THE WORD

God speaks to us in scripture, preaching, and song.

First Reading Isaiah 43:16-21 The prophet declares that long ago the Lord performed mighty deeds and delivered Israel from Egyptian bondage through the waters of the sea. Now, the Lord is about to do a new thing, bringing the exiles out of Babylon and through the wilderness in a new exodus.

16Thus says the LORD, who makes a way in the sea, a path in the mighty waters, 17who brings out chariot and horse, army and warrior; they lie down, they cannot rise, they are extinguished, quenched like a wick: 18Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. 19I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? Second Reading Philippians 3:4b-14 Writing to Christians in Philippi, Paul admits that his heritage and reputation could give him more reason than most people to place confidence in his spiritual pedigree. But the overwhelming grace of God in Jesus calls Paul to a new set of values.

[Paul writes:] 4bIf anyone else has reason to be confident in the flesh, I have more: 5circumcised on the eighth day, a member of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew born of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; 6as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. 7Yet whatever gains I had, these I have come to regard as loss because of Christ. 8More than that, I regard everything as loss because of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. The Gospel Acclamation Return to the Lord

The Holy Gospel John 12:1-8 Judas willfully misinterprets as waste Mary’s extravagant act of anointing Jesus’ feet with costly perfume. Jesus recognizes that her lavish gift is both an expression of love and an anticipation of his burial.

1Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, the home of Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 2There they gave a dinner for him. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those at the table with him. 3Mary took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus’ feet, and wiped them with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was about to betray him), said, 5“Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?” 6(He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he kept the common purse and used to steal what was put into it.) 7Jesus said, “Leave her alone. The Apostles’ Creed

Let us affirm the Christian faith in the words of the Apostles’ Creed. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Seeking the grace, mercy, and love of almighty God, we offer our prayers for the church, for people in need, and for all of creation.

A brief silence.

God of resurrection and new life, inspire your church to reconsider what makes us holy. When we focus on our own piety or the sins of others, show us Christ’s faithfulness. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Wherever destruction by flood, famine, or fire has devastated land and lives, cause green shoots to spring up, giving hope and vision for your promised future. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Where nations are embroiled in chaos and unrest, cut a clear path for your people to follow. Lead us in ways of reconciliation and foretell the new things you prepare. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

60+ FUN & FELLOWSHIP - SENIORS MINISTRY – April 11 @ noon

This month we feature a Master Gardener, Karen Eble Dickter. Karen will tell

us about the Master Gardener Program, the community gardens she is

involved in, and give us some basic gardening information about soils,

invasives, and pruning. Please note that April is a BYOL month. What’s that

mean? It means bring your own lunch. Coffee, tea, and a variety of desserts

will be provided. Open to all. Bring a friend or neighbor. Fellowship, food and

learning. You don’t want to miss it.

REJOICING SPIRITS – April 16 @ 7 pm

Rejoicing Spirits is an innovative ministry that works to enrich the faith lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, their families and friends and other supportive community members through a monthly worship experience. Join us on Tuesday, April 16 @ 7:00 pm in the Sanctuary.

The service is open to anyone. We also ask you to share this information to any family or individual who would benefit from this monthly worship experience.

It is finally spring and we need to spruce up the flower beds around the church! It you have had a garden before, please email Bev Bortz (bwbortz@uecco.net) and let her know if you can continue to care for your garden or if you want to “retire.” If you would like to adopt one of the gardens, please either email Bev or see her in church. We also have containers in the front of the church that would like some attention. They would need plants that can take a lot of sun, deer-resistant and you would need to be sure they get watered on a regular basis. GREEN TEAM TIP: A reminder that when you throw things away, there is no such place as "away"! Landfills are one of the sources of emission affecting climate change. Unneeded items can go to thrift stores or organizations like Cradles to Crayons. Be mindful of "why" and "how" when you shop - if we're discarding a lot, perhaps we're buying too much, in excess of what's really needed. And shopping locally eliminates shipping packaging and transportation costs. We are reminding all organizations to keep articles for the Sunday program and enews at 600 characters (with spaces) or less. This is an attempt to keep

the overall Sunday program and enews at a reasonable length.

Mid-Week Dinner Church + Wednesday March 13 – April 10.

12 noon – bring your own sandwich. 6:30 pm – with home-made soups. Dinner Church is an intergenerational opportunity to gather in Parish Hall on specific Wednesdays in Lent where we will gather around scripture, celebrate Holy Communion, share in conversation and enjoy a meal together. A sign-up sheet is located in the lobby for soup, bread and dessert to be served at 6:30 pm.
