A festival for discovering nature

Every year since 2007, the Fte de la nature (Festivalof Nature) has given the French an enthralling

opportunity to visit the countrys most remarkable

and also its most ordinary natural sites, in the

company of professionals and volunteers whose mission

it is to protect and manage wildlife, to enhance

its beauty, and to make sure that its vitality

and biodiversity are maintained.

Celebrating everywhereDuring the festival, every charity, company

and professional or non-prot network runs nature

excursions and a range of the most festive possible

activities. These are given Fte de la nature

accreditation if they meet the criteria set out in the

Festival Charter (see appendix). The full programme

is available on a region-by-region basis, and published

on the website www.fetedelanature.com.

Festival of Nature - 10

Consistently successfulIn its very rst year, the Fte de la nature gave rise

to more than 200 events around France, with over100,000 participants. The following year (2008),

600 nature excursions attracted 200,000 enthusiasts.

In 2009, despite adverse weather, nearly

1,000 events saw 400,000 people make a beeline

for nature. The 2010 target: 1,500 excursions,

and one million participants!

Simple, devolved organisationAcross France, each nature-protection network,

each charity, each municipality and even each willing

person holds as many events as they like and registers

them online at www.fetedelanature.com. The Fte

de la nature secretariat checks that they meet

the festivals principles and approves them. They are

then added to the programme.

An unforgettable dayAt 9.30am, birdsong. At 11am, plants and owers.

At 2pm, the mysterious and little-known world

of spiders. At 4pm, nettles in all their forms. And

at 8.30pm, an evening of astronomy with the stars

and planets. Whatever they lay eyes on a roe

deer, a wild boar, a honey buzzard, a great spotted

woodpecker, a salamander, or a midwife toad

participants always return full of wonder after a day

spent looking and listening out for fauna that is often

discreet but occasionally curious.

Business in actionFrom year one, leading companies teamed with nature-

protection networks to make the project a success.

Veolia, La Poste, EDF, Nature & Dcouvertes open their

sites to the public, hold nature excursions

for their employees or business partners, and become

ambassadors who promote nature to their customers.

In 2010, Lafarge joined the Fte de la nature

and is working hard to take the project international.

Maximum media exposure

The Fte de la nature is backed by a large internationalmedia group (Bayard), which conveys the news to all of

its publics especially children, teens, parents and

pensioners. A national-radio network (France Bleu)

and a national-television network (France 3)

also partner the operation.

The festival generates huge media coverage: several

thousand articles in the national and regional press.

2010: A Neighbourly Celebration of Nature!To celebrate the International Year of Biodiversity,

the French Ministry of Ecology and all Fte de la nature

partners are eager to make this years festival

an extra-special occasion. The event is being extended

from two to ve days so that schools can get involved.

Partner magazines, municipalities and participating

networks will release 10 million yers in advance:

people can then customise and drop them in their

neighbours letter-boxes, inviting them to take part

in a nature excursion or nature-lovers picnic.

A website to manage the festivalThe event is coordinated nationally via its website.

In advance, all organisers register their event(s)

on the site, using an online form. Once approved

by the festivals secretariat, events are added

to the national programme. Website visitors can search

the events list by criteria to do with geography, specic

themes (birds, insects, botany, etc), and access

(strenuousness, accessibility for people with reduced

mobility or for children, etc).

4 w Biodiversity protection is vital to securing a future for all.

Our country is making an important commitment to this protection within its borders.
