314.16 Number of Conductors inOutlet, Device, and Junction Boxes.Boxes shall be of sufficient size to providefree space for all enclosed conductors. In nocase shall the volume of the box, as calcu-lated in 314.16(A), be less than the fill calcu-lation as calculated in 314.16(B). Boxesenclosing conductors 4 AWG or larger shallalso comply with the provisions of 314.28.

(A) Box Volume Calculations. The volume of a wiring enclosure (box) shallbe the total volume of the assembled sec-tions, and, where used, the space providedby plaster rings, domed covers, extensionrings, and so forth, that are marked withtheir volume or are made from boxes thedimensions of which are listed in Table314.16(A).

(1) Standard Boxes. The volumes of stan-dard boxes that are not marked with theirvolume shall be as given in Table 314.16(A).

(2) Other Boxes. Boxes 1650 cm3 (100 in.3)or less, other than those described in Table314.16(A), and nonmetallic boxes shall bedurably and legibly marked by the manufac-turer with their volume. Boxes described inTable 314.16(A) that have a volume largerthan is designated in the table shall be per-mitted to have their volume marked asrequired by this section.

(B) Box Fill Calculations. The volumes in paragraphs 314.16(B)(1)through (5), as applicable, shall be addedtogether. No allowance shall be required forsmall fittings such as locknuts and bushings.

(1) Conductor Fill. Each conductor thatoriginates outside the box and terminates oris spliced within the box shall be countedonce, and each conductor that passesthrough the box without splice or terminationshall be counted once. The conductor fillshall be computed using Table 314.16(B). Aconductor, no part of which leaves the box,shall not be counted.

Exception: An equipment grounding conduc-tor or conductors or not over four luminaire(fixture) wires smaller than 14 AWG, orboth, shall be permitted to be omitted fromthe calculations where they enter a boxfrom a domed luminaire (fixture) or similarcanopy and terminate within that box.

(2) Clamp Fill. Where one or more internalcable clamps, whether factory or field sup-plied, are present in the box, a single vol-ume allowance in accordance with Table314.16(B) shall be made based on thelargest conductor present in the box. Noallowance shall be required for a cable con-nector with its clamping mechanism outsidethe box.

(3) Support Fittings Fill. Where one ormore luminaire (fixture) studs or hickeys arepresent in the box, a single volumeallowance in accordance with Table314.16(B) shall be made for each type of fit-ting based on the largest conductor presentin the box.

(4) Device or Equipment Fill. For eachyoke or strap containing one or more devicesor equipment, a double volume allowance inaccordance with Table 314.16(B) shall bemade for each yoke or strap based on thelargest conductor connected to a device(s)or equipment supported by that yoke orstrap.

(5) Equipment Grounding Conductor Fill.Where one or more equipment groundingconductors or equipment bonding jumpersenter a box, a single volume allowance inaccordance with Table 314.16(B) shall bemade based on the largest equipmentgrounding conductor or equipment bondingjumper present in the box. Where an addi-tional set of equipment grounding conduc-tors, as permitted by 250.146(D), is presentin the box, an additional volume allowanceshall be made based on the largest equip-ment grounding conductor in the additionalset.
