Every year, La Strada is a home game; and after 15 years it is time and again marvellous to experience the heartfelt emotion with which the festival is being received by the city’s inhabitants. But this year it will be a very special one: following on from last year’s collaboration with Mari-bor, this year we will co-operate with both European Capitals of Culture 2013, namely Košice (Slovakia) and Marseille. Besides international fo-cus areas, which are also already being worked on for 2014, this year we pay particular attention again to collaboration with Austrian artists and the developments of our own city.

This journey through Graz is about overcoming barriers, seizing the streets for both people and artists, utilising them as a stage, musical instrument and performance location. La Strada 2013 is an invitation to become acquainted afresh with our own city, to discover why Graz is also Lisbon or how it feels to traverse places through which as yet not many people have walked. We invite you to take a seat and experience how the seemingly everyday gives rise to artistic moments, to pause for a moment this summer, to venture a dance step and a glance skyward.

How closely artistic engagement and urban development are linked is revealed not only by Willi Dorner’s project, which opens up new perspec-tives of the city and makes changes and metamorphoses visible. How traditional places can be experienced entirely anew, is displayed not only in the projects by Josef Klammer in Herz-Jesu-Kirche church and by Reinhard Ziegerhofer in St. Andrä Kirche church. And how virtuoso, cheerful, colourful and touching today’s (street) thea-tre and contemporary circus can be, is shown by performers, artists, mu-sicians, actors and dancers in the 22 productions which will be hosted in Graz this year from 26th July till 3rd  August, in order, together with you, to give birth to a festival.

The end is nigh right from the start: after last year’s overwhelming success, this year, “7 Fingers” will open La Strada with their new pro-duction “Traces”, which is about the explosion of life in the face of the ultimate catastrophe. “Traces” is set in an emergency shelter, behind its doors seven people anticipate the end of the world, determined to live everything to the fullest in these last moments, to leave nothing unsaid, not to miss out on anything, so to leave traces behind. They counter destruction with a creative process; their instruments are their bodies – which the exceptional artists employ in wide-ranging forms of expression from dance through song and speech to extreme acrobatics. They succeed in this with such virtuosity that the Los An-geles Times wrote: “Somewhere between your eye and your brain, logic gives up. There are some physics even Stephen Hawking can’t explain.” “7 Fingers” combine acrobatics with street art such as skateboarding and basketball, mixing it with theatre and contemporary dance ele-

BlaaS oF GloRy (Netherlands)hIGhWay To hell

To make the whole world head bang on its “Highway to Hell” is a truly am-bitious goal. With instruments such as glockenspiels, sousaphones, flutes, cla-rinets, washboards and their voices of course, the artists want to bring back the nature of hard rock. They succeed in this divinely and powerfully thanks to their exceptional interpretation of masterpieces of their genre such as

“Iron Maidley”, great skill – and a lot of humour.

DécoR SoNoRe (France)uRBaphoNIx

Is it still possible to lead people to have an unexpected and spectacular perception of the city?, asks French artist Michel risse – and, with “Urba-phonix”, offers an impressive answer: absolutely! As street jockeys, the musi-cians of Décor Sonore utilise the city as both stage and instrument, composing symphonies from sounds scarcely con-sciously perceived anymore, such as

snatches of conversation and traffic noise, whilst playing on the city’s instruments – its wooden benches, lamp posts and plastic containers. An acoustic feast for all senses.

