CARBON DIOXIDE (CO2)This gas is among those responsible for the greenhouse effect.

In the EU, around 12% of CO2 emissions can be traced back tocars (Communication from the EC, 7/2/2007, COM(2007), 19 final).

Thanks to the Voluntary Agreement signed in 1998, betweenmanufacturers and the European Commission, for the reductionof CO2 emissions, new cars sold in 2009 achieved 21% lower CO2

levels than those sold in 1995.Over this same period, Fiat reduced its emissions by 26%.

In 2008 the European Commission introduced new limits aimed atreaching average emissions levels of 130 g/km by 2015 throughtechnological improvements to cars.

A further reduction of 10 g/km will be achieved by adoptingcomplementary measures (ex: lowering fuel consumption in lightcommercial vehicles, increase in the use of bio-fuels and use ofgear shift indicators).

POLLUTING EMISSIONSDirectly affect air quality (ex: nitrogen oxides and particulates).

As part of environmental protection regulations, new standardsestablished by the European Union impose stricter limits onmaximum polluting emissions permitted from cars, defining futurecommitments for carmakers.

With the Euro 5 standard, objectives defined for particulates areso low they are near the threshold of measurability.

ENVIRONMENT - ORIENTED TECHNOLOGYSTART & STOP GSI - GEAR SHIFT INDICATOR NEW GENERATION TRANSMISSIONS

Standard on most of the range, the Start&Stop system temporarilyshuts down the engine and subsequently restarts it in typical urban trafficsituations and during stops at traffic signals.

This system guarantees a reduction in fuel consumption and emissionsup to 10% in the urban cycle and 3.5% in the New European DrivingCycle (NEDC).

Fiat is already designing second-generation Start&Stop systems, withmore advanced strategies for shutting down the engine, that will lead toaround a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions in urban use.The new generation will be introduced on models released over the nextfew years.

The Gear Shift Indicator is a genuine “co-pilot” that discreetlysuggests when to shift gear, leading to more efficient engine usein terms of consumption and CO2 emissions. The GSI will beintroduced on all Fiat models with a manual gearbox.

An Automated Manual Transmission (AMT), the Dualogic combinescomfort of use with reduction in fuel consumption and emissions.

In the AMT, gear selection and clutch activation are replaced byelectro-hydraulic components that act in place of the driver and arecontrolled by an electronic unit that guarantees proper gear shiftingin all driving conditions.

The Dualogic transmission can reduce CO2 emissions up to 10%in the urban cycle.

Methane, the cleanest fuelavailable now and the only realalternative to gasoline anddiesel:

In its Natural Power ecological line, Fiat proposes thebroadest range of dual fuel vehicles (gasoline/methane):13 models respond to the needs of different customers, including the professional sector.

Fiat and Fiat Powertrain Technologies have chosendual fuel solutions to combine the advantages ofmethane with gasoline’s ease of refueling, even in areaswhere methane distributors are less widespread.

Fiat strongly believes in methane’s potential as a keyfuel source for sustainable mobility. If general conditionsfavor its development, Fiat will continue to introducenew products on the market. This commitment is confirmed by the launch of theNew Doblò, available with the first methane turboengine in the range, guaranteeing high performancealong with reduced consumption and emissions.

guarantees minimum harmful emissions, from particulates (reduced close to zero)to aromatic compounds such as benzene

reduces the most critical emissions related toair quality (such as nitrogen oxides and themost reactive hydrocarbons that promote theformation of ozone)

reduces CO2 emissions by 23%compared to gasoline running

Fiat and FPT are investing major resources in developingtechnologies capable of exploiting available natural resources.

BIOFUELS

Further proof of Fiat’s advanced technology isTetraFuel the first engine in the world capable ofrunning on four different fuels: bioethanol, “gasolina”(Brazilian gasoline with 20% bioethanol), gasoline, and methane.

An interesting prospect for sustainable mobility in the short tomid-term is Biomethane, a renewable form of methane producedfrom biomass.

From a “well-to-wheel” standpoint, CO2 emissions from abiomethane-vehicle are comparable to those from an electricvehicle by renewable sources.

The European Commission Communication on “Clean and Energy-Efficient Vehicles” has also confirmed biomethane’s ecologicalvalue by recognizing its role in the European strategy for thedevelopment and distribution of vehicles that are clean andenergy-efficient in terms of CO2 emissions and pollutants. All Fiat methane engines are immediately compatible with properlypurified biomethane.

