LTG Blum Opens the 2006 National MatchesLTG Blum Opens the 2006 National Matches By Christine Elder, CMP Communications

On 10 July 2006, National Match competitors, offi cials, staff, volunteers and visitors gathered on Rodriguez Range for the Annual First Shot Ceremony. The First Shot Ceremony is the traditional opening for the National Matches. Lieutenant Gen-eral H Steven Blum, the Chief of the National Guard Bureau, had the honor of being the 2006 First Shot Speaker.

The 2006 National Matches is the 87th in an historic series of National Matches whose proud heritage looks back to the NRA “Annual Matches” that began in 1873, to the U. S. Government’s creation of the “National Matches” in 1903, to the estab-

lishment of Camp Perry as the home of the National Matches in 1907, to countless champions who walked Camp Perry’s hal-lowed ground and to tens of thousands who treasure their Camp Perry experiences.

A native of Maryland, Lieutenant General H Steven Blum currently serves as the Bureau’s 25th Chief. As Chief, he is the senior uniformed National Guard offi cer respon-sible for policies, programs and plans affecting more than one-half million Army and Air National Guard personnel throughout the United States. He was appointed by President George W. Bush in January 2003, and confi rmed by the U.S. Senate in April 2003. He has been a Special Forces offi cer throughout his career, and has commanded at every level since taking charge of a detachment in the Maryland Army National Guard’s 20th Special Forces in November 1977. As NGB Chief, he serves as the Army’s and Air Force’s offi cial channel of communication with the Governors and Adjutants General. Prior to his current assignment, General Blum served as Chief of Staff, United States Northern Command.

The Speakers Party for the ceremony included Major General Greg Wayt, the Adjutant General of Ohio, representing the Ohio National Guard, host of the National Matches; Ms. Judith Legerski, the Vice Chair of the CMP Board of Directors, repre-senting the Civilian Marksmanship Program; and Mr. John Sigler, the First Vice President of the NRA, representing the National Rifl e Association of America. The Honorable Chris Redfern, Member, Ohio State House of Representatives, District 80; the Honorable Robert Latta, Member, Ohio State House of Representatives, District 6, and the First Shot Speaker in 1998; Mr. Den-nis Fligor, representing U. S. Senator George Voinovich; Ms. Stacey Oliver, representing U. S. Senator Mike DeWine and many other Distinguished Guests attended the Ceremony.

During the opening ceremony, General Blum emphasized how vital marksmanship is in today’s fi ght against terrorism. He credited skilled marksmen with being one of the reasons Americans have preserved their freedom. He said the 4th of July should never be taken for granted and that we must earn the privilege of celebrating that holiday every year. General Blum thanked each of the ser-vices for their dedication, devotion and sacrifi ce to protect our country. Also, he thanked the many youth who were present at the ceremony for their involvement in the National Matches and noted how they are the future of the Matches and the leaders who must pre-serve our country’s freedoms in the future.

The color guard for the First Shot Ceremony was the NJROTC Color Guard from Ad-miral King High School in Lorain, OH. Beth Daniels, of Toledo, Ohio, sang the National Anthem. She frequently sings the National Anthem before Toledo Mudhens and Toledo Storm games.

LTG Blum shot the traditional First Shot with an M1 Garand. The M1 Garand was the single most signifi cant small arms development in the history of modern welfare dur-ing WWII. After the target that was 500 yards downrange exploded, General Blum posed for pictures with each of the military teams that were in attendance. The 2006 National Matches were offi cially opened and results from the new M9 EIC match posted on the CMP web site at http://clubs.odcmp.com/ntpistol. The President’s Pistol Match, National Trophy Individual Pistol Match and National Trophy Pistol Team Match took place on Sunday, 16 July. An awards ceremony followed the day’s matches beginning at 5:00 p.m.

National Trophy Rifl e and Pistol MatchesThe National Trophy Rifl e and Pistol Matches are the annual U. S. national championship in service pistol and service rifl e shooting. The National Trophy Matches were established by federal law in 1903, are still conducted under the statutory authority of the U. S. Code (Title 36 USC § 40725-40727) and are now governed by the Civilian Marksmanship Program. Shooters from all over the U. S., civilian and military, test their skills and compete to determine the nation’s best service pistol and rifl e shooters. To fulfi ll the CMP’s statutory responsibility to “instruct citizens in marksmanship,” the National Trophy Rifl e and Pistol Matches are open to all shooters regardless of skill level. Beginners compete and learn while shooting side by side with champions. The tradition of the matches and their competitions for prestigious national trophies celebrate marksmanship excellence and provide incentives to develop individual marksmanship skills, equipment and a national competition infrastructure. The CMP National Trophy Rifl e and Pistol Matches are held in conjunction with the NRA National Rifl e and Pistol Champion-ships through a partnership between the two organizations. The Ohio National Guard and U. S. Army Reserves also provide vital support for the matches. The CMP National Trophy Rifl e and Pistol Matches and the NRA National Rifl e and Pistol Championships are collectively known as the NATIONAL MATCHES.

