fig + kindle is the sweet incarnation of New England’s rough landscape and unapologetic culture. We espouse a view of candy making that puts sustainability before aesthetics, that puts local before exotic, and that puts the wonky and uneven before the precisely manufactured. Our inspiration comes from rough-hewn stone walls, cottage gardens fragrant with rosemary, and wood smoke filled winds tempered by hot coffee.

fig + kindle specializes in artisan sweets, made by hand in Boston using antique methods. Our offerings change with the season—each release is created as a cohesive collection to be enjoyed for a limited time. Sweets are 100% handmade, local and organic whenever possible, and always free of GMO’s, corn syrup, preservatives, and artificial colors and flavors.

Helmed by Sarah Goldschmidt with the aid of twin, Benjamin Goldschmidt, and Daniel Boccato, f + k was born of an interest in the intersection of food and culture. With a degree in cultural anthropology, Goldschmidt pursued an avenue to express New England’s rich, though overlooked, culinary heritage.

Thus fig + kindle was born and born to be a different kind of candy company: one whose philosophy and practice struck free of the canon of haute confectionery that has set standards in Paris and NYC. Instead, fig + kindle focuses on producing sweets that stay true to our locale: a rocky landscape, an agricultural past, and a fierce sense of independence.

Launched underground in 2008, fig + kindle has received attention from both local and international media outlets, prompting the founders to make the business an official operation selling to the public. The company now sells confections and jams, caters events and weddings, and releases a monthly tasting box of small-batch sweets.

fig + kindle produces a seasonal collection of candies and pastries that is available online, at farmers markets in the Boston area, and independent retailers nation-wide. Selections include our signature toasted almond anise glass brittle, vanilla chamomile marshmallows, Valrhona salt + pepper sablés, and rich salted caramels coated in dark chocolate from Columbia’s renown Santander. We also produce a monthly tasting box packed with all-new candies, pastries, and single-run confitures crafted from local fruit hand-picked by the f + k team.

Aside from our publicly-available roster of sweets, f + k caters private and public events, weddings, and celebrations of all kinds. We have crafted custom holiday packages for international corporations, whimsical wedding cakes, and more custom chocolates that we can count. f + k takes pride in reaching out to other creative companies, doing catering work and collaborations with design studios, environmental groups, and museums.

All fig + kindle products are crafted from ingredients that have been locally, and/or sustainably sourced. Fair trade and organic herbs and spices are gleaned from both New England as well as international sources; eggs, cream, and butter are all New England local products. We proudly use Santander and Taza chocolates in our products. Taza, a Massachusetts bean-to-bar company supplies chocolate and cacao nibs for baked goods. Santander, a single-origin, sustainable, and slave-free cacao grower and chocolate producer, provides the couverture we use in crafting chocolate confections.

fig + kindle holds a design philosophy that emphasizes natural beauty. We do not dye, shape, or alter our ingredients in any way to produce beautiful candies: our glass brittles illuminate in the light naturally, chocolates and caramels are cut and shaped by hand, our marshmallows and pastries display an unabashedly rustic look while packing an unexpectedly sophisticated punch. The design is in the study of contrast.

All fig + kindle products are packaged in clear or kraft materials that or may not be adorned with decorative paper. Our packaging is simple and to the point; both classic and contemporary with clean lines and our fun yellow fig, we aim at eye-catching yet subdued design for curated store shelves.
