The world’s most famous blue engine and pre-schoolers’ favourite, Thomas the Tank Engine, is gearing up for his biggest adventure yet in Thomas & Friends: Big World! Big Adventures! The Movie – the brand new 80-minute CG-animated special showing from 20th July, 2018 in UK & Irish cinemas.

Thomas & Friends™: Big World! Big Adventures! The Movie features a fun-packed plot full of wonder and curiosity, plus tons of animals and several musical songs that will captivate the imagination of young Thomas fans and parents alike. This is the biggest Thomas movie to date and one not to be missed!

Thomas & Friends: Big World! Big Adventures! The Movie sees Thomas undertake his most epic journey ever as he leaves Sodor to fulfil his dream of seeing the world. The action-packed adventure begins when a mischievous little racing car called Ace comes to Sodor and inspires Thomas to embark on an ambitious trip without the Fat Controller’s permission!

This heroic quest takes Thomas across deserts, through jungles and over dangerous mountains as he travels across five continents seeing sights he has never seen before. On his journey to discover new places and cultures, Thomas makes friends with an adventurous, inspiring and fun tank engine from Kenya called Nia. ACE:

Ace is a rally car, who can be a bit full of himself. He thinks he’s cool and clever too and expects the admiration and support of everyone around him. If it’s not about him, he’s not likely to be interested. Ace is a thrill seeker, who lives for speed and loves to drive dangerously. But he’s not as brave as he’d like you to think, being rather frightened of both wild animals and water. Ace is a dreamer who sees the world as his oyster. If he could only get over himself, he might become a nice guy.

NIA:

Nia is a tank engine from Kenya in Africa. She’s a real optimist, with a great sense of fun and a playful nature. She is also driven by a strong moral compass, and takes being fair and kind to

others seriously. She’s not afraid to speak her mind when she needs to. Nia is both thoughtful and practical and has been known to come up with some very creative ideas. Her eagerness to help can sometimes irritate those around her, but her kind heart and infectious enthusiasm never fail to win them over in the end.

ACE Voice Artist - PETER ANDRE

Peter Andre is an accomplished global media star prominently known for his successful music and television career. Peter is an iconic pop star who rose to fame in the 1990s when he became the sixth highest selling artist in the UK. He’s had numerous number one hit singles, two number one albums and toured all over the world collecting a multitude of national and international awards along the way. Peter is currently performing gigs across Europe, he is also touring Australia and New Zealand again

at the end of this year.

Several years ago, Peter made the decision to bring his reality show ‘Peter Andre: My Life’ to a close after a very successful tenth series. Peter’s reality show focussed around family life and established him as one of the most doting celebrity fathers in the UK.

Peter was a firm favourite on our television screens appearing in such shows as; ‘Peter Andre’s 60 Minute Makeover’, ‘Give a Pet a Home’ and ‘Tonight at the Palladium’.

Alongside his television work he has not lost his love for music and performing and continues to perform to sell-out crowds including his fantastic fan base.

This year has seen Peter appear on BBC primetime show All Round to Mrs Brown’s Boys, shoot a TV commercial for Oykos in South Africa, appear on Saturday Night Takeaway and shoot a series of strands for This Morning and Loose Women. Recently, Peter has also worked on a healthy options campaign for McDonald’s and Johnson & Johnson as well as working on a new children’s book publishing deal.

You are voicing a new character, Ace. Who is Ace?Ace is an Aussie and he is ace – he really is. He’s a bit full of himself and thinks he’s super cool, but when you peel away the layers he’s a real little softy and everyone loves him. He has a lot of bravado, but as soon as he sees an animal, he’s petrified. He’s a really cool character and he’s a great one for me to be able to play because, being Australian, I can sometimes relate to his attitude a little bit.

What is Ace’s character like and is there anything about him that you can identify with?A lot of people think of Australians with a laid-back attitude ‘throwing shrimp on the barby’. Not everybody is like that, but I think that’s the part of Australia that a lot of people love. Australians have that care free, bright and relaxed ‘we’ll do it tomorrow’ attitude and I feel like that in my everyday life. So to be able to play a character with that ‘free and easy’ attitude is great. I hope the Aussies are happy with me doing this because it was such a buzz for me to get this and to be able to do it. It’s my first worldwide movie voiceover – it’s great!

A lot of people have this image of Australia as being very care-free. It’s so nice to play a character that represents that attitude. I looked at Ace when I was reading through the script and thought that he was exactly what I would be like. Not necessarily the cocky side, but the side that thinks everything will be fine, then trips over and does something silly. It was great to be able to put that into this character – it was great.

What do you think about Nia and all the other exciting changes that are happening to the Thomas & Friends content? I really think it’s great that Thomas & Friends are bringing the world to them. It’s really nice to see that the whole world is part of this movie and new characters have been brought in. It’s great that Nia’s been brought in to the show and Nia’s great. I’m a bit jealous because she’s mates with Thomas and I want Thomas to be my mate.

