Welcome to Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church

Whether you are visiting for the first time, or are a longtime member, we are blessed to have you with us.

The cover of this bulletin reads, “This Is God’s House. All Are Welcome.” We take these words seriously.

We strive to be a community as diverse and hospitable as God’s kingdom. We don’t all look or act alike;

God knows we don’t all think alike. We don’t all read the Bible the same way. We bring different questions,

and we carry different burdens. But every Sunday, we worship together as one.

In this grand old church, we do Sunday morning in some pretty traditional (very Presbyterian) ways. We

study the teachings and the actions of Jesus. We sing many of the same hymns our grandparents sang.

Yet, in our preaching and our prayers, we wrestle with the challenges of the modern world. I hope your

heart will hear something personal and relevant this morning—a word of comfort, a spur to action, a call

to a deeper relationship with God.

After the service, please stick around. Take a tour of the church. Have a cup of coffee with us. Introduce

yourself to one of our clergy. There are tons of opportunities here to feed your soul and expand your spirit.

Try one out. You never know—you just might be home!Scott Black Johnston

Senior Pastor

If You Are New HerePlease fill out the Welcome card you will find in your pew. (The ushers can also provide one.) Place the card in the offering plate, hand it to an usher, or drop it off at the Visitors Table (inside the Fifth Avenue entrance). You may also complete the Welcome card online at fapc.org/welcome. The folks at the Visitors Table can provide you with information about our ministries and programs, volunteer opportunities, and the history of this congregation, which has served New York City since 1808. We also invite you on a guided tour of the church, starting from the rear of the Sanctuary shortly after the service.

These May Help During the ServiceIf you would like a large-print bulletin or a hearing-enhancement device, please ask an usher. You may return the hearing-enhancement device to the rear of the Chapel or Sanctuary after the service.

Welcoming ChildrenChildren are always welcome! The ushers can provide a worship bag or children’s Bible to keep your child engaged. (You may return these materials at the end of the service.) If you need to step out to attend to your child, we invite you to use our Family Room, located at the north end of the Gallery, just outside the Sanctuary (check the map on the back of the bulletin for the location). We also provide childcare for infants and toddlers from 9 am until 12:30 pm, downstairs in the LaDane Williamson Christian Education Center. Learn more about our Family Ministries at fapc.org.

If You Are in Need of PrayerDeacons (wearing white stoles) are available to pray with you after the service. Your prayers are confidential unless you request they be shared with our Congregational Care staff. You may also complete a prayer request card (available in the pews and at the entrances) and place it in the offering plate or hand to an usher. You may submit prayer requests online at fapc.org/prayer-requests.

Help With ParkingWe have a parking arrangement with the garage at 51 W. 56th St. For $16, you may park for up to three hours, seven days a week. Ask for discount coupons at the 55th Street reception desk.

Anthem Pilgrims’ Hymn • Stephen Paulus (1949–2014) Text: Michael Dennis Brown (b. 1940)

Even before we call on your nameTo ask you, O God,When we seek for the words to glorify you,You hear our prayer;Unceasing love, O unceasing love,Surpassing all we know.

Glory to the Father,And to the Son,And to the Holy Spirit.

Even with Darkness sealing us in,We breathe your name,And through all the days that follow so fast,We trust in you;Endless your grace, O endless your grace,Beyond all mortal dream.

Both now and for ever,And unto ages and ages,Amen.

Prayer for Illumination

Scripture Lessons

Psalm 139:1-18O Lord, you have searched me and known me.You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away. You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways.Even before a word is on my tongue, O Lord, you know it completely. You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me.Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot attain it.Where can I go from your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there. If I take the wings of the morning and settle at the farthest limits of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me fast.If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light around me become night,” even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is as bright as the day, for darkness is as light to you.For it was you who formed my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

Wonderful are your works; that I know very well.My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth.Your eyes beheld my unformed substance. In your book were written all the days that were formed for me, when none of them as yet existed. How weighty to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them!I try to count them—they are more than the sand; I come to the end—I am still with you.

John 8:1-11While Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him and he sat down and began to teach them. The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery; and making her stand before all of them, they said to him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” They said this to test him, so that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” And once again he bent down and wrote on the ground. When they heard it, they went away, one by one, beginning with the elders; and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus straightened up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, sir.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you. Go your way, and from now on do not sin again.”

One: This is the Word of God; for the People of God. All: Thanks be to God.

SermonThe Rev. Dr. Charlene Han Powell

“Let’s Talk About Addiction”

* Affirmation of Faith Romans 8:36-39

One: Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

All: No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

Offertory Anthem My Shepherd Will Supply My Need American Folk Hymn, arr. Mack Wilberg (b. 1955)

My Shepherd will supply my need; Jehovah is his Name;In pastures fresh he makes me feed, beside the living stream. He brings my wandering spirit back, when I forsake his ways,And leads me for his mercy’s sake, in paths of truth and grace.

When I walk through the shades of death, thy presence is my stay; One word of thy supporting breath drives all my fears away.Thy hand, in sight of all my foes, doth still my table spread; My cup with blessings overflows, thine oil anoints my head.

The sure provisions of my God attend me all my days;O may thy house be mine abode and all my work be praise! There would I find a settled rest while others go and come,No more a stranger, nor a guest; but like a child at home.

Worship Notes

Stephen Paulus’ The Three Hermits is based on Leo Tolstoy’s short story of the same name, an exploration of the nature of prayer. In the story, a bishop travels to a remote island because he has heard that three holy hermits live there, and he feels called to save their souls by teaching them how to pray properly. After spending a difficult day trying to teach them the Lord’s Prayer, he returns to his boat, which is anchored some distance from the island. As they’re practicing the words the bishop has just taught them, the hermits realize they have forgotten part of the prayer. They run out on top of the water to the bishop’s boat as though on dry land, and ask him to teach them again. The astonished bishop replies that God is obviously pleased with the way they pray already, and bids them go back to continue as they were. “The Pilgrims’ Hymn” is sung by a chorus of pilgrims accompanying the bishop on his voyage. This piece was sung at the funerals of Presidents Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford.