Viale Range Project Comes Full Circle Viale Range Project Comes Full Circle

On 29 July 2006 a Viale Range Rededication Ceremony took place to mark the conclusion of a nine month renovation project that yielded a complete reconstruction of the range’s berm and pits. The day not only marked the reopening of Camp Perry’s renowned Viale Range, but it was also an opportunity to honor 2nd Lt. Robert M. Viale, a World War II hero for whom the range is named. 2nd Lt. Viale was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor during WWII. He received this distinction for a series of heroic actions that culminated when he jumped on a live grenade to save the lives of fi ve of his men. His act of extraordinary bravery was captured in a drawing by Jess Cauthorn who served under 2nd Lt. Viale in WWII. Cauthorn’s artwork was included in the program for the event.

In attendance for the rededication ceremony was 2nd Lt. Viale’s son, Brigadier General Charles R. Viale (USA, Ret.), who made brief remarks and fi red a ceremonial fi rst shot on the rebuilt range. Speakers at the event included COL James Chisman, Camp Perry Com-mander, Chaplin (MAJ) Don Zapsic; Christie Sewell, CMP Competitions and Affi liations Manager; Mike Krei, Deputy Director, NRA Competitions; and BG Matthew Kambic, Assistant Adjutant General for Army, OHARNG.

Construction began on the Viale Range Project last September with the dismantling of the 100-year-old berm and pits. Through the winter and spring, construction crews worked to rebuild the berm and install new target carriers in the pits. With the National Matches

looming, crews pushed to stay on schedule and the mild winter at Camp Perry certainly helped keep everything on track. Another im-provement to the range was the addition of a new road on the west side of the range that provides an additional access route to the pits.

The ceremony marked the beginning of the National Matches highpower phase, with the EIC M16 Match be-ing the fi rst event held on the reconstructed range. For photos of the recon-struction project visit http://www.odcmp.com/Photos/05/Viale_Range/index.htm, for photos of the completed pits and Rededication Ceremony visit http://www.odcmp.com/Photos/06/Viale_Range/index.htm.

The reconstructed Viale Pits got plenty of use during highpower week at the National Matches. The hundred year old pits were completely rebuilt and new target frames were installed.

A M1 Carbine Match Makes Nice Addition to CMP Games

By Sommer Wood, CMP Writer/Editor

Participation reached an all-time high this year in the CMP John C. Garand, Springfi eld and Vintage Military Rifl e Matches. The addition of the M1 Car-bine Match was also well received with high partici-pation and is expected to grow in the years to come. The Garand, Springfi eld and Vintage Matches had a combined 2369 shooters, up 327 competitors from last year. The new M1 Carbine Match brought in an additional 479 competitors, believed to be the larg-est assembly of Carbine rifl es on one range since the Korean War.

The M1 Carbine Match was certainly the talk of Camp Perry as it kicked off the CMP Games at the National Matches. The course of fi re was similar to the John C. Garand Match with the addition of a rapid fi re sitting stage that followed rapid fi re prone. The Match was fi red from the 200 yard line at a set of reduced targets placed on target frames 100 yards downrange. This was the fi rst time in over 50 years that an M1 Carbine Match was fi red at Camp Perry, and participation was more than double what was expected.

After the announcement that the M1 Carbine Match would be added the National Match schedule, the Carbine Club, a national organization of Carbine collectors, offered to provide an M1 Carbine Trophy to be added to the National Matches Trophy collec-tion at Camp Perry. The Carbine Club designated Larry Routh, a nationally recognized expert on Car-bines, to represent them in making the fi rst presenta-tion of the M1 Carbine Trophy.

The fi rst recipient of the M1 Carbine Trophy was Daniel Hinton of Berlin, WI with a score of 368-7X. “The best part of the match for me was the chance to shoot it with my Dad. It really was a great match for everyone,” said Hinton. It was certainly a match for all ages with competitors ranging from age 11 and up.

Next on the National Match schedule were the Springfi eld and Vintage Military Rifl e Matches. In these matches, competitors can elect to fi re either a M1903 rifl e which places them in the Springfi eld category, or an “as-issued” manually-operated for-eign military rifl e which places them in the Vintage category. The Vintage Match saw the largest growth of any of the CMP Games events with 237 competi-tors, up from only 84 in 2005.