All Fiat engines sold in Europe are compatible with the use of biofuels (bioethanol and biodiesel) mixed with upto 5% gasoline (E5) and up to 7% (B7) diesel. Most gasoline vehicles produced since 2000 are compatible withmixtures of up to 10% bioethanol (E10).

Fiat is the leader in the Brazilian market, with a completerange of vehicles featuring Flexfuel technologythat allows the use of various blends of gasolineand bioethanol.

By combining the TwinAir with DDCT technology,Fiat Powertrain Technologies is developingan engine capable of revolutionizing the classicapproach to hybrid technology, making italso efficient and sustainable on a car with anurban mission.

Initial evaluations show a reduction in CO2 emissionsin the urban environment of up to 24% (comparedto an aspirated TwinAir engine with a manual gearbox).

TwinAir is a real engineering gem that will pave theway for further developments; the first of thesewill be the combination with the duel-fuelmethane/gasoline engine that guarantees excellentperformance (“fun-to-drive”) and an even lower levelof CO2 emissions.

This plan also envisages further development intransmissions; outstanding among these is the DualDry Clutch Transmission or DDCT.In the final phase of experimentation, the DDCTguarantees significant reductions in consumption andCO2 emissions, in addition to improved driving comfort.

A 360° approachEco-compatible substances and materials (recycled, recyclable or of natural origin) are used more and more, bringing remarkable reductions in the use of PVC and thermosetting polymers in component construction.

World Class Manufacturing (WCM)This integrated model aims towards excellence across the entire production and logistics cycle, with specialattention to eliminating accidents, waste, and breakdowns. WCM is applied to the whole production environmentwith the goal of optimizing results through continuous improvement of processes in order to obtain the highestproduct quality, control and progressive reduction in production costs, flexibility in responding to market needs, and the involvement and motivation of personnel. In 2009, all Fiat Group Automobiles plants adopted the WCM system.

ISO 14001Fiat Group Automobiles aims to adopt an environmental management system at all its plants in line with ISO14001requirements, the standard for environmental certification and the guarantee of a management marked byenvironmental safeguards. At the end of 2009, 11 ISO 14001 certifications had been obtained by production sites accounting for almostthe total revenues. Suppliers are also required to respect higher environmental standards; at the end of 2009,91% of the value of direct materials purchased, came from ISO14001 certified supplier plants.

In Italy alone, every year around1.5 mil l ion vehicles arescrapped, creating a total ofmore than 1.2 million metrictonnes of material for disposal.

Eco-sustainable design

A European Union Directive (2000/53/CE) redefinedwaste recovery management and, starting inSeptember 2000, assigned responsibility for thedisposal of end-of-life vehicles to all the economicoperators involved in various aspects of theirmanagement, including the manufacturing company.

Fiat has taken on this commitment with greatdetermination, going beyond the legal requirements, withinterventions in design as well as production processes.

Focus on recoverability and materials.

All Group vehicles have been 95% recoverablefor some years now, anticipating the restrictionsimposed by directive 2005/64/CE or RRR(Reuse, Recycle, Recover) for the new homologationssince 2008 and registrations since 2010.

Fiat Group Automobiles pay also attention to the reuseof components from repair operations. Currently, the Group directly markets a line of reconditionedspare parts.

Fiat is adopting solutions that facilitate securingmaterials (facilitated removal of fluids) and optimizethe choice of plastic materials (reduction ofthermosetting polymers and PVC), with specialattention to the use of recycled materials.

The use of polypropylene from end-of-life vehicles hasalso been expanded and use of soundproofing materialsrecovered from the differentiated collection ofPET bottles is being evaluated.

REACH the fight against dangerous substances

The REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation of Chemical)regulates the production, importation, distribution and use of chemicalsubstances in the European Union with the aim of improvingawareness of the risks from new or already existing chemicalproducts. In effect as of June, 1st 2007, these regulations involvedetermining the danger levels of around 30,000 chemical productsand substances, and call for registration with the European ChemicalsAgency (ECHA).

In this area, Fiat Group Automobiles activities in 2009 concentratedon identifying dangerous substances (SVHC- Substances of VeryHigh Concern) in its products, which must be reported for the entiresupply chain.

Furthermore, IT systems have been modified and suppliers havebeen monitored through questionnaires with the aim of improvingthe process of identifying dangerous substances and incentivizingsuppliers to replace them.

Air quality in the passenger compartment

Fiat is particularly committed to improving air quality in the passengercompartment, giving priority to solutions with low emissions, andconstantly monitoring its vehicles. In particular, one main objectiveis minimizing emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).
