STRAIGHT LINES “God writes straight with crooked lines,” the saying goes. The power of Paul’s testimony that everything is junk but knowledge of Jesus and the power of his resurrection is a straight enough message. And, God knows, Paul had a crooked journey before his blinding insight straight from God. Through Isaiah, God reminds us all that the past great works were as nothing compared to the new creation. “Can’t you see it?” we are asked, as if we are still wandering along our crooked lines. And there is no straighter line than that between the woman whose misery is intense and the God whose mercy in Jesus is deeper and more acute. You just can’t beat this kind of good news.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Three years ago, as we made the shift in the Eucharistic Prayer from “Benedict” to “Francis,” we named a “treasure” in our tradition. From apostolic times, the Church has sent disciples on mission with a mandate to proclaim the gospel. Paul and Barnabas and Timothy come to mind as men invested with responsibility for community and mission. First we see bishops, “overseers,” good men appointed by the ac-claim of their people, the center of leadership, of prayer, of word and sacrament. Their territories were small initially, small enough to get everyone into one room and for the bishop to know everyone’s name. In time, men were appointed to function as a council of advisers, “elders,” or presbyters. That isn’t a comment on chronological age, rather it indicates the maturity of their wisdom and faith. Before long, and only when the bishop was absent, some of these men “stood in” for him to do what bishops usually did: preaching, presiding at Eucharist. The deacons had a strong and visible role in liturgy and service, especially in the care of the poor, but were gradually overshadowed by the new importance of the presbyter. As the Roman Empire first tottered and then collapsed completely by 476, bishops increasingly became civil servants to maintain order and dispense justice. Conferences and duties summoned bishops away from their home posts, and presbyters were entrusted with the sacramental and preaching duties, even though at one time runners were sent out from the bishop’s Mass to bring fragments of the host to drop into chalices as a sign of the church’s unity around its bishop. —Rev. EXPLAINING HOLY WEEK THE CHRISM MASS derives its name from the blessing and distribution of the Chrism and other oils by the Bishop that occurs during this Mass. The Chrism oil is used for the sacraments, Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders (ordinations). The Oil of the Sick is used for the sacrament, Anointing of the Sick. The Oil of the Catechumens is used for Baptisms to strengthen the candi-date to turn towards Christ. Oils have been used for centuries for healing and blessing in various occasions and there are many examples of this throughout

scriptures. The oils are all blessed together and then split up among the parishes in the Diocese so that we are all sharing in each other’s sacramental celebrations during the year. This Mass is done during Holy Week as these oils are presented to the parish community on Holy Thursday and are first used at the Easter Vigil for those being initiated into the Church at that time.

THE TRIDUUM includes three pieces Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday—which is actually one long, extended service that celebrates the last days of Jesus life and mission, his death, and his resurrection. The Triduum is the ultimate story of who we are as a people and as a church. It is our most important and central celebration of the entire year. Each part of the Triduum is a rich, deep experience of symbols and stories. These three celebrations are the central services offered and thus there are no other Masses offered during these three days. However, the community is encouraged to engage in prayer both individu-ally and communally, and thus we are offering Morning Prayer all three days for those wishing to pray the psalms together and enter into the spirit of prayer and reflection that this Holy Week calls us to.

Carmel Mission Book Club News The Book Club is now reading Church Fathers from Clement of Rome to Augustine. The club meets at 2 p.m. Saturdays in MacMahon Center. All are welcome, and refreshments are served. There is no charge, but a goodwill donation is welcome to cover the cost of the book and shipping. Written by Pope Emeritus Benedict VI, this selection is a rich and engrossing survey of the early Church, focusing on the followers of Christ immediately succeeding the Apostles, the “Apostolic Fathers.” This book is a wonderful way to get to know many of the prominent early Christians and the tremendous spiritually-rich legacy they have bequeathed to us. Wheelchairs Available: Wheelchairs are available in the Museum Gift Store for anyone needing mobility assistance while visiting. The irregular surfaces around the Mission can make it difficult for parishioners to get from their cars to the Basilica. Please let the staff know and they will be happy to assist you.

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY

C a r m e l M i s s i o n Basilica will celebrate a special Mass at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 3rd for Divine

Mercy Sunday. Fr. Miguel Rodriguez will be the celebrant. All are invited to attend. Confessions from 2:00–2:45 p.m. At 2:30 p.m. the Rosary will be recited followed by the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. A procession will announce the start of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. It is highly recommended that those wishing to receive the Sacrament of Reconcilia-tion, do so on Saturday. Sister Gloria earned her D.Min. at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, and served for many years as Adjunct Profes-sor of Theology and Hispanic Ministry at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley. She now serves the Diocese of Monterey as Vicar for Religious and as Human Trafficking Liaison. Sister Gloria’s topic will be “Women in the Church”. We will look at both the historical and contemporary roles of women in the Church, and consider the theological and historical foun-dations of the roles we all play.