The winner of the Springfi eld Match was Sean Leighton of Mechanicsburg, PA with a score of 287-5X. The High Junior was Anthony Ressel of Torrington, CT with a score of 271-6X that placed him in 108th place overall. The High Junior Plaques for the CMP Games Matches were provided by the Camp Perry Retired Marines.

Jeffery Knop of Brighton, MI posted the highest score of all four of the 2006 CMP Games Matches with a 290-8X to win the Vintage Military Rifl e Match. Knop, a JROTC instructor from the Detroit area, shot a 6.5mm Swedish Mauser in the match. The High Junior of the match was Kevin Anevicius of Hilbert, WI who shot a 272-3X which placed him 28th overall.

The oldest event of the CMP Games is the John C. Garand Match which began in 1998 with only 330 shooters. This year the Match again saw record num-

bers with 1315 competitors. For the fi rst time in the history of the Match there was a tie for fi rst place. Because no rule had been set in place for breaking a tie beyond X count, it was decided that co-win-ners would be awarded. This year’s co-winners of the John C. Garand Match were Christopher Roberts of Charlotte, NC and Nicholson Perkins Jr. of Cor-dova, TN, both fi ring a score of 286-7X. They were both presented the John C. Garand Trophy which was donated to the National Matches Trophy collec-tion by the Garand Collectors Association in 2001. The High Junior for the Match was Robert Rice of Stillwater, MN with a score of 282-5X which placed him 11th overall.

For complete results from any of these Matches please visit CMP’s website at http://clubs.odcmp.com/cgi-bin/report_matchResult.cgi?matchID=1409, for photos from the events visit http://www.odcmp.com/Photos/05/Index.htm.

The M1 Carbine Trophy was donated to the National Trophy Collection by the Carbine Club, a national organization of Carbine collectors.

The 9th Annual John C. Garand Match drew record numbers with 1315 competitors. Attendance was high for all the CMP Games Events with record numbers for each match.

MG Greg Wayt, the Adjutant General, State of Ohio, and BG Matt Kambic, Ohio Assistant Adjutant General, Army, fi red in the 9th Annual John C. Garand Match. The Generals had the full experience that all other par-ticipants had, from shooting to scoring to pit duty.

Several competitors dressed in period military uniforms for the CMP Games Events. The helmet pictured here represents the famed E Company, Army Air-Bourne Unit from WWII.

M1s for Vets Project Brings Veterans to Camp Perry

On 4 and 5 August 2006, seven recipients of the M1s for Vets Project participated in the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s Spring-fi eld and John C. Garand Matches at Camp Perry, Ohio. This trip was made possible with donations from the Walter Reed Society, Lake Norman High Power Club, and small dona-tions from many fellow competitors and M1 collectors throughout the country. The M1s for Vets Project is designed to present injured Iraq War veterans M1 Garand rifl es. Some 40 rifl es have been presented since December 2005, and 11 more are being made ready for presentation. All rifl es were either donated or purchased with donated funds.

Our group arrived on 3 August and quickly made a visit to the CMP North Store. Within a few minutes, two or three rifl es were picked, tagged and purchased. These guys were like kids in a candy store. Our next objective was commercial row, where important necessities were found and bought. We then headed over to Port Clinton for a wonderful dinner at the Crows Nest.

On Friday, the day promised some fi ne weather as we headed over to the Viale Range for the Springfi eld and Vintage Military Rifl e Matches. Our group took positions and pre-pared for making these old bolt action rifl es hit black. Members of the Lake Norman High Power Club from North Carolina assisted in coaching and spotting for our guys. Every-one tightened their slings and put their thirty rounds down range. Almost everyone was in the hunt for a medal with one veteran earning bronze. All shot extremely well, and all came away with a smile. Volunteer target pullers were found to help out in the pits, and a fi ne day of shooting was had by all.

The anticipation of Saturday’s John C. Ga-rand match was the topic of conversation as

the group again visited the Crows Nest Fri-day night. Something about that perch and ribs made the decision to return to the restau-rant easy, and another great meal was enjoyed with friends!

Saturday we arrived at the Rodriguez Range around 1100 hrs to prepare our equip-ment and minds to compete in the John C. Garand Match. Every one of our guys would now have a chance to shoot the rifl e that they received from the M1s for Vets Project. The members of Lake Norman High Power Club again assisted in coaching, spotting and scor-ing for our guys. Brian, Jason, Chad, Chris, Noah, Neil and Dave shot their sighters and all thirty rounds as their targets were pulled by volunteers from all over the country. We fi nished up with a few medals and everyone a winner.

