In Portugal people celebrate the day in which the three Kings found little Jesus in a cave in Bethlehem. It is celebrated on the 6th January.
In the villages, people go from house to house and sing traditional carols about Jesus life and they are invited to enter the house and eat something. People eat a special cake with fruits called bolo- rei.
Carnival is the time of great joy and playing tricks.
People wear fancy dresses and make long parades.
In the towns there are fancy dress parties but in the villages people go to the street to play.
EASTER
People celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. The priest and his acolytes bring the Cross to the houses and people kiss it. He says Halleluiah when he enters the houses.Children give olive branches to their godparents and receive a gift which is called folar. 4
Father’s day is celebrated on the 19th
March in honour of Saint Joseph, Jesus’
father.
Children make postcards and poems to
offer their fathers.
Mother’s day in now celebrated in Portugal on the first Sunday of May. Children make cards and poems for their mothers and offer small presents like flowers.

of Liberty. In 1974, Portugal became

Rock in Rio is an international music festivalThe first Rock in Rio was is Rio de Janeiro
in1985.Since 2004 it has taken place in Lisbon.It is the biggest Music event in Portugal with a lot
of the most famous rock bands performing.
The day of Portugal is celebrated on the 10th June.
It remembers our national writer Camões, who wrote the epic poem Lusiads in memory of the Portuguese deeds during the discoveries.
There are three Saints who are very popular in Portugal.Santo António is celebrated in Lisbon on the 13th June.
São João is celebrated in Porto and Braga on the 24th June.
São Pedro is celebrated in Póvoa de Varzim on the 29th June.
There are a lot of music festivals in Portugal during the months of July and August.

Festa do Avante is a cultural celebration and a music festival with a duration of 3 days, held by the PCP(Portuguese Communist Party).It takes place in Quinta da Atalaia – Seixal in the first weekend of September.

This is sad day because people go to the cemetery to pray for the deceased family.

Saint Martin is celebrated on the 11th November.On this day we eat chestnuts and the adults drink the new wine of the year. Children like this party a lot. There is a legend associated to this day.

Christmas is the feast of the family. People decorate the houses and make the nativity scene and tree. On Christmas eve there is a dinner with the family and after that Santa Claus bring the presents. People put their shoes under the tree to get the presents there.
In the villages people go to the midnight mass.
The Red Bull Air Race is considered the Formula 1 of the air.In Portugal it is performed in Porto and in Lisbon but this is a world championship.