Baptized Today (11 am)

Theodore Samuel Hotchkiss, son of Erin and Sam Hotchkiss.

Thursday: Call for Volunteers at Project FIND

Our Project FIND ministry needs volunteers, and this Thursday (Feb. 14) is a good opportunity to get involved. On the second Thursday of the month, Fifth Avenue volunteers arrive at the Project FIND Coffeehouse (331 W. 42nd St.) at 4:45 pm to serve dinner to more than 100 seniors. Then you are invited to sit down and share life stories with the guests before departing. Your service will be finished by 7 pm. Our participation makes a real difference! Project FIND reports that attendance at the Coffeehouse dinners goes up 20-30% on those evenings when Fifth Avenue volunteers are serving. Contact Vijay Wijensundera ([email protected]) for details or to let him know you’re coming.

Class on Homeless Ministry Reset for Next Sunday

“Working with People Experiencing Homelessness,” an Adult Education seminar originally scheduled for Jan. 6, will now take place next Sunday (Feb. 17). John Sheehan, executive director of the Ecumenical Outreach Partnership, will describe the model of trauma-informed care that informs our outreach to our neighbors experiencing homelessness. John’s class will begin at 12:30 pm in the Corning Logan Room.

Coming Up: Parenting from the Pews

All parents of small children are invited to a special parenting event sponsored by Family Ministries. On Sunday, Feb. 24, the Rev. Dr. Charlene Han Powell—executive pastor, and mother of two—will moderate a panel discussion featuring three families whose children grew up at Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church before moving on to college and careers. “Parenting from the Pews” offers wisdom and insights from Greg and Kirsten Aiello, Kathy and Ken Henderson, and Constance and Glenn Hubbard. This event will begin at 9:30 am in the Boardroom. Breakfast will be served, and childcare will be available in the Christian Education Center.

Chili Cook-Off Winners & Souper Bowl Results

Thanks to everyone who attended the second successful year of the All-FAPC Chili Cook-Off last Sunday. Congratulations to our winning teams: Jesse Allen and Mark Zivkovic, whose Borderlands Chili won the judges’ prize for Best Chili; Eleanor and Mike Peters, whose West of Pecos Chili won the People’s Choice Award for the second consecutive year; and Team Chili Freeze (Chris, Gina and Lia Robertson, and Katelyn Ford), who took the Most Creative prize. The big winner was the Souper Bowl of Caring, which received $3,636.83 in door receipts and individual donations, which will be disbursed to the food pantries of two Fifth Avenue mission partners, The Bowery Mission and Jan Hus Presbyterian Church and Neighborhood House. Thank you for your generous support! (If you’re curious, 75% of your donations were designated in favor of the Los Angeles Rams in Sunday night’s Super Bowl. Alas.)

Have You Explored ‘Consecrated Ground’?

Consecrated Ground: Mapping the Bible in Story and Verse is the latest exhibition from the Arts & Our Faith Committee, currently on view in the Chesnut Gallery. The exhibit—conceived and created by Porter Binks—places Biblical events in their historical and geographical contexts. Additional content will be added for Lent, when Senior Pastor Scott Black Johnston launches “God Maps,” a sermon series inspired by Consecrated Ground. The exhibit will remain on display through Easter.

Adult Education

Each spring and fall, we offer courses in theology and Scripture, spirituality, social issues and other disciplines. The curriculum includes visiting authors, interfaith dialogue and other events. The Employment Advisory program offers monthly seminars on career-related issues. All classes are free and open to all, with no registration required. Information on upcoming classes is available at fapc.org.

Community Life

Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church offers an array of opportunities for community fellowship. We gather for congregation-wide events (such as Homecoming and the Thanksgiving luncheon) several times a year. Community groups offer an opportunity for more intimate engagement within this large congregation. Many of our groups gather neighbors from a particular part of the city; others focus on spiritual questions particular to women, 20s+30s, older adults, couples, new members, parents and the LGBTQ community. Our social clubs—City Club, CouplesPlus! and the Fifth Avenue Fellowship Club—gather for dinners and cocktail parties, museum and theater outings, and other social events throughout the year. Learn more about all of these opportunities at fapc.org. Contact: [email protected].

Congregational Care

If you (or others you know in our congregation) are going through a difficult time, we are here for you. We have a team of dedicated staff and volunteers who are available for counseling, home and hospital visits, medical escorts and prayer. You may also submit prayer requests at fapc.org/prayer-requests. Contact: [email protected].

Family Ministries

Family Ministries brings together people of diverse backgrounds and families of all definitions to nurture healthy children and strong, faithful families. We offer Sunday School, Youth Group, Children’s Choir, Little Lambs (programming for infants to toddlers), community groups for parents, FAPC-U (our college ministry), Vacation Bible School and special events all year long. Learn more (and register your child) at fapc.org. Contact: [email protected].

Membership

When we say “All are welcome,” we mean it. From the moment you walk through our doors, we invite you to be a part of our community. We want to learn your name, listen to your questions, and hear your story. Every step of the way, we choose you. Then in membership, you choose us. The process is simple. Through our Believing and Belonging seminars, you explore what it means to be a part of the Christian church, the Presbyterian tradition, and Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church. Whether you’re sure membership is right for you, or you’re just beginning to wonder if this may be your spiritual home, we’d love to have you in an upcoming class. Email Morgan King ([email protected]) or visit fapc.org/membership to learn more.