At the awards banquet and closing cere-monies Saturday evening, the guys enjoyed a few beers and chow with fellow competitors. As we sat and talked about the day, the topic quickly turned to next year. In 2007 we will return and do it again, only better!

A special thanks needs to go to the people that made this happen: ! Barry Yankosek and Dan Babit for their

assistance and fi ne shooting! ! The Civilian Marksmanship Program and

Shannon Hand ! The Ohio National Guard ! The Walter Reed Society and Team

WRAMC ! The Lake Norman High Power Club, Cor-

nelius, NC

! John Weller Slings ! Springfi eld Armory ! Operation Second Chance www.operationsecondchance.org ! All those that donated funds and time to

make this possible. If you wish to make a contribution to the

Recipients of the M1s for Vets Project shot in both the Springfi eld and John C. Garand Matches at the 2006 Na-tional Matches. All shot M1 Garands that they received from donations given to the organization.

The group came to Camp Perry as Team WRAMC, from Walter Reed Army Medical Center where many are still under going therapy for injuries they received in Iraq.

5th CMP Rimfi re Sporter Match is Biggest So Far

24

The CMP Rimfi re Sporter Match that took place at Camp Perry, Ohio on Sunday, 23 July, had the largest attendance of any of the CMP Rimfi re Sporter events conducted since this unique championship started fi ve years ago. The 2006 Rimfi re Sporter compe-tition had 212 event entries, up from 180 in 2005. After suffering rainy and windy weath-er in 2005 and 2004, this year’s match was blessed with glorious Camp Perry weather.

Rimfi re Sporter is an informal, recre-ation-oriented competition shot with sport-er-type .22 cal. rimfi re rifl es that cannot weigh more than 7.5 pounds and must have at least a three-pound trigger pull. There are two classes of competition, an “O” class for open-sighted rifl es and a “T” class for rifl es equipped with telescopic sights (max. 6X).

The Rimfi re Sporter Match began with a clinic on Saturday afternoon that was taught by the Chief Range Offi cer Duane Tall-man and Gary Anderson, CMP Director. The match was fi red on Camp Perry’s Viale Range. Four relays of fi rers fi lled the cov-ered 60-point range to capacity. The match has become something of a holiday for CMP staff members who work the match in jobs that include registration, rifl e inspections, scoring and at the end of the day cooking a barbecue for all competitors.

The day concluded with an awards cere-mony where the top scorers were recognized along with all of the competitors who fi red gold, silver or bronze achievement medal scores in the O and T classes. Altogether, 45 O-class competitors went home with new gold, silver and bronze achievement medals while 65 T-class competitors earned med-als.

Top O-class scorer for the day was Mi-chael Craycraft from Beaverton, Michigan with a 575 total. The top O-Class junior was Eric Curavo from Northwood, Ohio who fi red a 552 total.

The contest for the top T-class shooter was extremely close between last year’s winner, Ron Springsteen, from Otsego, Michigan and Chad Cleland, from Swanton, Ohio, who had the high score in 2003. This time Cleland ended up on top with a 591 total. Springsteen had a 590. The top junior was Lucas Boord from New Stanton, Pennsylva-nia with a 588.

Complete results for the Rimfi re Sporter Match are posted on the CMP web site at http://clubs.odcmp.com/cgi-bin/report_matchResult.cgi?matchID=1448 and pic-tures can be viewed at http://www.odcmp.com/Photos/06/Rimfi re/index.htm. Anyone interested in learning more about Rimfi re Sporter is invited to check out the CMP Guide to Rimfi re Sporter that can be down-loaded from the CMP web site at http://www.odcmp.com/Competitions/rimfi re.pdf.

The only equipment needed to compete in Rimfi re Sporter is a sporter-class .22 cal. rimfi re rifl e, a sling, ordinary glove, shooting mat, scope and ammo. Nothing else is required to be competitive.

The top junior in the O-class was Eric Curavo from Northwood, Ohio. Presenting the plaque award is Mar-sha Beasley, a member of the CMP Board of Direc-tors.

Rimfi re sporter attracts lots of juniors who are able to compete successfully with a variety of lever, bolt, pump and semi-auto rifl es.

Chad Cleland, New Swanton, Ohio, had the top T-class score with a 591 total.

By Gary Anderson, DCM

CMP staff members cooked brats and hot dogs for all competitors at the end of the match.

The 5th National Rimfi re Sporter Match took place on a temporary 60-fi ring point covered range that was set up by CMP staff. The benches between the targets and fi ring line are for standing position fi ring at 25 yards. Prone and sitting position fi ring was done under the cover at 50 yards distance.
