Our Lady of Aparecida: Mother of the Poor

This year Brazil celebrates the 300th year since the image of our Lady of Conception, dear to the people of Brazil as Our Lady of the Apparition (Aparecida), was found. It happened in the early eighteenth century. Brazil had experienced a long pe-riod marked by slavery. It is estimated that over the course of 400 years around 5.5 million slaves were brought to the country, of which only 4.8 million ar-rived alive. The rest perished in the ships on their way from Africa. It is within this inhuman context that Mary comes to reach out to the poor, and is trans-formed into a sign of resistance and a preferential op-tion for the poor.

At that time, the small village of Guaratinguetá re-ceived the visit of Count Pedro de Almeida, governor of the then territories of São Paulo and Minas de Ouro (today Minas Gerais). The population decided to or-ganize a feast to receive him. It was the lot of a group of fishermen who lived in extreme poverty (semi-slavery) to provide fish for the count and his party.

The fishermen Domingos Garcia, Felipe Pedroso, and João Alves prayed to Our Lady but they were unsuc-cessful. After several futile attempts to catch fish, João Alves decided to cast the nets for the last time. There were no fish in their nets, but to their surprise, there appeared the fragile body of a black image of Our La-dy of the Conception, but without a head. Seized with emotion, they cast the nets once more and they pulled up a head which fit the body perfectly. This gave them the courage to cast the nets once again, and this time they pulled up a net full of fish. This event was soon interpreted as a divine intervention and other miracles followed. After fifteen years the family of Felipe Car-doso constructed a small oratory to receive the neigh-bors and the pilgrims. In 1734, a chapel was built which gave rise to the old basilica.

Today there is a new basilica which welcomes mil-lions of pilgrims each year. During his visit to Brazil in 2014, Francis offered a theological reading of Aparecida. The apparitions at Aparecida show us how God offers all of humanity his own mother, and gives us a lesson about himself. It is “a lesson of humility, an essential element of the DNA of God”.

The fishermen only possessed a fragile boat that badly needed repairs. They worked hard but “despite their work and fatigue, the nets are empty”, continued the Pope. “Then God comes as a surprise with the weak and broken image of Mary. God comes when they were not expecting anything anymore and He comes in a new way. He comes in the image of fragile clay, blackened by the waters of the river, and aged with the passing of time. God always comes with the trappings of the small”, said the Pope. The fishermen give unity to the body and the head. “That which was broken is made whole again. In a Brazil shamelessly divided by the wall of slavery, the Mother of Jesus presents her-self with a black face, first divided but later united, in the hands of fishermen.”

Aparecida offers an invitation to all Christians in the world to make whole that which is broken. “How can we make the walls, the abyss, and the distances van-ish? How can we be instruments of reconciliation? In the end, the fishermen carried the mystery to their homes. The simple people always have space for mys-tery. We have to relearn this simplicity which permits the mystery to enter our hearts because “in the house of the poor, God always finds a home”. They gather around her. They reveal their pains and entrust their pleas. God wants to be brought into our homes, our lives, our hearts. He awakens in us the desire to call our neighbors, so that we can show others her beauty. How much space do we give to this mystery in our lives and how have we shared this mystery?

The Pope reminded us that Aparecida happened at a crossroads. It was at the crossroads of a colonized country, mired in social injustice. “God appears at the crossroads.” What are the crossroads of history at this moment in time, and how do they challenge us to-wards new missionary responses?

Time for you to “Get on the Bus”

This May, as an integral part of the Restorative Jus-tice Program of our Diocesan Office of Social Min-istry, Bishop McElroy encourages our BSP parish-ioners to help provide an opportunity for over 1,000 children of incarcerated parents to visit with their parents on Mother’s Day or Father’s Day. Six buses will carry these hidden victims of crime to seven prisons in or near California. We are called to do our part, and to inform and encourage others to partici-pate in and support the program through donations, volunteer efforts and prayers. Get On The Bus affords us all the opportunity to live out the Gospel mandate, “I was in prison and you visited me” (Matthew 25:37).

For more information visit: www.getonthebus.us or phone 818-980-7714, or contact Deacon Jim Walsh at 858-490-8375 or [email protected].

AROUND TOWN

Daily Prayer for Our Priests

O Jesus, I pray for your faithful and fervent priests; for your unfaithful & tepid priests; for your priests laboring at home or abroad in distant mission fields; for your tempted priests; for your lonely & desolate priests; for your young priests; for your dying priests; for the souls of your priests in Purgatory. But above all, I recommend to you the priests dearest to me: the priest who baptized me, the priests who absolved me from my sins, the priests at whose Masses I assisted & who gave me Your body & blood in Communion, the priests to whom I am indebted any other way especially (name….) O Jesus, keep them all close to your heart, and bless them abundantly in time & in eternity. Amen. --St. Therese of Lisieux
