T. J. JOHNSON’S BAND www.tjjohnson.co.uk
T.J. Johnson is widely considered to be one of the UK’s finest jazz and blues singers. He is also an accomplished piano player, drummer and a respected bandleader. Always a true ambassador of the soul, TJ sings songs of love lost and gained, of life wholesome and corrupt, songs of hope, songs of the night, all with the true passion and boozy swagger of only a man who has been there and knows. Backed by his group of top British musicians TJ plays an extraordinary blend of music that transcends the boundaries of jazz, blues, soul, country and gospel and is influenced by the likes of Ray Charles, Dr John, Louis Armstrong, Johnny Cash, BB King, Nina
Simone, Alberta Hunter, Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Witherspoon and many more. His distinctive voice and unique personal stage manner brings both the band and the audience together to create an intimate yet exciting atmosphere that is rarely equalled. TJ and his band have toured extensively both in the UK and overseas for twenty years or more and now while still maintaining a high profile at international festivals and venues he is very involved in creating a vibrant new London music scene where TJ’s style and mix of music seems to be proving very popular with the young trendy’s and older jazz fans a like. ‘The frontiers between jazz and blues are becoming blurred - as his latest CD exemplifies (jazz Rag) ‘Spicy modern day jazz’ (The Independent) ‘A Barnstorming outfit driven by youthful enthusiasm’ (jazz UK)

PENMAN’S JAZZMEN George Penman sadly died two years ago after a long illness. Illness did not stop him from continuing on his impressive road as Scotland’s top band, keeping trad jazz alive in very strong fashion - and George was not least a very strong supporter of the Isle of Bute Jazz Festival. The same great distinctive sound, sure to get your feet tapping. The Band are now a co-operative and maintain their position as Scotland’s Top Territory Band.

BILL SALMOND’S LOUISIANA RAGTIME BAND
Bill Salmond's Louisiana Ragtime Band was formed in Edinburgh in1969, and quickly developed a strong local following which it has retained and augmented over the years. The band has remained true to the New Orleans tradition and aficionados will recognise strong echoes of the sounds made famous by the George Lewis Ragtime Orchestra in the 1950's and 60's. Nonetheless the band has reprised the Classic New Orleans repertoire with freshness as well as authenticity, and this in strong measure accounts for its popularity at jazz festivals throughout Europe as well as in the United Kingdom, In recent years the band has made highly successful appearances at festivals as diverse as the Orkney Islands and Davos (Switzerland). The band's performances reflect the commitment both to restating New Orleans standards and rediscovering some of the fine tunes made popular by dance and jazz bands in the 1920's and 30's. The bands style is built on a fluid rhythmic pulse of bass, banjo, drums and piano - the heart of any New Orleans band. The front line of clarinet and trombone is versatile and vibrant, inventive but still loyal to the New Orleans tradition.

THAT SWING SENSATION That Swing Sensation are a group of musicians, brought together by Glasgow-based saxophonist Jon Ritchie, who play jazz, big band swing and dance music for festivals, functions, weddings, and dinners.
They are probably now one of Scotland's busiest dance bands with performances across the country, from Inverness and Aberdeen in the north down to Dumfries and Galloway in the south, as well as a popular series of monthly big band dance nights in the central belt. The band’s repertoire covers a large range of classic charts from the 30’s, 40’s 50’s and beyond. Their enthusiastic interpretation of dance band favourites from Miller, Ellington and Goodman, and the vocals of Simone, Sinatra, and the Rat Pack – and a bit of good ol’ rock n’ roll - make sure there is something for everyone. One of the main aims of the band is to get everyone dancing. In 2010, they were delighted to get Glasgow dancing into the record books when they produced and performed their second Guinness World Dance Record- winning programme.
The band’s other regular appearances include performances at the Edinburgh Fringe, Historic Scotland events, and Armed Forces and VE day celebrations where their 1940’s sets prove a firm favourite. GEORGE RODGER GYPSY JAZZ
The band has been playing in Central Scotland for the past five years and after a spell of retirement from the music business, George (guitar) brought together some of his past colleagues to concentrate on Gypsy style Jazz mainly in the vein of the legendary Django
Reinhardt and more recently Bireli Lagrene. Three members of the ensemble are brothers! Big Frank Henery (guitar) has a unique style very much of his own and was greatly influenced by the late great Barney Kessell. He has accompaniment from the younger members of the family in the form of Danny (accordion) and also John (double bass). To complete the quintet is Tony Muir (drums/percussion). All musicians play a wide selection of jazz and their program will display this. George Rodger (guitar) Frank Henery (guitar) Danny Henery (accordion) John Henery (bass) Tony Muir (drums)

