Objectives

Design a Sports Open for a boxing show to be aired on ESPN.

Marketing ObjectivesThe demographic for boxing is 50-year-old males.ESPN require a redesign of the product to attract a youthful audience.

The Programme"Fighting Rings” will be aired weekly on ESPN and requires a 30-second open. The mission, should one choose to take it, is to design four frames to pitch theconcept to ESPN executives. The last frame will incorporate your typographictreatment for “Fighting Rings” and also include the ESPN logo.

The Concept

The "Fighting Rings" will attempt to promote the memorable elements of what thegreat sport offers .The trailer will feature snippets of boxing history communicated ona minimalist substrate. I will using elements of time, past boxing heros, ringside girls, training using film as well as animation.

The use of shot angles and sizes will be based on the element highlighted within the30 seconds. The frames will also capture the glitz and glamour of boxing via the arena lighting .Atmospheric audio such as crowd cheers, photographic flashes,on a bed of high adrenaline orchestral soundtrack will assist in immersing the viewer in the boxing experience. A digital clock will run in the background of the trailer andat :00 secs the ring bell will sound and the main title, “Fighting Rings” hit the screen.

Criticism

Zac....I really the way you are using the digital countdown;this is a very unique treatment! The first three framesall feel strong and appropriate, but the last feels a littleweak to me compared to the others.I think it is the"Fighting Rings" logo.

Prof. ...I think that frames 1 and 3 are your most successful ones.I would add a level of transparency on the numbers in frame 1,for consistency.Frame 2 needs some work. The perspective is offon multiple levels. The perspective of that floor in relationship to theangle of the shoe (the floor needs to come "down" and not be tiltedupward that dramatically) and the angle of the "rope" conflicts withthe floor as well....

Cannistra. ...I agree with everyone else. Love the concept of the numbers, but feel the fourth frame is the most inconsistent...

McGill The "30" in comparison is just so solid and saturatedthat it is almost too much. But I do like the way that the 30is integrated into the scene with the boxer stepping through it.If there was a way to explore that aspect more it might be kind of cool.

Revisions cont'dProf....if you tried a vignette with progressively black gradient on the sides, to contain the frames and to make frames 2 and 4 more consistent with the others, I think that it would work better. I am still not fond of that last typographical choice on the last frame and the ring looks somewhat illustrative in contrast to the rest...
