It is reported that a mad dog hasbeen on lose, entered a Kavashop and ate three copies of a

newspaper generally not read bypopular artists like Steve Singh,Saineshkumar and Sanjay Sen.

They say the mad dog has otherdog friends who lay in wait by theroadside and bark aloud tosignalthe mad dog as soon as thepaper is out.

But this time the mad dog madea big mistake. He entered a Kavashop and grabbed three copies toeat. When the owner looked at himseriously and questioned his acts;the mad do quipped and side-

stepped. As soon as the owner gotbusy, the dirty, cunning mad doggrabbed the bundle of paper andran out in the street. The owner

gave a chase and grabbed him onthe street to retrieve all the news-papers.

Wimpy mad dog sniffed andcried and complained but ownerdidnt listen to his wasteful plea.Anyway the owner grabbed thebundle from him and gave a goodpiece of his mind lest he will reportto police.

The felt like kicking the dogsbutt then he thought police mightcharge him with cruelty to animal.

In Fiji one dog lover onceapplied red chilly right under hisdogs tail ( where it hurts most) forbeing aggressive to the neighbors.

IWAKI, (PACNEWS) - FijianPrime Minister VoreqeBainimarama has supportedIndonesia's bid to become anassociate member of theMelanesian Spearhead Group(MSG).

In an interview with FijiJournalists in Iwaki, Japan,Bainimarama confirmed thathaving Indonesia as an associ-ate member made sense giventhe population in Papua is morethan 11 million Melanesian peo-ple in Indonesia. Bainimaramasaid Fiji will not interfere inIndonesias sovereignty.

There is a whole lot of talk

about Papua but you knowPapua comes under the gover-nance of Indonesia and if youwant to do anything in Papua, the best thing to do is to bring inIndonesia, no matter what, if webring in Papua separately, itdoesnt make sense.

Indonesia will continue to dowhat it wants to do. We haveheard talks of assault, humanrights abuses and the best thingto do is to bring in Indonesia asan associate member of theMSG," he said. He said the issueof alleged human rights abuseby Indonesia will best to be dealtwith if Indonesia is allowed in the

MSG bloc. There is a lot of con-cern about what is happening inPapua but at the end of the day,Papua comes under the sover-eignty of Indonesia and the lastthing we want to do is to interferewith someone elses sovereign-ty. As our foreign policy says-We are friends to all and ene-mies to none. We dont want tomake enemies and I am sure ifwe talk to Indonesia about someof these allegations they will dosomething about it- it makessense," said Bainimarama. It isexpected a decision on the issuewill be decided when theMelanesian Leaders will meet in

Solomon Islands in July. Papua New Guinea Prime

Minister Peter ONeill earlier thismonth backed a move byIndonesia to become an associ-ate member of the MSG.Indonesia would be representedby the governors of its five east-ern provinces with substantialMelanesian populations at meet-ings of the MSG. Parents of Kargil martyr CaptSaurabh Kalia on Monday thankedthe Centre for indicating that it couldapproach the International Court ofJustice (ICJ) against his brutal tor-ture by the Pakistan army, but saidthey would believe its assurancesonly if these are backed by concreteaction.

External affairs minister SushmaSwaraj has said but not done any-thing. After 16 years, a governmentsays that we cannot go to the inter-national court. Today she is sayingthat we can. So, many years havepassed now. Its time for them totake action. If you want to do some-thing then do it, Captain Kaliasmother, Vijaya said.

Reacting to Sushmas statement, the martyrs father NK Kalia, 66, aretired Council of Scientific andIndustrial Research (CSIR) scientist, said: I welcome the ministers initia-tive. But there should be some con-

crete outcome this time. Lots ofpromises have been made in thepast, but they have never been ful-filled.

Reversing its earlier stand, theCentre on Monday said it couldapproach the ICJ against the brutaltorture of the Kargil war hero by theneighbouring country in view of theexceptional circumstances of thecase.