CHICAGO TEDDYBEARS
SOCIETY JAZZ BAND It's not what you do, it' the way that you do it" and there is something about the way the Chicago Teddybears Society Jazz Band do it that attracts large audiences everywhere they go. Based in North West of England since the early 1970's the band has undergone one or two changes, but the current line-up have been together for the last twelve years resulting in the tight, polished performances which are the hallmark of the band. The Teddybears are acclaimed as one of the most entertaining bands in the UK, with a repertoire ranging from Dixieland through New Orleans to Mainstream, have thrilled audiences with their exuberance and vitality. As the band's reputation has grown they now travel extensively throughout the country for Jazz Festivals, private functions or corporate events, hence the saying "Have band will travel". However, such is, the demand from their staunch local supporters that they still play monthly residences at three or four of the best jazz scenes in the North West.

MIKE WHELLANS A longtime fixture on the British and European club, concert, TV, radio &festival circuit, as a solo performer former, band leader and session musician, and having toured in Canada and the USA, Mike Whellans is once again making his mark in the UK - he went down a perfect storm at, the 2005 Glastonbury Festival. Born in the Scottish Borders Mike began his musical life in the late 1950s/early 1960s playing his father’s drum kit. By age 14 he was playing in local dance bands and in 1969 Mike decided to turn professional. Now, Mike’s back home again in the Scottish Borders and working as Scotland’s only (as far as we know) one-man blues band - and there aren’t that many in the UK either - with his guitars, mouth-harps, vocals and drum-kit - and of course his show-stopping, “mouth percussion. Not to be missed at The Esplanade Hotel on Sunday night.
Angela Duncan & Paolo Angela and Paolo met when they were working on a cruise ship liner in the Caribbean for Costa Line Cruises. Angela, who originally comes from Rothesay on the Isle of Bute, Scotland, and Paolo who is from Livorno in Italy have been working all over the world for quite a few years now. Coming from different areas of the 'entertainment business' (Angela from theatre/cabaret and Paolo from orchestra & dance bands), they put together their experience to create a unique and entertaining evening. Catch their easy listening music at Rothesay Golf
Club on Friday night from 2000-2300

ROSE ROOM Formed in summer 2010, Rose Room comprises virtuoso violinist and vocalist Seonaid Aitken, Jimmy Moon on double-bass with guitarists Tom Watson and Tam Gallagher completing the line-up on solo and rhythm guitars respectively. The music embraces many of the songs of the swing jazz era with a dash of western swing thrown in for good measure. Tom Watson and Tam Gallagher are probably best known for their work as Swing Guitars, first came to prominence after winning the Danny Kyle open stage at 2001 Celtic Connections, they have since performed at festivals in the UK and Europe and have established themselves as a formidable live act. Seonaid Aitken is well known as a solo artist in her own right and indeed is a fellow Danny award winner having received the award in 2010. Seonaid also performs with her own Seonaid Aitken Set, playing music rooted in a more traditional folk style but with a modern twist. Rose Room is a new direction for Seonaid having developed a passion for swing jazz listening to Stephane Grappelli. Jimmy Moon needs no introduction to guitar players. Long term member of The Moonshiners bluegrass band, number one guitar builder in Scotland, his instruments are played throughout the world by the cream of musicians, however it is the double bass that Jimmy turns his hand to in Rose Room. Nothing more needs to be said other than to prepare to be entertained and charmed by this exciting new band.
