HEAD COACH SCOTT JOHANNSENScott Johannsen will begin his sixth year as the head coach of both the men and women’s swim teams at Augustana for the 2013-14 school year. Johannsen put together a solid first five years in charge of both programs.

During the 2012-13 season, he led the Augustana men to a 5-1 dual meet record and a fourth place finish in the College Conference of Illinois & Wiscon-sin. At the CCIW Championships, junior

Justin Reppy brought home the individual title in both the 200 and 500 meter freestyles in school record times. In total, the Vikings broke eight school records throughout the season. Johannsen has been named the CCIW male “Coach of the Year” twice during his tenure and the Augustana men have set new school records in 9 of 14 events.

He also led the Augustana women to a 3-3 dual meet record and a fourth place finish in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin. At the CCIW Championships, junior Helen Myers claimed the one and three-meter diving titles for the third straight year. During Johannsen’s reign, the Au-gustana women have rewrote the record books in 8 of 14 events.

I believe that Scott has the expertise and passion to be a difference-maker for the future growth of swimming at Augustana. Scott is a Quad Cities native and a well-known commodity in the regional swimming community.”

Johannsen had been the head coach of the Pleasant Valley Stingrays Swim Club from September of 2006. He was responsible for a club that had 150 swimmers. He is also the owner/manager of the Samax Corporation since 1994.

He was a standout swimmer at Davenport West High School where he became the first four year varsity letter winner in school history. He was a three time first team all-state performer in the 100 butterfly and held the school record in that event until 1996. He attended Western Illinois on a swimming scholarship and served as captain of the team. He was a two time finalist in the 100 butterfly in the Mid Continent Conference.

Prior to coaching the Stingrays, he was also the head coach of the Rock Island YMCA club team from 1987 through 1990.

He has been active in various youth programs throughout the Quad Cities and has served as the president of the Davenport Knights of Columbus and the John F. Kennedy Athletic Club. He was the vice president of the Kimberly Village Homeowner’s Association in 2000-01.

2013-14 SWIMMING & DIVING - 5

Vikings finish fourth at CCIW Championships; 3-3 in dual competition; Helen Myers claims third straight CCIW diving double; seven school-records fall

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – For the third straight season, Augustana junior Helen Myers (Pecatonica HS, Rock City, Ill.) won both the one and three-meter diving titles at this year’s CCIW Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships. Myers’ performance helped Coach Scott Johannsen’s Vikings take fourth place in the team standings. The team went 3-3 in dual meets in 2012-13 and broke seven school records, five of which involved junior Hillary Ferguson (Waubonsie Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.).

Ferguson broke individual school records in the 50 (:24.02) and 100 (:52.82) freestyles and swam on three record-setting relays. She teamed with seniors Molly Clennon (Benet Academy, Naperville, Ill.) and Alexandra Piper (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) and freshman Emma Novak (Eden Prairie HS, Eden Prairie, Minn.) to take down Augustana records in the 400 (3:37.18) and 800 (8:02.21) freestyle relays.

In the 200 medley relay, Clennon led off and Ferguson anchored, joining sophomore Jamie Graf (Lincoln-Way Central HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) and senior Emma Regnier (Grayslake North HS, Lake Villa, Ill.) to post a school record 1:50.53. Clennon and Graf set new individual records as well. Clennon swam a 5:16.45 in the 500 free-style and Graf’s 2:16.29 in the 200 butterfly is also best in school history.

Behind a win by Myers in the one-meter diving competition, the Vi-kings opened the 2012-13 season by finishing second of three teams at Illinois Wesleyan’s Halloween Invitational. The 3x100 breaststroke relay team of Regnier, freshman Jordan Johnson (Appleton North HS, Appleton, Ill.) and senior Emily Timmons (West Aurora HS, North Aurora, Ill.) was also a winner. In addition, Augustana picked up wins in the 500 freestyle relay (Piper, Ferguson, Clennon, Novak) and 3x100 medley relay (Regnier, Timmons, Novak).

The home schedule started off with a 159-77 dual-meet win over Monmouth at Carver Pool and then the Vikings headed back to Bloomington, Illinois for the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational. Myers won both diving events to help Augustana finish third in a six-team field.