This performance by Atempo Circ simply is circus in grand style, with spectacular acrobatics that will leave you in awe with your mouth wide open. The Spanish group shows poetic, modern circus art under the open sky, in which the classic disciplines of aerial acrobatics, gym wheel circus performance and the Chinese pole occupy centre stage. Combining contemporary dance and live music, with “Atempo” the ar-tists create an unreal space, a no-man’s-land in the centre of the city, where four characters meet in order to share fragments of their reality – both everyday and fantastic – with each other. Also in order to bring the words of French playwright Antonin Artaud to life, who once said that there is a poetry of the senses as there is a poetry of language. This poetry can be experienced on Graz Hauptplatz main square – without admission, without barriers, packed with excitement and magic.

never before has anything been performed this way in Herz-Jesu- Kirche church: for his project, media musician Josef Klammer lets the acoustic emissions of talking dolls, games consoles, mobile phones and other computer-based toys resound, making them a constituent part of his music. Light and media artist Kurt Laurenz Theinert sets the interior of the church in motion optically, projects his reduced abstract moving pictures on columns, arch ribs, buttresses and capitals, which appear, in this way, in a completely different light, changing their sha-pe, turning inside out and dancing. And, with the organist and electro acoustician Wolfgang Mitterer, one of Austria’s most innovative compo-sers plays on the mighty Walcker organ with its 52 stops. An encounter with great worlds of light and sound.

“everything has already been said, but still not by all.”, Karl Valentin was convinced. That is why, in the context of La Strada, he is now addressed in a different and special way: in the homage entitled [to cut a long story short], Graz actor and cabaret artist Wolfram Berger reads and acts, drawing on the oeuvre of this great man from Munich, accompanied by the quirky “moving things” of puppet master Julia reichert, comprising automata, stage design and diverse characters. Together with the entire cabinet theatre team, couplets, monologues and dialogues are staged with personages and stage design drawn from the repertoire of the last 24 years and in the style of Karl Valentin’s cabinet of curiosities, while people play and dance and laugh heartily under the direction of Thomas reichert. Christian Bakanic provides for the right sound and symbiosis with music on an accordion and cabi-net theatre grand, which, amidst the performers, becomes part of this congenial production.* “to cut a long story short” – a Karl Valentin evening in the cabinet of curiosities and moving things with Wolfram Berger and Christian Bakanic

Inside a friendly man tells of the obser-vations of evolutionary biology, while outside life is passing by: “chronicle of events passing by” is a timely, arti-stic involvement with the urban, a live documentary about living things. Whi-le the audience inside the former shop premises of “Spiegel Lachmaier” on Annenstrasse hears a talk and sound collage on events taking place on the street, outside a choreography deve-

lops, which blends in with what is incidentally happening in public, and events take place that are not aware of actually being events. A co-production in collaboration with the IN SITU European network for artistic creation in public space

WIllI DoRNeR (Austria)FITTING

With his choreographic works explo-ring the relationship between body and urban space, Willi Dorner has alrea-dy been hosted in artistic and urban contexts all over the world. Toggling between performance and installation, “fitting” continues this involvement against a background of increasing restrictions and changes in our cities. How can we make public spaces acces-sible? How does the city change, how

do inhabitants react to those changes and to what extent can such transformations be influenced? “fitting” intervenes performatively in the city landscape, latching onto it and building into it.

In the beginning, Franko Gratelli suffered a bitter fate: three women left him the moment they learned of each other – and each of them presented him with their common daughter. Bernd Jeschek’s whim-sical musical comedy tells the story of this “poor” man, who has made it from a vacuum cleaner representative to a brilliant career in show business, after having hit on the profitable idea of having his three girls demonstrate their dancing ability with the “vacuum cleaner song”. Vibraphones, ukuleles, xylophones, choral singing, jazz, musical, opera, drama, poetry, fun and deadly seriousness are but a few of the elements that bring the life of the Gratellis alive on stage. And Ingrid Oberkanins, Monica reyes and Johanna Kugler, as furious performers, musicians and singers, see to it that it becomes clear to everybody why the Gratellis’ career simply could not be stopped. A whimsical musical comedy which only life itself can invent and which is tailor-made for the new La Strada venue the Lesliehof courtyard at the Joanneum Universal Museum.

