“Shall not we, in this valley of tears, find it a pleasure to remain in the company of our best Friend...who can do for us everything that

is good, who loves us most tenderly, and who, for that very reason, dwells with us always?” (St Alphonsus Ligouri)

Why are the statues veiled

during the last two weeks of Lent?

It has been the custom of the Roman Catholic Church to veil the crosses and the images of the saints from the 5th Sunday of Lent until East-er...one of the defining characteristics of the season known as Passiontide. This practice has profound effects on the faithful during this most intense peri-od of preparation for Easter. As we have been denying ourselves various pleasures throughout the season of Lent, now the Church even denies herself the beauty of the images of our Lord and the saints, to assist us in our last two weeks of self denial and sacrifice before the final “unveiling” of our Lord’s resurrection from the dead.