Johannsen’s squad followed that up with a fourth-place finish at Grinnell’s 11-team Pioneer Classic and then returned to Carver and closed out the 2012 portion of its schedule with a 143-96 dual win over Loras.

2013 began with a 182-53 win over Coe in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Vikings dropped a dual to Luther 146-97 at home before competing in the 11-team Grinnell Invitational, where they finished seventh. A pair of close dual losses to Monmouth (68-62) and Division I West-ern Illinois (70-60) preceded the CCIW Championships.

Several 2012-13 individual performances earned spots on the school’s all-time top ten lists. In addition to her 50 and 100 freestyle records, Ferguson’s 200 freestyle best of 1:57.72 now ranks third at Augustana. Clennon’s 200 (1:57.67) and 100 (:54.48) freestyle bests rank second and fifth, respectively, to go along with her 500 free-style record. Graf added a 1:08.99 in the 100 breaststroke (third at Augustana) to her record in the 200 breaststroke. Novak, Timmons and Hollyann Kabbe (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) also carved out top ten bests this year. Novak’s 11:21.07 in the 1000 freestyle ranks fourth, Timmons’ 18:56.07 in the 1650 freestyle is sixth and Kabbe ranks 10th with a best of 1:04.95 in the 100 backstroke.

Viking men finish 5-1 in dual meets and fourth at CCIW Championships; Justin Reppy a double con-ference champion; five individual and three relay school records fall

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – After three straight fifth-place finishes at the CCIW Swimming & Diving Championships, Coach Scott Johannsen’s men’s team jumped a spot to fourth in the league this year. Junior Justin Reppy (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) led the way, winning both the 200 (1:42.75) and 500 (4:35.27) freestyles in school-record times. He joined sophomores Aaron Holt (Mt. Vernon HS, Mt. Vernon, Ill.) and Josh Wielenga (School of Environmental Studies, Apple Valley, Minn.) and freshman David Sommers (Westlake HS, Thousand Oaks, Calif.) in earning all-conference honors. Reppy’s were just two of five individual Augustana standards that were surpassed this season. This year’s Vikings also took down three relay records on their way to a 5-1 dual-meet mark and the championship at Illinois Wesleyan’s Halloween Invitational.

Reppy also set a school record with a 9:45.23 in the 1000 freestyle and swam on two of the three record-setting relays. He teamed with Holt, sophomore Michael Duy (Marmion Academy, Aurora, Ill.) and junior Daniel Hinck (Harlem HS, Loves Park, Ill.) to set an Augustana standard with a 3:11.28 in the 400 freestyle relay. In addition, he an-chored the school-record 800 freestyle relay (7:00.56), joining Hinck, Duy and Sommers.

Holt, in the 100 backstroke (:52.05) and Sommers, in the 200 but-terfly (1:53.26), broke individual school marks as well. The pair also joined Hinck and freshman Felipe Hernandez (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) on the record-setting 200 medley relay which logged a time of 1:36.16.

The 2012-13 season opened with a win at Illinois Wesleyan’s three-team Halloween Invitational. The Vikings bested the hosts and Millikin behind individual wins by Wielenga (one-meter diving), Hinck (200 freestyle), Sommers (200 butterfly), Fernandez (200 backstroke) and Duy (500 freestyle), as well as six relay wins.

A 162-63 dual meet victory over Monmouth was followed by at trip back to Illinois Wesleyan for the IWU Invitational. Holt won the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke and Hinck claimed the 200 freestyle, but the Vikings were edged out for the team title by Washington Univer-sity. Augustana compiled 134 points, just one behind the Bears and well ahead of third-place IWU’s 71.

Holt picked up a win in the 100 backstroke as the Vikings finished third among 10 teams at Grinnell’s Pioneer Classic.

Augustana closed the 2012 portion of its schedule with a 158-73 dual meet win over Loras at Carver Pool and opened 2013 by beating Coe (183-29) on the road and Luther (139-84) at home.

Then, it was back to Iowa for the seven-team Grinnell Invitational. The Vikings finished third, behind powerful Grinnell and Gustavus Adolphus units. Holt (100 butterfly) and Reppy (1650 freestyle) claimed individual wins for Johannsen’s crew.

