Forest Heights! It definitely felt like a small world, but it was good to hear that people are reading and enjoying our publica-tion…even outside of Forest Heights.

Lastly, thank you to our residents and sponsors who have attended our magazine events this past couple of months: res-taurant reviews, free massages, wine tour. I hope you had as much fun as we have had, and we look forward to seeing some of you at another event in the near future, as well as some new faces. Our next event will be an exclusive Forest Heights Free Hair Makeover Event on Wednesday, August 24th, at ChaChi Hair & Skin in the Pearl District. Please call or email us to RSVP. If you are hosting or promoting an event in Portland or in the neighborhood, we are more than happy to publish the event photos and, in some cases, help sponsor and promote. We can also publish the event in the monthly calendar of events. It’s first come first serve, and some months there may be a queue, so send your content in early!

Here’s to a fun-filled August & continu-ous sunny weather in our beautiful city of Portland!

NotePublisher’s

Dear Forest Heights Life Readers,

Welcome to our August issue! We have received some great submissions from residents this past month, keep them com-ing! August is by far one of my favorite months of the year in Oregon because of the long daylight hours and warm summer nights outside spent with friends and family. I hope all of you have made some great summer memories so far…whether it be spending time at your kid’s baseball game, on vacation, or at a backyard BBQ with your neighbors over wine. If you would like to share some of your summer vacation photos or stories or travel advice, feel free to contact us so we can publish them in an upcoming issue. They may inspire more of your neighbors to finally take time for themselves and plan an adventure of their own!

Travel is a big passion of mine as well as for everyone on our staff. To me, the experience of being in a new city or culture is thrilling because around every corner is a new discovery, a new piece of beauty, maybe even a new life-long friend. That allows me to continually learn and embrace the world for all of our uniquedifferencesandbeauty.Sometimes, though, travelingtoanew country really makes us gain more love for our own country and the simple things that we take for granted. This past April, a couple dozen of us with our company, N2 Publishing, traveled toPlayaHerradura,CostaRicaforarelaxing, tropicalvacation.StayingatourresortwasafamilyofPortlanderswhoworkatIntel and live in the neighborhood next door to Forest Heights. They also have seen our magazine from a friend who lives in

They say location is everything, and that provedtruefortheMcGuires.Itbecameincreasingly more important to move closertoworkforChris, whoisDirectorofSportsMarketingforAdidasinNorthPortland. Tracy is a stay-at-home mom, part-time fitness instructor and avid runner, so the close proximity to Forest Park trails was another big attraction. With small kids, they wanted to find an area with outstanding schools and long-term options for both public and private education. Their children were attending early education schools in Lake Oswego, and the standards were high, but the criteria was met with several options in close proximity to Forest Heights. In

addition to location, they appreciated the tight knit community within For-est Heights, and they look forward to becoming more involved in the years ahead. The walk-ability of Forest Heights isalsoabonuswithstoreslikeStarbucksandSweetAmbrosiabeingsoaccessible.MillPondParkisnotonlybeautiful, butprovides countless hours of fun to Logan and Quinn. The low crime rate and safety of the area were also large factors. Overall, they could not be happier with the move to Forest Heights, and they are really looking forward to many happy years here, raising their two young kids and growing within the community.

After nearly a year and a half of walking with a painful limp due to a meniscectomy on my right knee, I'd had enough. I called Bobbi, and we discussed my situation at my home. After three personal training sessions, I noticed that I no longer walked with pain, and after 10 sessions I am walking normally. Bobbi assessed my training needs to a “T,” combining both her knowl-edge of corrective exercise while incorporating the strengthen-ing and especially the stretching exercises that gave me the results I didn't dare dream of ever achieving again.

What can and should you do?  Turn on all the lights, turn on some soft music, keep the heat on, remove pets when possible, and head to the nearest coffee shop with a good book.  A good agent will have given you advice on the preparation of your home for marketing.  Trust your agent—allow them to do what they were hired to do, and the results will speak for themselves.

For more information about preparing your home for sale, enlist the help of a reputable real estate agent.  Never hesitate to call! As always, a reputable real estate agent can guide you in these and other matters—so don’t hesitate to call and ask!

Q: I really hate having people come through my home. Can I be present while showings take place?

