICTURING JUSTICEOctober 16, 6 PM @ Atlanta Legal Aid Society
Featuring a commissioned project by Robin Rayne, and photographs by Kirti Bassendine, Virginia Carr, Dustin Chambers, Maura Friedman, Shine Huang, Kara Johnson, Lili Kobielski, Jerrold Mobley, Montalvo & McMullers.
TICKETSThis event is free and open to the public. Family friendly.
Opening Reception: Oct 16, 6 PM
Exhibition: Oct 16–Nov 30
The core of Legal Aid’s mission is to help low-income people navigate the complexities of the court system at the most vulnerable times in their lives. Legal Aid’s clients face evictions, health crises, foreclosure, domestic violence, educa-tion issues and consumer challenges that can only be solved with the help of a lawyer.
“Picturing Justice” is an annual exhibition that explores how photography can illuminate the human stories that live behind such common shorthand as “case”, “client” or “issue” so we can better experience, empathize and advocate for the lives that are improved by this important work.
This year’s “Picturing Justice” features a group exhibition as well as a photo-essay created by photographer Robin Rayne and writer Robin McDonald. The photo essay revolves around the 1999 Olmstead Decision, a Supreme Court victory initiated by lawyers of Atlanta Legal Aid. The ruling required the State of Georgia to provide community support to those with disabilities rather than interring them intermittently in mental health facilities. 20 years later, we explore how the decision continues to affect clients of Atlanta Legal Aid.