A pair of dual competitions in Monmouth, Illinois preceded the CCIW meet. The Vikings defeated Monmouth 90-39, but suffered their only dual loss of the season, 76-51 to Division I Western Illinois.

Nine Vikings recorded top ten performances in a total of 19 events this year. In addition to his three new school records, Reppy now ranks seventh in school history with a 100 butterfly best of :53.30. Along with his 100 backstroke record, Holt moved to second with a :21.49 in the 50 freestyle and third with a :47.43 in the 100 free-style. Sommers and Fernandez each cracked three top ten’s as well. Sommers now ranks second in both the 500 freestyle (4:45.03) and 100 butterfly (:50.99) in addition to his school-record 200 butterfly. Fernandez is fourth in the 200 backstroke (1:58.94) and ninth in both the 100 backstroke (:55.83) and 200 individual medley (2:01.33).

Freshmen Kyle Johnson (Shadow Mountain HS, Phoenix, Ariz.) and Adam Bernardi (Boylan Catholic HS, Belvidere, Ill.) delivered top ten performances in two events each. Johnson in the 100 (5th at :54.68) and 200 (8th at 2:01.20) backstrokes and Bernardi in the 200 (2:00.56) and 400 (4:19.50) individual medleys. Senior Christopher Greaves (Morris HS, Morris, Ill.) swam a 2:00.85 200 backstroke (6th). Duy now ranks third with a 4:45.23 in the 500 freestyle and Hinck’s :21.91 in the 50 freestyle ranks seventh.

2013-14 SWIMMING & DIVING - 7

2013-14 SWIMMING PREVIEW

Augustana men and women prepare for successful 2013-14 season

MEN’S EVENT BREAKDOWN

FREESTYLE – Junior Aaron Holt (Mount Vernon HS, Mount Vernon, Ill.) had the best time on the team in the 50 freestyle last year and has the second fastest in school history (:21.49). He also owns the third fastest time ever in the 100 freestyle at :47.43. He will be joined in the sprints by sophomore Felipe Hernandez (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) and junior Timothy Michaels (Pella Community HS, Pella, Iowa).

The middle distance events belong to senior Justin Reppy (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.), a multiple-time CCIW champion who last year set school records in the 200, 500 and 1000 freestyle events. Senior Daniel Hinck (Harlem HS, Loves Park, Ill.) swam the seventh fast 50 freestyle on the team last year and he had a time of :48.17 in the 100 freestyle. Junior Michael Duy (Marmion Academy, Aurora, Ill.) will also be used in the freestyle events. Freshman Timothy Durning (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) will handled the distance freestyle.

BREASTSTROKE – Three freshmen will step in here and make the Vikings much stronger than they have been. Ian Disteldorf (Brother Rice HS, Oak Forest, Ill.), Bryce Dibadj (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn, Ill.) and Robert Chaney (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) will give Augustana some points here that were missing in the past.

BUTTERFLY – Sophomore David Sommers (Westlake HS, Thousand Oaks, Calif.) is the school record holder in the 200 butterfly and has the second fastest time in school history in the 100. Holt is the school record holder in the 100 butterfly. Junior Alexander Putz (Oak Forest HS, Oak Forest, Ill.) will contribute here as well.

BACKSTROKE – This is a very deep event with Holt, the school record holder in the 100 backstroke, and Hernandez, who is in the top 10 in both the 100 and 200 backstroke, leading the way. Sophomore Kyle Johnson (Shadow Mountain HS, Phoenix, Ariz.) and sophomore Austin Small (Mor-ris HS, Morris, Ill.) make this a huge strength for the Vikings this season.

INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY – Holt, sophomore Adam Bernardi (Rockford Boylan Catholic HS, Belvidere, Ill.) and Hernandez will be the top point getters in this event. Bernardi has the second fastest time in Augustana history in the 400 and the fourth best in the 200. Hernandez is ninth best in the 200 IM.

DIVING – Junior Josh Wielenga (School Environmental Study, Apple Val-ley, Minn.) was third in both the one and three meter events last year in the CCIW meet.

