St. Patrick Church

Are You Called?

Nuns are amazing people. They are unassuming, holy people who seem to have a kind word and warm heart whenever you need one. I used to think they were born this way; that this came naturally to them, and the Convent was just a logical place to send them all. But then I realized that as they were growing up, they were just like normal lay people. They loved God, like us. They loved to serve, like us. They loved to pray, like us. So why are ‘they like they are’ and ‘we are like we are?’ A sister once talked about this difference. She said to think of an athlete. They can go for a run anytime, but only a few of them are going to compete in the Olympics. Those Olympians will be dedicated and able to focus on a mission and something bigger than themselves. They are not just running by themselves whenever they want; they are running with their Olympic teammates, they are training in obedience to their coach, and they are living a disciplined life. They shine in a way no other can because their life is or-dered to that great end they are pursuing. It is the same with Religious Sisters. Yes, they were just like us, but then they entered, lived, and learned in a world that helped them become finely tuned Olympians in their discipline, recognizing and dispensing God’s love. Now, this is not a plea for numbers. We should never desire to live a vocation other than the one God, Himself, desires for us. But for many reasons, the number of Religious Sisters in the U.S. has dropped 72% over the past 50 years, from 180,000 in 1965 to 50,000 in 2014. Without their presence, we have witnessed Catholic school closures, Catholic hospital buyouts and mergers, and convent consolidations, to name only a few. Everything about them is needed desperately in our world today. Last week this article was about charisms. Have you identified yours? Is it caring for the sick, educating the youth, praying for others, fighting for social justice? Are you called to inspire others with your words, feed or shelter those who are suffering, comfort victims of abuse, help the lost find Jesus again? Are you concerned about how to live out your charism? Do you feel that God may be calling you to be His Olympian? Do not be afraid! The Bible records this sentiment 365 times, perhaps to remind us every single day to do those things that scare us, to make those decisions which change our lives forever, to choose what others cannot. If any of this resonates with anyone, if it inspires questions, if it stirs your Spirit, please contact the Parish Office for information and advice. Nuns are amazing people! Peace, Andrew

Health tips for the Summer Season - Staying Healthy in Summer

Adapted from: CDC.gov and Healthy.net

1. Stay cool and hydrated. Drink plenty of water even if you don ’t feel thirsty.

2. While enjoying the sun and outdoors, protect yourself from overexposure to sunlight by wearing a hat and using natural sun-

screens without excessive chemicals. Have Aloe Vera gel handy for overexposure.

3. Use insect repellent during outdoor activities.

4. Keep up or begin an exercise program. Aerobic activity is important for keeping the heart strong and healthy. If you

only work out in a health club, take some time to do refreshing outdoor activities—- hiking, biking, swimming, or tennis. Recon-

necting with these activities will help keep your body and mind aligned.

5. Enjoy Nature’s bounty—fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables at their organic best. Consuming foods that are cooling and light

— fresh fruits, vegetable juices, raw vital salads, and lots of water — will nourish your body for summertime and activities.

6. Take some special summer time with your family, kids, and friends who share the enjoyment of outdoors. Plan a fun trip

if you’re able and motivated for a day or longer. Rekindling our Earth connection has benefits that last beyond this season.

During the summer months, there will be no 5 pm Sunday night

mass. This mass will resume in September.

Daily 8 am mass will be celebrated in the South

Room instead of the church during the summer

months. Please use the Washington Avenue side

door. The daily 8 am mass will return to the

church in September.

A reflection from our seminarian, Andrew,

Music is pure theology.

When trying to explain our thoughts of God, “Theos,” into words,

“Logos,” or Theology, we may struggle to express, or understand

the deep love for Jesus that each of us holds.

Misunderstandings, hurt feelings, defensive language can all

stem, not from poor theology, but from poor explanation. We can

see this repeatedly in our lives and throughout humanity’s history.

But music transcends all of this. The hymn “We shall rise again”

was based on today’s Gospel. Without speaking the language,

without knowing the Gospel message, and, dare I say, without

knowing Jesus, it would be difficult to find someone who did not

see longing, or love, or power within that music.

[cough] join our choir

The next time a theology conversation gets heated at a family

party, sing your favorite hymn. Some might laugh at you, some

might join you, but no one will be frowning. Music is pure theology.

Catechists/Co-Catechists Needed

Please consider joining our Faith Formation Team! In addition to catechists and co-catechists, we have many different needs where

your time and talent would be greatly appreciated. Classroom assistants assist the catechist with planned activities and crafts during

class time. They do not prepare lessons or teach. Safety Monitors help to maintain a safe and friendly environment during class time,

working as a liaison between the catechists, parents and students. Buddies are teens that assist children with special needs so that

these students can be successful in Faith Formation class. They help with crafts, completing worksheets and facilitating class activi-

ties. Teens that volunteer as buddies are students in grades 7-12. Liturgy of the Word with Children and Children’s Church leaders

are needed to lead children, ages 3 through 9, in prayer and discussion of the Sunday readings at a level easy for young children to

understand. It is offered at the 9 am mass from September through May. Office help is also needed occasionally to help prepare

crafts, worksheets and other materials to support our wonderful catechists throughout the school year. A list of office help volunteers

will be compiled and as assistance is needed, an email will go out requesting volunteers. No formal commitment is needed.

Songs of Praise in Isaiah

Isaiah 24: 14-16 14 They shall lift up their voice, they shall sing;

For the majesty of the Lord They shall cry aloud from the sea.

15 Therefore lglorify the Lord in the dawning light, mThe name of the Lord God of Israel in the coastlands of the sea. 16 From the ends of the earth we have heard songs:

“Glory to the righteous!” Isaiah 42: 10-11

10 nSing to the Lord a new song, And His praise from the ends of the earth, oYou who go down to the sea, and 4all that is in it, You coastlands and you inhabitants of them!

11 Let the wilderness and its cities lift up their voice, The villages that Kedar inhabits. Let the inhabitants of Sela sing, Let them shout from the top of the mountains.