A: Of course you can—that is your prerogative.  But is that a good idea?  Probably not.  The goal of appealing

to buyers is to have them feel as comfortable in your home as they would in their own.  When an owner is present, buyers are less relaxed and tend to feel as if they are trespassing—exactly the opposite of what your goal is!  They will feel as if they can’t discuss the home freely with their agent and may rush through theshowing. Youmightaswellhavenotshownthehouseatall.  And the biggest mistake?  Following buyer through your home explaining all the touches that make the house yours.  Youmayloveyournewlyremodeledkitchen, butperhapsalarge

West Hills based roofing and general contractingCompany,KeithGreenCon-struction has been in business since 1995 and is our feature sponsor spotlight of the month. The bulk of their business resides in roofing, equaling out to be about 85% of their work. This averages out to be about 300 roofing projects a year, rang-ing from simple repairs, to new builds, to roofing replacement re-installation. To the benefit of Forest Heights residents, KeithGreenConstructionistheexclu-sive distributor in the area that installs an eco-friendly roofing product that is already pre-approved by the Forest Heights Homeowner’s Association build-

As your greatest and most personal investment, it’s important to protect your home from the elements, and the roof of your home is of primary importance in that consideration. In today’s envi-ronmentally conscious world, recycled building materials are also of primary importance. But going green with your home doesn’t mean sacrificing qual-ity, aesthetics, and affordability. As an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional roofing systems, Euroshield™ covers your home in style while reducing

your carbon footprint. This roofing sys-tem has as much to offer in function and durability as it offers beauty.

Euroshield™ roofing products were cre-ated 10 years ago with the goal of divert-ing and recycling the tremendous deluge of used tires ultimately destined for the landfill.Yearsofresearchanddevelop-ment led to the creation of a unique formula, containing over 75% recycled materials, for the production of the finest synthetic rubber roofing products avail-able on the market today. The design is sleek and contemporary with cool blue painted walls and a dark, painted, exposed ceiling modernizing the interior and opening up what might normally be considered as a narrow space. along every wall, literally every seat in the house is a great loca-tion for watching the game.

When devastating events occur such as the recent earthquake and tsunami that severely damaged large portions of Japan, charities tend to step up their solicitations for funding. It makes sense. When tragedy strikes, our awareness and our empathy level tend to rise, and we’re in more of a mood to give gener-ously to worthwhile causes. It is good to provide help to people in need, but it is also prudent to make certain you are giving to the most effective organizations that can really make a differ-ence with your money.

Just as you may be careful about how you spend money on con-sumer goods, food items and leisure time activities, you should approach charitable giving in the same way. Here are some tips to keep in mind as you consider your charitable giving options:

• Checkoutthecharityfirst, ifyoucan–as despicable as it sounds, when disasters such as an earthquake or flood occur, scam organizations with little or no charitable purpose have been known to spring up trying to collect money from unsus-pecting donors. To avoid falling prey to these swindlers, give to organizations that you know and trust or that you can investi-gate before giving. It is easy to identify the largest organiza-tions, but there are many others not as well known that deserve our help. To be sure you are doing the right thing, verify the legitimacy and effectiveness of charities through websites such as Charity Navigator (www.charitynavigator.org) and the Better BusinessBureau(www.bbb.org/charity).

• Don’tgiveoutpersonalinformationtophoneoremailsolicitors–phone solicitors will ask you to provide credit card information and sometimes even bank account information. This should be avoided. If you are convinced you want to make a donation to that specific charity, ask for a website that will

allow you to do so online through a secure server. Also, do not send credit card or bank account information via email if you receive an email solicitation. The reason for the caution with both phone and email solicitations is that scammers do have the ability to impersonate a legitimate organization as a way to steal personal information. This is most prevalent in the wake of a disaster. According to the FBI, 4,000 bogus charitable sites were identified in the wake of the earthquake in Haiti in 2010.

• Realizethatmoneyisthemostvaluablegift–what organi-zations need more than anything else is cash to help them do their work. In some situations, individuals donate clothing or other items, but this can be cumbersome for the organization to manage and is not always suited to the purposes they are trying to achieve. Except when they specify differently, organizations prefer to receive money as it helps them manage their efforts most effectively.

• Thinkaboutwhetheryouwanttodesignateapurposeforyourcash– in the wake of certain tragedies, many donors are willing to give money to a charity if they know the dollars will be used specifically to assist in recovery efforts related to that event. This is fine, but if you believe in the broad work done by the organization, they may prefer that the money not be limited to a specific purpose in order to help them better utilize their resources for their overall efforts.

