In Welsh, after a number, we have a singular noun. In English, we have plurals after numbers, Eg; 2 chairs 4
tables. In English we would say ‘3 brothers’, in Welsh we say ‘3
brawd’.The number 2, 3, and 4 change when discussing a feminine noun.
Therefore:
Dau
Tri
Pedwar
Dwy
Tair
Pedair
Mae tair chwaer ‘da fi - I have three sisters
The number ‘dau’ causes a soft mutation. Therefore:
Mae dau frawd ‘da fi - I have two brothers
When you are talking about yourself, eg, I/me this is called the 1st person. To talk about someone else, eg, he/she/Jac, this is called
the third person.
Mae …… ‘da fi – I have……
Mae …… ‘da fe – he has ……
Mae …… ‘da hi – she has ……
Mae …… ‘da Jac – Jac has ……
In welsh, to say somebody ‘has’ something, whether it’s a brother, sister, brown hair, or a Playstation, we use the same sentence structure.