How does it feel to be involved with Thomas and Friends?Absolutely brilliant. For me, Thomas is something we all grew up on. My kids love it now, I loved it as a kid and it’s great to see that there are all these different characters from different places around the world because we have access to countries a lot more now than we did when Thomas started. People are flying all over the world, everywhere is multicultural, so it’s really nice to see that Thomas has embraced that – I think it’s going to be fantastic. I’m excited about seeing the finished product and seeing what Africa and South America and China look like. Kids are going to be watching this and saying “Wow! I really want to go there!” so I think it’s fantastic.

Thomas is about 73 years and to be honest, I think he looks great for that age. I’m 44 so when I was born, everyone already loved him! For me to be involved and a part of the family now, and a part of this legacy, it’s huge. It means a lot to me. I told my wife and she was excited, then my wife’s parents were excited, my parents were excited, my kids are excited – it’s really, really nice to be a part of.

How do you feel about sharing this with your kids?I honestly can’t wait for my children to see this. Obviously, the older children are going to understand that I am the character. It’s going to be really interesting to see how my one-and-a-half year-old and my four-year-old react trying to figure it out. I think once they get it, they will want to watch it again and again. It’s going to be a real joy that I can’t explain, being a parent and being able to sit with your child and watch something on the screen that you’re a part of. It’s going to be a magic feeling.

How much did you enjoy voicing Ace and how did you go about it in the studio?I know the movie’s going to be great, I hope my part translates well. Preparation-wise, I was a bit nervous and I didn’t quite know what to do, but there’s this hugely talented lady called Sharon Miller, who is the voice-over genius. She really coached me and directed me and I needed that. I couldn’t just walk in and know what I was doing as it was a new area for me. Having her guide me was really amazing because she was able to make me picture what the character was really like. Once we got in a flow, we worked so well together. It was a real joy. So really, she was my preparation.

How have you found working on “Big World! Big Adventures! The Movie”Hugely fun. It has been so much fun. Mega positive, had so much fun and worked with a great team of people.

NIA Voice Artist – YVONNE GRUNDY

Yvonne Grundy is a multi-talented rising actress and voiceover artist who brings to life the character of ‘Nia’, an adventurous, inspiring and fun African tank engine from Kenya and main protagonist in forthcoming Thomas & Friends feature length CG-animated special, “Thomas & Friends Big World! Big Adventures! – The Movie” and TV series of the same name.

Yvonne joins an impressive list of esteemed voiceover talent who have starred in the world-famous children’s franchise over the years including, Eddie Redmayne, Hugh Bonneville and Olivia Coleman. Importantly for Yvonne, this latest role gives her the chance to represent her home country of Kenya – a place she will always treasure and is very special for her.

Born and raised in Nairobi, Yvonne came to England to join family members when she was aged 12, and currently lives in Watford, Hertfordshire. Passionate about turning her natural talent into a performance career, she attends the Arts University Bournemouth, UK, where she is in her final year of BA (Hons) degree in Acting.

As an actress who loves being constantly challenged by the rawness of her roles, Yvonne has played ‘Caius Cassius’ at The Lighthouse Theatre in Poole in a production of Julius Caesar as well as a stint as characters ‘Francine’ and ‘Lena’ in a two-part production of Clybourne Park. Other acting highlights include playing ‘Audrey’ in an adapted version of Chekov’s The Three Sisters set in Trinidad and Tobago and written by Mustapha Matura.

Yvonne is also an active member of Cowslip Theatre, a fun storytelling theatre company that specialises in outdoor and site-specific experiences throughout the UK. Most recently she starred as ‘Anne’ in Wallflower, an original production written by Mimi Emily, which the company staged at Berry Pomeroy Castle in Totnes, Devon.

Always relishing the chance to expand her acting and stage skills, Yvonne enjoys learning about and practicing stage combat, a specialised technique in theatre designed to create the illusion of physical combat without causing harm to the performers. She has recently qualified in ‘unarmed’, ‘broadsword’, ‘rapier & dagger’ and ‘swashbuckling’ and in her spare time continues to expand her knowledge and technical know-how in this field.

Yvonne is a passionate advocate of the Arts and strongly believes that children around the world should be given an opportunity to explore and learn through music, drama and dance. Her ultimate career goal is to create an Arts programme in Kenya focussing on giving access to less-advantaged children who cannot afford to go to drama school.

● Thomas & Friends™: Big World! Big Adventures! The Movie is the thirteenth Thomas & Friends film to be produced and the longest one to date, running for 80 minutes!

● Thomas & Friends™: Big World! Big Adventures! The Movie took 21 months to

produce, 9 months to animate and took over 9500 hours of animation to complete! Did you know 25 frames are created per second of Thomas & Friends CGI animation?

● There are a total of 7 new songs in the movie including ‘Free and Easy’ guest-voiced by Australian singer and entertainer Peter Andre. Did you know the complete soundtrack will be available on Spotify in the summer?