ThinkgloballyandlocallyOur giving instincts naturally rise with well-publicized events like9/11,hurricanes,andearthquakes.Buthelpfulcausesexistthroughout the year. Be careful not to put all of your eggs in the basket of only the most visible charities in the wake of major crises. Try to share a portion of your own good fortune with others in need throughout the year.

Startbylookinginyourowncommunityfororganizationsthat are making a difference. Talk to friends and colleagues for recommendations. On a global scale, consider causes that appeal to you and use the websites listed above (Charity Navi-gator, Better Business Bureau) to determine their legitimacy and effectiveness.

Youwantanydollarsyougivetomakeasmuchofadiffer-ence as possible. Being diligent about checking out charities in advance will make you feel better and probably boost your desire to give more in the future.

Ever wish that you could have a pro-fessional massage on a regular basis to unwind from a stressful day at work or runningafterthelittleones?Maybeevenhaving one on a weekly basis for pain, but are afraid of racking up enormous fees at the spa? Today, more and more people turn to massage therapy not just to relieve stress but also to heal aches and pains, including symptoms associated with arthritis and fibromyalgia, so the demand for affordable, accessible massage therapy has become greater than ever before. That fact is one of the reasons that has made

ForestHeightsResidents

MassageEnvyoneofthefastedgrowingfranchises in the nation, as well as their commitment to giving excellent service for healing their clients at prices they can afford.

MassageEnvyisnottryingtobeaspa, but it does have a relaxing and serene environment and offers low-cost plans that make multiple massages in a month very reasonable. A membership includes memberships at all locations nationwide, which now is up to 680 locations in 43 states. A client can use his or her “pre-

paid” massages at any nationwide clinic or pay the membership rate in that par-ticular state.  The regional member rate is $39 per hour or $57 per 90 minutes. The regional monthly dues are only $49, which includes a 1 hour massage.  All additional massages are at the member rates.

So,howdoesMassageEnvymeasureupto residents who have had many other professional massage therapy treatments in the past? We asked Forest Heights Residentstogiveourmagazinesponsor,

theCedarHillsMassageEnvy, atryforthe first time and give us some honest feedback.

F.H.ResidentLauraCroll,whoattendedwith her recent high school graduate daughterandhadaSwedishmassage, stated that her overall impression was that “The receptionists were very pleasant, and the massage therapist was very kind andpatient.Mostimportantlyevery-thing was very clean. I definitely recom-mend this to other residents; I find it to be an incredible value and will return”

Lilah Ivanov, who tried the full body massage for the first time, felt that the staff was knowledgeable, warm & profes-sional. “I left there with a smile and it is somethingIplanondoingagain.Mostdefinitely worth it.”Laura enjoyed attending this event with her daughter so they could spend some quality time together to celebrate her

graduation. We think taking the time out to unwind and relax with friends or fam-ily is important, and what a better place to start that process than to go to get a massage!

Our other resident participants also gave rave reviews: “MyexperienceatMassageEnvy-CedarMillswasapositiveone;themasseusewas attentive to my problem areas and worked on some issues I was having with my upper back. I felt great when I left there and wondered why I did not do this formyselfmoreoften.Shealsodidmywhole body, including feet, which was awesome!MywifeandIwilldefinitelygo back there; the price was so great, and the experience was a good one.” -Jay McAlonen

And, finally, Bobbi McAlonen, a per-sonaltrainer,stated,“MymassageatMassageEnvywasveryrelaxingandpro-

fessional; I had been having some neck issues, and the masseuse did a great job getting to some deep knots. I think for the price and convenience I will do this a lot more often; in fact, I am taking one of my clients there this week. I am look-ing forward to another relaxing hour of affordable pampering.” Although all of our participants may enjoy going to full service spas every once in awhile and indulging themselves, they all found the value and professional mas-sage techniques displayed by the staff at the Cedar Hills massage worthy of refer-ring to other residents as well, especially those who need frequent massages due to injuries, and residents who travel a lot for work can take advantage of the nation-wide membership plan.

Save Your BackIf possible, place shoes at or near eye level. That way you won’t have to bend down every time.

Avoid the ShadowsIf the closet has an overhead light, place narrower items like pants on the top rod and wider items like shirts and suits below. This will cut down on blind spots caused by shadows.

Light It UpIf you don’t have a light in the closet, add one.

Aim HigherThe space above the top shelf is almost always filled with empti-ness. Add another shelf for little-used items, and then keep a step stool in the closet if necessary to access the high shelf.
