Welcome from the SpeakerI am proud to present this easy-to-read English as a Second Language Field

Trip Guide. This guide will help you get the most from your tour of the

Legislature Building.

During the tour, you will learn about Alberta’s Legislative Assembly and its

political history. Activities in the guide will help you learn parliamentary terms

and Alberta’s emblems. As well, pictures and numbered sections will keep you

in step with your tour guide.

I hope you enjoy your tour of the Legislature Building, and I am certain you

will walk away with a great deal of useful information about your province.

THE BUILDING& GROUNDSThe Legislature Building was under construction from to . People enjoy visiting the Legislature Grounds. They have picnics and take wedding photos. Children can swim in the reflecting pools.

There are special events in the Legislature Building during the year. Family Day is the third Monday in February, Canada Day is on July st and Celebrate the Season is in December.

The brown stone on the outside of the Legislature Building is sandstone from southern Alberta.

MAIN FLOOR ROTUNDA

This room is called the rotunda. There is a fountain in the middle of the floor. There are flags from world wars hanging in the rotunda. There is marble on the stairs and the walls of the building. The marble comes from Quebec and Pennsylvania.

Did you know?Each marble pillar weighs 16 tonnes.

This is a statue of Princess Louise Caroline Alberta. She was the daughter of Queen Victoria. Alberta became a province in . It was named after the princess.

This is a statue of Chief Crowfoot of the Blackfoot Tribe. He was born in . He signed Treaty Number Seven with the government of Canada. He was a brave, peaceful chief.

The town of Lake Louise in Banff National Park was also named after the princess.

Did you know? Queen Victoria gave Chief Crowfoot a gift. He is wearing this gift around his neck in the statue. It is a medallion with the face of Queen Victoria on it.

The Honourable Ed Stelmach is the th Premier of Alberta. He is the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party. He has an office in Edmonton. He is the MLA for the Fort Saskatchewan-Vegrevilleconstituency.

Dr. Kevin Taft is the Leader of the Official Opposition. His constituency is called Edmonton-Riverview. He is the leader of the Alberta Liberal Party.

The Honourable Ernest Manning was leader of the Social Credit Party.

Did you know?The North Saskatchewan River Valley runs through the constituency of Edmonton-Riverview and is the largest area of urban parkland in North America.

The Honourable Norman L. Kwong is Alberta’s th Lieutenant Governor. He was appointed by the Governor General of Canada, on the advice of the Prime Minister. He is the first person of Chinese heritage to serve as Lieutenant Governor in Alberta.

In the Honourable Alexander Rutherford became Alberta’s first Premier. He supported public education and the University of Alberta.

Did you know?You can take a tour of his home, Rutherford House. It is at the University of Alberta.

Did you know?The Honourable Norman L. Kwong was the first Chinese Canadian to play in the Canadian Football League (CFL).

The Honourable Grant MacEwan was the last Lieutenant Governor to wear the civil dress uniform. The uniform had gold braid sewn into the jacket. In each province the Lieutenant Governor represents Her Majesty Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada.

Did you know?MacEwan College is named for this Lieutenant Governor.

This is the Mace. It is a symbol of authority. The Mace sits on a table in the Assembly Chamber. It is made of gold and silver and has jewels around the crown.

This is the original Mace. It is made from household items such as a mug, toilet float, bits of an old bed, and gold paint. It was made in .

Did you know? Maces were once battle weapons. They had spikes and blades on the end.

Did you know?The original Mace was used for 50 years.

This is Alberta’s Coat of Arms. At the top is a crown. The crown represents Queen Elizabeth II. Below the Crown is a beaver.

This is the Chamber where the Members of the Legislative Assembly meet. MLAs are elected throughout the province of Alberta. Your MLA represents your constituency in the Legislative Assembly. You can contact your MLA by mail, telephone, email, or by arranging a meeting. You can watch Oral Question Period on Access TV, Monday to Thursday, starting at : p.m. You can also access the proceedings online at www.assembly.ab.ca.

Did you know?Speaker Kowalski is the MLA for the Barrhead-Morinville-Westlock constituency. MLAs from all parties elect the Speaker.

This is the Carillon Room. The carillon plays music like an electric organ. It makes a sound like bells when it plays. The carillon chimes on the hour. You can hear the bells chime outside the building.

The Palm Room is near the top of the dome. In the dome there are five palm trees. The State of California gave the palm trees to Alberta in . Today the trees are between five and seven metres high.

On the fifth floor there is a spot where people can hear the sound of running water.
