HSBC Building: Large-scale branding

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the

implementation of its Mandatory Provident

Fund (MPF), HSBC chose a dynamic lighting

and control solution from Traxon & e:cue for

a temporary installation on the exterior of its

headquarter building in Hong Kong, China. To

create a media screen large enough to reach

the eyes of the masses, 275 ultra-bright, fully-

customizable Dot XL-6 RGB systems were

installed on the building’s façade, resulting a

visual masterpiece capable of text, graphics,

and video animation. Suitable for daylight

viewing while able to shine brilliantly through

adverse exterior conditions, Dot XL boldly

communicated HSBC’s desired messaging

to customers, staff, and passersby, informing

everyone of the company’s achievement and

involving all in the celebration. The installation’s

eight e:pix universes were controlled via an

e:cue Lighting Control Engine fx (LCE-fx) and

a Video Micro Converter (VMC), which enabled

direct video output with pixel-to-pixel mapping,

showcasing HSBC’s advertising and celebration

messages on a dramatic scale.

The Tsim Sha Tsui Centre and the Empire Centre

were environmentally-conscious when selecting

their festive illumination them; they were the first

buildings in Hong Kong to use dynamic lighting

solutions to decorate their facades for the 2009

and 2010 holiday seasons.

Traxon’s ultra-bright, fully-customizable Dot XL

provides the flexibility needed for demanding

projects, and is designed to withstand weather-

changing environments. In this scenario, Dot

XL-6 RGB was mounted on a wire frame in

the shape of each festive icon. Additionally, a

4x16-meter Traxon Mesh RGB installation on the

buildings’ connecting skywalk displays colorful

medium-resolution graphics and animated

holiday greetings. The sophisticated, scalable,

semi-transparent LED system’s durable yet

flexible structure, allows it to adapt to many

surfaces in various applications.

Together, the projects consist of more than

18,000 customizable Traxon Dot XL-6 RGB,

and more than 100 flexible Mesh RGB fixtures.

Using up to 80% less energy than traditional

incandescent fixtures, Traxon & e:cue’s dynamic

lighting solutions save on operating costs and

conserve resources, while converting an existing

building into a notable landmark with their

stunning displays. And, due to their flexibility, the

products were able to be stored for repeat use.

Located in the central shopping area in Osaka,

the UNIQLO Shinsaibashi Flagship Store

displays a dramatic and large-scale presence

year round, rendering it a prominent attraction for

visitors in every season. The multi-story façade

glows entirely, with general or holiday-inspired

static images and graphic animations.

To achieve this monumental installation, 312

Traxon Dot XL-9 RGB were installed behind an

ETFE film, which acted as the façade’s second

skin as well as a diffusion material, spreading Dot

XL’s light smoothly across each metal-bordered

square. The fixtures were paired with an e:cue

Lighting Control Engine (LCE), 32 Butlers, and

a Connect Base 3, which allowed programming

and recall of colorful low-resolution images

and animations consisting of abstract art for

general viewing, and holiday-themed graphics

for specific seasons and celebrations. Traxon

& e:cue’s intelligent fixtures and control make

this landmark installation a relevant and exciting

feature in Osaka, all year long.

Gon Kirin, Burning Man Event: Art in motion

Gon Kiring, or “Light Dragon”, is one of the

most vibrant, animated Mutant Vehicles to be

a part of the famous Burning Man Event, which

occurs each year in the desert of an ancient,

dried lakebed. Built upon the chassis of a 1963

Dodge truck, the Light Dragon is 16 meters long

and seven meters tall, and is equipped with

festival necessities including a DJ booth, seating

for approximately 20 people, a hydraulic head

and a flamethrower mouth. But part of what

gives Light Dragon its name, is the 750 meters

of linear RGB fixtures, and several Wall Washer

XB-RGB installed all over the dragon’s body and

controlled by an e:cue Butler, that brings it to life

and gives it a vibrant glow throughout the desert.

This unique project, one of many large-scale

installation contributions to the Burning Man

Event, is one of the most artistic and unique

installations in which Traxon & e:cue’s dynamic

lighting systems have been involved. Through

the creativity and insight of LEDARTIST, our

product flexibility has been taken to a new level.

Priscilla Queen of the Desert The Musical, brings

Traxon & e:cue’s complete LED system solutions

to center stage. The most colorful character

in the production, Priscilla is a pink, life-sized

bus that transports three friends on an exciting

adventure through the Australian outback.

Covered with 219 custom Traxon String RGB

systems, Priscilla glows, dressed in over 35,000

pixels of LED illumination. And behind the bus,

an additional 44 custom String RGB systems

are woven together, creating an automated

flitter drop. Eleven e:cue Video Micro Converters

(VMCs) control the 126,240 e:pix channels,

displaying two-dimensional video on a three-

dimensional object. The video content is also

capable of being manipulated in real-time,

allowing Priscilla’s graphics to often reflect what

is happening around her, on stage. The versatility

of Traxon’s String RGB, combined with the

advanced capabilities of e:cue lighting controls,

creates an effect that perfectly personifies

and animates Priscilla, allowing her dynamic

character to shine.
