Convention News Sunday Z June 30, 2019

Preparations for this year started last July in San Antonio, when Hahn met with Elks from Texas during the 154th convention. Actual planning and meeting began last August, a pin was designed soon after, and the committee started accepting volunteers for the event last September. Nearly 200 Elks from across Missouri will lend assistance this week.

Organizing so many volunteers isn’t easy. Hahn and his group have to juggle the availability, personal requirements, and skills of the volunteers.

“[It’s] challenging but rewarding to see all this work come to fruition,” Hahn said. “I am so very proud of our Local Support Committee’s effort and know by the end of this convention, all our volunteers will be proud to have played a role in the success I know it will be.”

Meet me in St. Louis, againThis year is the sixth time the Elks

Convention has been in St. Louis, with previous conventions in 2003, 1991, 1953, 1939, and 1899.

The Convention is an opportunity for St. Louis and Missouri to show off. Don Cook, the Missouri Elks Association State President, said that St. Louis has rich history that has long served as America’s jump-

off point to the west.“We hope that all who

attend Grand Lodge will follow the lead of Lewis

and Clark and be inspired to explore our great state,” Cook said. H

Virtual LodgesMembership records of current paid-up

Members whose Lodge lost its Charter during the current Elks year, either by revocation or surrender, have been transferred to the Virtual Lodge associated with the state to which the former Lodge was located.

Virtual Lodge Members receive a new member ship card for the current Elks year, which ends March 31st. This card will have their new Virtual Lodge Number on it and will be in effect until April 1st of the following Elks year. The card allows entry to all Lodges, the same as the previous card did.

During the first weeks of 2020, a dues notice will be sent by Grand Lodge to the Virtual Lodge Members. Upon payment, they will gain another 12 months to find a new Lodge in the Order. If the current Virtual Lodge Members do not renew or they have not found a new Lodge by March 31, 2021, they will, unfortunately, be dropped from the Order.

Helping Elks Build Stronger Communities

~ELKS NATIONAL FOUNDATION~

We Celebrate a National Gain in Membership!alterations, carefully conceived and adeptly enacted, have produced major results nationwide. We have made a convincing case that, con-trary to the previous decades of negative trends, our positive

changes have profoundly altered our culture and our future. One of the most interesting aspects of our membership turnaround is the way we use social media. This reaf-firms that human beings are pro-foundly social beings influenced by and influencing other human beings. The Elks are a great social organization, and our nation’s premier Patriotic and charitable organization. By properly and passionately applying these great strengths, the Elks have enormous growth potential. After all, when Elkdom Shines—Elkdom Grows!

Boys’ Champ Defends TitleWhat’s tougher than winning a Hoop Shoot National Champ ion

ship? Winning the Getty Powell Award, which is given to the top scoring boy and girl of the Hoop Shoot National Finals. What’s tougher than winning a Getty Powell Award? Winning it two years in a row!

For the first time in the history of the Elks Hoop Shoot, Anthony Thompson [left top photo], sponsored by Lebanon, Ohio Lodge No. 422, took home a second Getty Powell Award after winning the boys’ 10- to 11-year-old division. He was perfect in regulation, a tense tie-breaker, and a three-way Getty Powell shoot-off.

To say he works well under pressure would be an understatement—he thrives.

On the girls’ side, in her first year of competing in the Hoop Shoot and last year of eligibility, Jamisyn Stinson [left bottom photo], sponsored by New Lexington, Ohio Lodge No. 509, took home the coveted trophy. She had an outstanding shooting streak throughout her year in the Hoop Shoot, which ended with the 12- to 13-year-old girls’ championship and Getty Powell Award. Not bad for a beginner!

The Hoop Shoot season will start back up in the fall with contests taking place at Lodges across the nation. The 2020 Hoop Shoot National Finals will be held on April 18, 2020 in Chicago.

Exalted Rulers: St. Louis Reports due in October!

Exalted Rulers (or alternate delegates) should be reminded that they are required to attend the Annual Session and submit a Report to their Lodge no later than the first regular meeting in October. [GLS §12.120]

—————A good suggestion would be to save

each edition of the Convention News, along with a copy of the Resolutions. Also, record how you voted on each resolution and submit to the Lodge with a cover letter. That will complete the obligation of your report to your Lodge.

Conventional WisdomBy Mike ChamernikConvention News Reporter

Convention will be busy, but don’t get too caught up. It’s important to pause once in awhile.

“Take a moment each day to jot down the meetings, activities and booths you visited,” said Mike Gleason, PDDGER, of Lake Hopatcong, NJ Lodge No. 782, “thus making it a breeze to give a comprehensive report on the Lodge floor to your membership when you return home.”

Longtime Elks like Gleason, who is attending his 13th convention, are very familiar with the experience, but first-time attendees and guests could get overwhelmed.

Here are some pointers to keep you on track and make the most of your time in St. Louis.

● Be there for the Opening Ceremony at 4 p.m. on Sunday. “The grandeur of the Opening Session, the Memorial Service, the general business meetings, and the voting session certainly will make you very proud to be an Elk,” Gleason said.

● Stop by all the booths and introduce yourself to fellow Members. It will help you connect names and faces.

● Attend the mandated meetings in the morning and a seminar or two in the afternoon. Meetings allow Members to learn about projects they would like to get involved with in their Lodge.

● See the State Major Projects. “[They] give you an idea what other states are doing for the people in their state,” said Frank Kerby, PDDGER from Blue Springs, MO Lodge No. 2509.

● Visit hospitality rooms to meet Elks from across the country. “You can make new friends doing this that will last a lifetime,” said Kerby, who has attended five conventions.

● Take pictures. You’ll meet plenty of people and will remember this convention for years to come.

● Accumulate pins. Sean Reddy, the Leading Knight of Ballard, WA Lodge No. 827, said he wants to meet Elks and add to his pin collection at convention. “I wear my pins to every Initiation and and find that new Members are always interested in them,” Reddy said. “They have become a great conversation starter.”

This is Reddy’s first convention, but he’ll have some guidance. Slated to be Exalted Ruler in 2020-21, he’s attending with his Lodge’s past and present ERs. “The thought is to show the current and future the ropes so that they aren’t deer in headlights at Convention,” Reddy said.
