4.

The highest mark attained for the multiple choice question was 20 and the lowest was 10.

Three 43% of the candidates scored marks ranging from 17-20 which was a good attempt by the teachers

in teaching students in tackling multiple choice questions. However, students seemed to be confused over

some of the questions especially where the distractors were very close to the correct answer. It is

recommended that students read the questions carefully before deciding the best answer. They need to be

guided well on how best they can answer multiple choice questions.

SECTION B:

The questions were well answered as expected. There was an improvement in the structure of answers as

well.

GENERAL REMARKS:

QUESTION 1:

(a) Generally this question was well done. The candidates were able to answer this part of the

questions correctly.

(i) Candidates had a fair idea on Wardrobe planning - very well answered.

(ii) Most of the candidates could not identify the suitable fabric for a formal suit.

(iii) All candidates were able to identify the advantage of buying ready-made garments.

(b) (i), (ii) well answered by most candidates. They were able to identify the two cultural dresses

worn in Fiji and also named the style features common to both dresses.

(c) This question was very well done on recycling.

(d) This part was not well done; most of the candidates could not elaborate on the elements and

principles of design suitable for different figure types. Teachers need to teach this topic very well.

The highest mark scored in this question was 9 and lowest mark was 5.5

Page 5: FIJI SCHOOL LEAVING CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION · (ii) Most of the candidates could not identify the suitable fabric for a formal suit. (iii) All candidates were able to identify the

5.

QUESTION 2:

(a) This part of the of the question was not done as expected. The candidates were unable to identify

the styles of advertisements. This showed that this topic was not well taught in class.

(b) (i), (ii) These questions were quite well answered. Candidates knew the term “lay-buy” and the

disadvantages of purchasing through lay-buy.

(iii) Most of the candidates did not identify two roles of the consumer council as required.

(c) (i) Generally well done but some candidates failed to explain the reasons for selecting the

wool/polyester blend fabric for the jacket.

(ii) The care label for the jacket was not done well. An example was done for the candidates

but they still failed to understand the requirement of the question. However, few

candidates attempted the question quite well.

This showed that candidates did not read instructions carefully.

The highest mark scored in this question was 6.5 and lowest mark was 3.

QUESTION 3:

(a) (i), (ii) Not very well answered. Most of the candidates had this question wrong. Candidates need

to be taught about the uses of different textile fibres and the properties of fibres that make it

suitable for that use. They also need to know the effect of different construction methods

on the performance of the fabric. Cotton is a natural fibre with properties such as

absorbency, strength, good conductivity, non-irritating while acrylic is a synthetic fibre

with properties such as good insulation, softness, resilience; knitted fabrics have good

elasticity, thus the garment made out of this combination would have all these named

properties.

(b) (i) Not well answered, the candidates were not aware of the properties of natural fibre - cotton.

(ii) Generally well answered. Most candidates identified nylon as a synthetic fibre and non-

absorbency as its property.

(iii) Not well answered – the candidates were unable to explain the reason for drying wollen

garments flat.

(c) (i) More than 50% of candidates managed to identify the type of fabric decoration as tie and

dyeing.

(ii) Candidates were confused with the printing method shown in the illustration. Most of them

wrote batik printing, when the answer should have been simply printing.

Page 6: FIJI SCHOOL LEAVING CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION · (ii) Most of the candidates could not identify the suitable fabric for a formal suit. (iii) All candidates were able to identify the

6.

(d) (i) , (ii) None of the students had these two questions right. Proban (flame resistant finish) and

Sanforising(shrink resistant finish) are two special finishes applied to cotton, rayon and

linen fabrics to improve their performance. It seemed that candidates were not taught on

special finishes.

(e) This question was very well answered.

(f) Not well answered. Again soil-resistant finish comes under the topic special finishes. Candidates

need to know about the advantages and disadvantages of the prescribed special finishes.

(g) Candidates failed to identify the two types of yarns. A simple answer was required for (i) and (ii).

The 1st one is a staple yarn and 2

nd one is a filament yarn.

The highest mark scored in this question was 5.5 and lowest mark was 2.5.

QUESTION 4:

(a) (i), (ii), (iii) This question was averagely done. Candidates had to identify the reason for the

stitching faults and give a solution to the problem. The sewing machine is one of the first topics to

teach and it seems that teachers failed to teach the basics in use of the sewing machining.

(b) This part of the question was not done well. It seems that some candidates did not know the

different under laying fabrics used in jacket making. Most of the candidates had this question

wrong.

(c) None of the candidates had this question right. Lay out on Plaids is an important topic in the

Prescription and this has not been taught well to students.

(d) Very poorly done. Candidates should know the steps in making the jacket and this procedure is

one of the common and important one as this is the place where the front and back part of the

jacket with the collar is assembled together.

The highest mark scored in this question was 6.5 and lowest mark was 0.5.

QUESTION 5:

(a) (i) This question was not done very well. Most of the candidates did not know construction

processes. The types of pleats should have been taught to students. Teachers should make

charts with all construction processes and techniques samples and hang them in the

classroom.

(ii) None of the candidates managed to do this question correctly. The steps in completing the

box pleat in (i) was not known to candidates.

Page 7: FIJI SCHOOL LEAVING CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION · (ii) Most of the candidates could not identify the suitable fabric for a formal suit. (iii) All candidates were able to identify the

7.

(iii) The candidates did not do this part well. The candidates did not know the types of seam

finishes for simple every day wear garments.

(b) This question on commercial patterns is a repetition of form 3 and 4 work, yet candidates did not

know how to go about answering the question. Usually the answers in these questions are picked

from the table itself, for example, the notions, recommended fabric , the amount of fabric

required, the amount of interfacing are all information present in the table.

(c) Averagely done. Most candidates failed to identify the two methods of repair – print patch or

patching and darning or filling in would be ok.

(d) (i), (ii) Very well done. Candidates managed to identify the darts and indicated where the darts

can be used.

The highest mark scored in this question was 6.5 and lowest mark was 0.

SECTION C ESSAYS

The Essays were well structured and well answered. Most of the candidates selected Question 2 and

Question 3. Some candidates attempted question 1 and question 4 which was also well done. The

candidates really expressed themselves well and scored good marks.

The highest mark attained in this section was 10.

RECOMMENDATION:

1. The teacher is advised to know the content of the prescription very well.

2. The practical has to be done with the guidance of the teacher as it was seen that most of the

candidates did not score good marks in this section (garment construction).

3. Labs have to be done to reinforce the learning aspect of the content of Clothing and Textiles.

4. The teacher are requested to guide the students well and prepare them for examination

thoroughly and be proud of them. If teachers are not confident in appropriate contents, they could

contact the Home Economics Advisors for help and advice.