What is the perfect place to stage a musical piece about understan-ding, faith and religion? exactly – and that is also why reinhard ziegerhofer’s staged fragment of oratorios “faces of a restless spirit” is performed in the St. Andrä Kirche church in Graz. priest Hermann Glettler is making this place of ecclesiastical and contemporary art available to the project of the Styrian artist – thus creating space for the two angels who venture a fugal dance to the sounds of violin and double bass, as well as for the female priest who, staggering between dogma and doubt, fashions a bridge of events consisting of texts and music. Under the direction of Dorothee Steinbauer, melodies, rhythms, sounds, symbols, gestures and words encounter each other here, while music beguiles us into allowing thoughts to be expressed loudly and into creating scopes of action that turn into a point of intersection bet-ween different mindsets, cultures and religious orientations.

compaGNIe RaRa WoulIB (France)DeBlozay

Compagnie rara Woulib takes its audience on a two-kilometre long walk, covering the entire city. The journey, together with 26  young French artists and a 30-strong choir, begins in Volksgarten park, passes through unfamiliar areas of the city to end with a celebration in a place that is undergoing major transformation. The creative process, which comes into being along the way, will be shared with up to 400 people participating in the procession; what is displayed here is magic that often remains unseen in everyday life and results from the city’s past in interaction with its relatives from history. “Deblozay” – chaos in Creole – is a charming and inspiring journey across the memories of the city – on which it would be better to embark in comfortable shoes.

cIRque INexTRemISTe (France)exTRêmITéS

The search for balance and trust, the challenge of being constantly in tune with the tiniest movement of someone else and one’s own weight, existing in a world that is threatened by collapse at every moment: “Cir-que Inextremiste” captivates its audience with calm, extreme acrobatics. Gas bottles, on which plain ash boards seesaw, are perfectly sufficient to take your breath away. Three men, one of them in a wheelchair, take their audience on a journey to a world where every movement is capa-ble of causing the collapse of the entire system, where three individuals can only win their fight against gravity through interaction. They will also reveal how this works in the course of workshops in which, in ideal circumstances, an adult and a child are invited to participate in pairs. More Information on www.lastrada.at

FoNDazIoNe poNTeDeRa TeaTRolISBoa (Italy)

When Italian artists ramble through the city singing and equipped with bi-cycles and drums, in order to render homage to the portuguese poet Fernando pessoa in search of his home town Lisbon, things get colourful and poetic. The eleven artists and singers of pontedera Teatro visit shops, appear on balconies, climb church steeples, allow melancholic portuguese songs to resound on squares – and return the city to its inhabitants as some-thing quite different from what they experience every day.

BaRoloSolo (France)Île o

A small water kiosk, two circus artists and the big question of whether to wet your feet or not – this combination pro-vides for 35 minutes of cheerful chaos and fascinating acrobatics, when Ma-thieu Levavasseur and William Valet of Barolosolo put on their swimwear. But they won’t let matters rest here because the story revolving around a water lover and someone afraid of water, who both support each other in overcoming their life’s troubles, is a highly sensitive musical performance too. One that is nonetheless marvellously refreshing.

mISchIeF la-BaS (Great Britain)The zoo

professor Hildeberg has discovered phenomenal creatures in the Antarctic, and now they can be admired in Graz! Anyone venturing into the mysterious container at Augarten park is first handed safety equipment, prior to being guided through the wonderful exhibition with its hibernating animals. Gretchen pankhurst accompanies the zoo visitors throughout their encounters with Arctic hedgehogs, seal bats and the Igaloopalus turtle, which are kept in “thermal vivaria”, that is fridges. The artists of Mischief La-Bas allow us to discover animals that have never before been seen by mankind, informing us with their invented science of a fictitious world and sharpening our consciousness for how we enter our world. But professor Hilderberg himself cannot be with us, he is carrying out research in the Antarctic and never travels with the zoo.

They meet between the end of the day and the beginning of the night and live in the spaces in between: intermediary stages between age groups, places, performers and the audience, who are invited to con-tribute to this artistic process. For the artists of French “GrOUpen-FOnCTIOn” it is about the democratic process in our society, about ideas of how to do things together, about the inclusion of places in the city where culture otherwise scarcely takes place, and about how we deal with each other. The path that leads there involves the story of eight individuals who come together at their playground to dance, play, dream and love – and which, in its strong artistic form, invites people to pass through a metamorphosis and to reconsider how they would like to treat their city and have new landscapes created for them.