● Did you know the song ‘Wake Up’ was recorded with local session musicians from Kenya?

● Nia (pronounced “Nee-Yah”) is a new tank engine from the African country of Kenya and her name in Swahili means “purpose” which perfectly suits her character! Nia’s engine design is based off the East African Railway’s ED1 class (EAR ED1 class) and she is a tank engine just like Thomas!

● In the movie, the Fat Controller wears 6 different hats including a Carnival headdress in Brazil and a turban while in the Sahara Desert, adopting the style of each country he visits!! Can you spot all the different hats?

● While Thomas travels around the world, we bump into old friends Carlos from Mexico and Yong Bao from China from previous movie ‘The Great Race’ .

● Look carefully and you can see a cameo of the The Rev. Awdry, the original creator of Thomas the tank engine. This is not the first time he appears in a movie ! Did you know the Rev. Awdry appears in 2 other Thomas & Friends movies: Sodor’s Legend of the Lost Treasure (2015) and The Great Race (2016); as well as 1 episode in Series 20 (Tit for Tat). The producers originally decided to include this feature for the 70th Anniversary in 2015 as a special nod towards Sodor’s creator. The Rev. Awdry had his first speaking role in the Season 20 episode Tit for Tat, reprising his role of “The Thin Clergyman” from the original story, which he wrote. These cameos have been well received by the Awdry family, who found the initial appearance ‘hilarious and a wonderful tribute to their Granpuff’. Ian McCue, Director of Creative Content, says: “Since the 70th anniversary, we have included cameos of the Rev. Awdry in all our Thomas & Friends movies as a subtle yet amusing nod to Thomas’ heritage and the family who created him.”

o Africa: Thomas travels over 5000 miles across Africa, passing through many countries as he travels from Dakar in Senegal, West Africa, all the way to Dar Es Salaam, in Tanzania, East Africa.

o South and Central America: Through a song sequence we see Thomas and Nia in search of Ace. They travel through several countries in the region including Rio De Janeiro in Brazil and The Amazon Rainforest.

o USA: They then travel to San Francisco, the Salt Flats in Utah and find themselves in The Morenci Loop in Arizona.

o China: Towards the end of his adventure, we see Thomas travelling through the Chinese countryside and famous National Park Rainbow Mountains (Zhangye Danxia).

IAN MCCUE, Director of Creative Content

Ian McCue began his career in the animation business in 1985 for Bill Melendez Productions, as part of the Ink and Paint department working on Charlie Brown and Snoopy commercials, and short film Happily Ever After.

Following this he joined renowned TV Cartoons studio to work on Raymond Briggs’ second collaboration with TVC the animated film When the Wind Blows (1986) followed in 1988 by Briggs’ Father Christmas airing in 1991. Ian’s career in Production Management began with TV series The World of Peter Rabbit and Friends, The Wind in the Willows and The Willows in Winter. His first role as a Producer came in 1999 with TV series Preston Pig, based on books by Colin McNaughton with celebrity cast including Hugh Laurie.

Ian finally settled at HIT Entertainment in 2010 as Line Producer on Thomas & Friends. In 2012, he produced his first movie for Thomas & Friends - Blue Mountain Mystery and has since been the key creative Producer for the series and further movies for Thomas & Friends. Ian is now Mattel Creations Director of Creative Content, overseeing all its pre-school properties including Fireman Sam.

MICAELA WINTER, Producer, Thomas & Friends

Micaela Winter is a highly-accomplished Producer of Mattel’s world-famous children’s television series Thomas & Friends, which is broadcast in over 100 countries and 40 languages,

who has risen through the ranks as Production Manager and Line Producer to her current Producer role. A particular success of Micaela’s career, was achieved after acting as Production Manager for Mike the Knight, when the show was awarded an International Emmy Award.

As Producer of the world-famous Thomas & Friends, at any one time she could be working on multiple episodes, short form and specials all concurrently and her day often involves a mixture of creative and logistical tasks. These range from reviewing designs, scripts and animation or listening to the latest song demo or character audition, to revising budgets, schedules and contracts.

Although Micaela had worked in animation before, one of the biggest challenges she faced whilst getting to grips with Thomas & Friends was developing an understanding of railway terminology, but luckily she could turn to – and still turns to – Railway Consultant Sam Wilkinson, who is on-hand to help explain anything she may have overlooked and works closely with Mattel Creations’ Director of Creative Content Ian McCue, as well as the rest of the Thomas & Friends brand and production team.

Micaela feels it’s important to have a new Steam Team with gender equality. Over the past few years on Thomas & Friends she says the Producers have introduced some fantastic female characters that have resonated really well with their audience, and she thinks it’s really important to continue to create both male and female characters that children can connect with. “I think it’s vital that children see characters on screen that inspire them and they can relate to and also that are reflective of the world around them”, says Micaela.
