Overview of the evidence What is this evidence?

The Field Experience assessment is administered at the end of each field experience placement. Each teacher candidate is assessed by their school-based teacher educator (SBTE). The Field Experience assessment is a measurement of the candidates’ knowledge, skills, and professional dispositions. Faculty of the course associated with the field experience use the assessment results to decide whether a candidate passes the field experience, and whether they may continue with the program.

How is the evidence used to support improvement?

The data from this assessment are presented to the Professional Education Unit Assessment Committee. The PEU Assessment Committee’s analysis is shared during one of the Professional Education Unit's three annual Assessment Days. Attendees at the Assessment Day collaborate to identify strengths and areas in need of improvement, and make recommendations to improve our programs and candidate performance. Those recommendations are then brought to the appropriate stakeholders to be implemented. The Assessment Committee completes data-driven decision-making forms (DDDs) that document the data, our interpretation of the data, changes implemented based on the data, and a closing the loop section that measures the impact of changes made. See the DDD evidence to view all decisions made as a result of this evidence.

What criteria of success have been established on the measure, and how?

The rubric for this assessment has clearly defined performance levels, including “Approaches Expectations”, “Meets Expectations”, and “Exceeds Expectations”. Candidates are expected to be at the “Meets Expectations” level or above.

Directions: Please rate the teacher candidate’s performance during the field experience using the following rubric, and answer the questions at the bottom of the form. Use the indicators specified in the rubric to help guide your rating of candidate performance. The rating scale reflects the following levels of performance:

• Approaches / does not meet expectations: The candidate only partially succeeds in performing at an acceptable level.

• Meets expectations: This is the minimum level of acceptable candidate performance. Quality of the assessment

The language used in the assessment is consistent with language commonly used in education professional standards, including InTASC. The criteria in the assessment are aligned to the InTASC and CAEP standards, and to the key themes in Brockport’s conceptual framework. The validity of the assessment is verified by analyzing the convergent and predictive validity of the assessment using Spearman’s rho. Internal consistency of the assessment tool is verified by conducting Cronbach’s alpha. The data and instrument are reviewed by the PEU faculty during three “assessment days” held each year. Assessment day attendees also analyze data to ensure the raters are using the tool consistently over time. The performance ratings used in the assessment have also been operationalized, to encourage consistency between raters.

Reliability

Internal consistency is measured using Cronbach’s Alpha. The closer the reliability coefficients value is to 1, the higher level of internal consistency. A reliability coefficient of .7 or higher is expected. Analyses are conducted every semester for each type of placement. For example, the first placements (FE1) for all programs in Education and Human Development (EHD) have the same structure, so those placements’ data are analyzed together. The second field experience placement (FE2) in Physical Education (PE) is in a different setting, so it is analyzed separately.