WOMEN’S EVENT BREAKDOWN

FREESTYLE – Senior Hillary Ferguson (Waubonsie Valley HS, Naperville,

Ill.) is the school record holder in both the 50 and 100 freestyle events

and she also holds the third best time in Augustana history in the 200

freestyle. She will lead the sprint corps. Junior Jamie Graf (Lincoln-Way

Central HS, Downers Grove, Ill.), the school record holder in the 200

breaststroke, will also be used here. In the mid-distance freestyle events

Ferguson will be a force along with freshman Michelle Johnson (Lockport

HS, Homer Glen, Ill.) and senior Erin Doty (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.).

Johnson and Doty will also bump up to the longer distances and will be

joined by senior Katie Pittman (Mahomet-Seymour HS, Mahomet, Ill.).

BREASTSTROKE – Junior Jamie Graf (Lincoln-Way Central HS, Downers

Grove, Ill.) is the current record holder in the 200 breaststroke and has

the third fastest time in school history in the 100. Freshman Emma Shie

(Davenport Central HS, Davenport, Iowa) will be an immediate contributor

in this event.

BUTTERFLY – Sophomore Emma Novak (Eden Prairie HS, Eden Prairie,

Minn.) had a tremendous freshman season and she will be a force here.

Shie and fellow freshman Allison Patch (Moline HS, Coal Valley, Ill.) make

this a big-point event for the Vikings.

BACKSTROKE – Patch and junior Laura Pemberton (Fremont HS, Fremont,

Neb.) will handle the backstroke duites.

INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY – Novak is in the top-10 on the school’s all-time list

in both the 200 and 400 individual medley (3rd in the 400 and 5th in the

200) and she will be joined by Patch and Novak in what Johannsen figures

is another big point event for his team.

DIVING – Senior Helen Myers (Pecatonica HS, Rock City, Ill.) is the

three-time defending CCIW champion in both the one and three meter

diving events. Sophomore Adelia Clark (Linn Mar HS, Marion, Iowa) was

an all-conference performer last year and sophomore Megan McGregor

THE COLLEGE CONFERENCE OF ILLINOIS & WISCONSIN

Now in its 68th year, the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) enjoys a reputation as the “Best Small-College Conference in the Nation.” The league was formed with nine charter members (Augustana, Carthage, Elmhurst, Illinois College, Illinois Wesleyan, Lake Forest, Millikin, North Central and Wheaton) on April 26, 1946 in Jacksonville, Illinois. Competition opened in the 1946-47 academic year as the College Conference of Illinois.

Carthage left the conference in 1952 but returned in 1961. In 1967 the name was changed to the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin to recognize Car-thage, which had moved to Kenosha, Wisconsin from Carthage, Illinois in 1962, and Carroll, which entered the league in 1955.

As is often the case with athletic conferences, CCIW membership has experienced some changes since the league’s inception. After Carthage left in 1952, Illinois College withdrew the following year. Elmhurst and Wheaton left following the 1959-60 academic year. Wheaton rejoined for all sports but football in 1967 and then for football in 1970. Elmhurst rejoined in the fall of 1967 for all sports but football and for football in the 1968 season. Carroll joined officially with the 1955 spring sports seasons. Carthage returned in 1961 and North Park entered the following fall. Lake Forest dropped out at the end of the 1962-63 year. The last change in CCIW membership came following the 1991-92 season when Carroll withdrew.

Now eight members strong, the CCIW continues its tradition of athletic and academic excellence. The league sanctioned women’s sports for the first time in the 1986-87 school year and Augustana participated in the first ever women’s competition. That was on September 14, 1986 when the Vikings met North Cen-tral in a volleyball match that was held at Elmhurst College.

The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin sanc-tions 21 sports: baseball, men’s and women’s bas-ketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s indoor track & field, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, vol-leyball and wrestling.

The latest sports added at Augustana were men’s and women’s lacrosse and neither of those are sponsored by the CCIW.

Augustana owns more CCIW team championships than any other school in the league with 177 total. Of those 177, the men have won 137 and 40 belong to the women.

The CCIW began to award championships in men’s swimming & diving in 1947-48 and in women’s swim-ming & diving in 1986-87. Since that time the Vikings have won eight men’s titles and six women’s champi-onships.