“Goodness, what big eyes you have!” In this Little red riding Hood production by United puppets not only the wicked wolf's eyes are su-persized but also the little spectators' eyes grow really big. The Berlin ensemble electrifies with its puppet theatre in the true sense of the word; the hand puppets, which, in a dimmed room, cast this well-known Grimm fairy tale in a new form, have shaggy bodies and their heads are glowing light bulbs. Here, hunter Karl is ablaze with intense green and the female protagonist, of course, with warm red, the narrative tradition of children’s theatre being combined with modern sound and light effects. Directed by Mario Hohmann, pierre Schäfer and Melanie Sowa lend their personages character, with distinct pitches dialects and free of technological intervention, and the expert audience passionately boos the wicked wolf off stage – light-emitting diode eyes aside!

Assembly work has not been completed yet and the performance is already get-ting started! And what a great, vivid performance it is when the Tcher-katrova family invites to its “Un petit bal de rien du tout”, its “small ball of nothing at all”. The actors of flesh and blood, fabric and paper sing and play and dance, letting dreams and clothes fly and marionettes fall in love. With humour and poetry, “Les zanimos” address themes such as otherness, tolerance and age – whilst not forgetting love.

When the hen has an old wolf over, the other animals of the village stop by, just to be on the safe side! The pig, duck, sheep and billy goat don’t want to miss out on simply sitting in, while the stranger is preparing something as strange as the mysterious stone soup. That evening all sensitivities towards each other are forgotten – until the wolf departs the next day, taking the soup stone with him once again ... insights into a rural idyll for theatre fans between 5 and 105.

“All good things must come to an end” – this is also true for La Strada. In order for the end to be as colourful, vivid and beautiful as the festi-val itself, for this year’s finale party Wolfgang Temmel’s sound collec-tive “LenIns WHeeLCHAIr” will perform in Lesliehof courtyard. Here the entire team and friends of La Strada will enjoy this uninhibited proletariat of chords, so to speak, which, by its own account, “strikes up many-faceted intertonal sounds with everything, lying between blues and hillbilly, free jazz and atonal sound masses, that has ever reached the human ear.” When it comes to the joint finale, Wolfgang Temmel’s ukulele, Kurt Bauer’s violin, Leonore Hollauf’s bass, Gerhard neubauer’s guitar and Anne Weinhardt’s drums reach the human ear with grand virtuosity – adding up to an invitation to dance along, to let go and to enjoy. The time for the collective to start work and for everyone else to party is 10pm.

La Strada asks people for a dance, blocks traffic and completely chang-es the rhythm of the city for three days. In collaboration with "Tan-go-Baustelle Graz" an air of Buenos Aires will waft on the first evening over the city, when tango is the dance of the night, enabling Graz peo-ple to practice sensual rock steps under professional guidance and with live music performed by Christian Bakanic and his Trio Infernal. The pace will be slightly faster on the second evening, when samba and salsa are next up on the agenda, and when edison Tadeu da Silva al-lows Caribbean flair and Cuban groove to diffuse through the city. And things will get downright Styrian on the third evening, when resi Härtel and The CiTollConnection bring to the street modern Styrian dance music to which people can dance with hints of tradition whilst whirling around under the trees. Once this outdoor entertainment is over, it will continue in Café Kaiserfeld – presumably not altogether silently.

When nights are closing in again, circus stories will once again be hosted at the Orpheum in Graz. In the context of “Cirque noël”

stories will be told in an outstanding manner: completely without language and therefore in a universally comprehensible way. Since the foundation of “Cirque noël” in 2008, La Strada has

successfully pursued the goal of featuring both a high-class and an entertaining programme at Christmas time in Graz, which

accommodates all artistic facets from drama, via dance, live music and acrobatics through to puppet theatre.