In Udaipur, Swaraj said: It hasbeen decided that the way CaptainKalia was tortured created excep-tional circumstances and therefore, the government will change its affi-davit in the Supreme Court and askwhether under legal provisions theycould move the ICJ. If the courtgives a nod, then we will take theissue to the ICJ.

The parents said the then PrimeMinister Atal Behari Vajpayee hadassured them of all possible actionagainst the alleged atrocity, but noth-

ing was done.Vajpayee had promised us that

this issue would be raised withPakistan and also on the internation-al level. But in the past 16 years, nogovernment has taken any concretestep. This is not only for our son orus, but for the entire army which is

doing everything for the nation, saidthe martyrs father.

Kalia said he was pinning hopeon the Supreme Court now andwould continue to raise the issue tillhis last breath regardless of the out-come of his efforts.

Kalia had moved the SupremeCourt in 2012 seeking a direction tothe ministry of external affairs (MEA)to approach the ICJ for actionagainst the Pakistani armymen whokilled his son in violation of theGeneva Convention on treatment ofwar prisoners.

Earlier, the previous UnitedProgressive Alliance (UPA) govern-ment had told the Supreme Court inFebruary 2014 that it couldnt movethe ICJ as Pakistan might not permitit and no country can be so com-pelled to.

The Manmohan Singh govern-ment shockingly went to the extentof saying that the effect on relations

with our neighbour country has tobe kept in mind and that moving theICJ is not a legally enforceableright.

The apex court has now askedthe Modi government to make itsstand clear through an affidavit byAugust 25, the next date of hearing.

Captain Kalia and five other sol-diers were captured alive on May 15,1999, by Pakistani troops when theyhad gone out for a patrol duty in theKaskar area of Kargil. They werekept in captivity where they were tor-tured and their bodies were mutilat-ed, before they were killed.

Captain Kalias eardrums werepunctured with hot rods, his eyeswere punctured and his limbs andgenitals had been cut off. Most of histeeth and bones had also been bro-ken. The father of the slain soldierhad moved the Supreme Court in2012, demanding an internationalprobe.

On an average, the samples contained 3.5ppm of lead (anything above2.5 parts per million is consid-ered too much). The highestwas 4.59 ppm, said healthminister Satyendra Jain. Ihave asked the Commissionerof Food Safety to study thereport. We will take actionaccordingly.

The Delhi government hasdecided to initiate a caseagainst the company for sellingan unsafe product and impose

a financial penalty for mis-branding, officials said.

The two-minute noodlebrand that arrived in the coun-try in the 1980s turned into astaple for middle-class Indiansliving away from home whostruggle to eat on a smallbudget and is ubiquitous atschool and college canteens tosate sudden hunger pangs.

Officials in several otherstates, including Haryana,Odisha, Uttarakhand, Gujarat,Bihar, Punjab, Maharashtra,Assam and Tamil Nadu, saidthey had sent samples for test-ing at government labs. However, Nestle India saidsamples of the noodles, whichit tested in an external labora-

tory as well as in-house, werefound safe to eat with leadlevels within acceptable limits. The quality and safety of prod-ucts are the top priorities forthe company, it said in a state-ment. Amid the growing con-troversy, a Bihar court orderon Tuesday directed police toregister an FIR against two offi-cials of Nestle India andBollywood stars AmitabhBachchan, Madhuri Dixit andPreity Zinta, who have promot-ed the two-minute snack inadvertisements. The court inMuzaffarpur said they may bearrested if required. In Kerala, the state food ministry decidedto pull Maggi noodles fromgovernment-run supermarkets

and grocery outlets, known asSupplyco. This is a major set-back for the food giant asSupplyco runs more than2,000 shops in the state underthree brand names.

Last week, we decided notto take fresh stocks until Nestleis cleared of all charges.Around 1,700 outlets havetaken the product off theirshelves, food minister AnoopJacob said. The crackdownbegan after a spot check bythe Uttar Pradesh food safetydepartment found elevatedlevels of MSG and lead 17times above the permissiblelimit in packets of the snackduring a routine test.

