EPC 420 Jeffries Sample Adult Interview Protocol Below is a previous EPC 420 student’s adult interview protocol. It is not meant to be seen as an example of an excellent protocol, instead it is meant to give you a starting point for creating your own protocol. Your goal is to gather information on the topic areas listed in the Assignment 1 instructions from the perspective of an adult who knows the adolescent. Remember that the format of an interview protocol can range from a general outline of topics to a detailed, sequenced list of questions and statements. This sample is a detailed type of interview protocol, while the topic list in your Assignment 1 instructions is an example of a simpler outline format. Introduction to the Interview I’m completing a project for a course in educational psychology. I’m studying the types of things that affect how teen’s learn. I’m also interested in learning about the types of things that interest and concern teenagers in general, and how these things affect a teenager’s attitude towards school and performance in school. I’ll be taking some notes on what you tell me and will be writing up a report on our conversation that I’ll hand in to my professor. I won’t use your real name in my report. I’ll also be talking to [teen’s name] about the same things I talk to you about, but I won’t tell him/her anything we discuss. Interview Questions Ok, now I’m going to ask you a number of questions about topics I have been asked to cover in my report that you haven’t already told me about. These mostly have to do with school and family and friends. If I ask you about anything that you don’t feel like talking about, just let me know. Also if you want to take a break at some point, let me know. (Education History) Let’s talk about the teen’s education. What school does he/she attend? What schools has the teen attended? What classes is the teen taking? How is the teen doing in each class? How does the teen seem to get along with teachers? Other students? Does s/he seem to have any learning difficulties? What do you think were his/her strengths? weaknesses? Favorite subjects? Why? Least favorite subjects? Why? How is s/he doing in school now? What grades has/is the teen earning? Is doing well in school important to him/her?