The Centre said it is work-ing on a new law with a provi-sion of life imprisonment todeal with cases in which con-sumers of essential commodi-ties and food items are duped.

People indulging in confus-ing advertisement to promotesuch products will also beliable for stringent punishmentlike life sentence under thenew law, union food ministerRamvilas Paswan toldreporters in Bihar.

Ascorching heatwaveswept large parts of thecountry on Sunday as

the death toll in the past threeweeks crossed 2,200, thoughrain and thunderstormsbrought some respite to isolat-ed areas with the southwestmonsoon missing its due date.

Southern neighboursAndhra Pradesh andTelangana continued to bake ina budding El Nino year withofficials saying harsh tempera-tures will persist for at leastanother day. Experts say an ElNino, a weather anomaly thatleads to warming of sea-sur-

face temperatures in thePacific, often sparks blazingheat across Asia and dragsdown Indias June-Septembermonsoon.

Authorities in Andhra, whichhas recorded over 1,600deaths, cancelled doctorsleaves and advised people notto venture outside in the mid-dle of the day to avoid theworst of the heat, but intermit-tent power cuts needled thosewho remained indoors.Rajasthan continued to reel asthe mercury headed north withKota recording a maximumtemperature of 45 degrees

Celsius, while oppressive con-ditions were likely to prevail inmany parts.

West Bengal was set to getsome relief following a string ofhot and humid days, with the

weather office predicting rainand thunderstorms in the next24 hours. Rain or thunder-showers are likely to occur atisolated places in the Gangeticplains. The northern districts of

Darjeeling, Cooch Behar, andJalpaiguri are also expected toget rain in the next 24 hours, aMet official said.

Blistering heat scorchedisolated places in UttarPradesh with Banda districtrecording a maximum temper-ature of 46.4 degrees Celsius."We can't bear this heat. Thesituation is worsened by fre-quent power outages, saidRekha Tiwari, a housewife instate capital Lucknow.Authorities say most of thosekilled by the sweltering condi-tions are construction workers, the elderly or the homeless,

Govt downgrades monsoon forecast to 88%, stokes fears of droughtIndias June-September

monsoon, the lifeblood ofAsias third-largest economy, will most likely be deficientthis year with the met depart-ment downgrading its forecastfrom 93% to 88%, earth sci-ences minister Harsh Vardhansaid on Tuesday. The IndiaMeteorological Departments(IMD) revision -- which hadforecast below normal mon-soon in April -- will potentiallytoughen challenges for theNarendra Modi governmentalready battling a farm crisistriggered by unseasonal rainsin March-April this year.

The arrival of the mon-soons has already beendelayed in the countryssouthern tip, Kerala, by aboutfour-five days and large partsof the country experiencing asearing heat wave which hasleft near 2000 people dead.

Lets pray to God that therevised forecast does notcome true, Vardhan said,

implying how much the annu-al rains mean for the govern-ment and the country alreadyspooked by fears of theweather phenomenon, ElNino. El Nino, meaning littleboy in Spanish, is caused bya warming of sea-surfacetemperatures in the Pacific, triggering dry spells in south-east Asia.

Rainfall of less than 90% isconsidered to be a droughtyear. The latest prediction, however, has an error marginof 4 percentage points eitherway. The governmentexpressed concerns about abelow-par monsoon after theReserve Bank of India, takingadvantage of subdued infla-tion, cut interest rates for athird time this year onTuesday.

Prices of essential com-modities have already startedrising and they will rise furtherif the monsoon remains defi-cient as forecast by the gov-

ernment, said HarishGalipelli, head of commoditiesand currencies at InditradeDerivatives and Commodities. Its not good news for thefarming community that isunder distress. Last year, theirharvest was affected by poorrainfall and unseasonal rains. This years drought will deep-en their problems. Anger isgrowing in the countrysideafter unseasonal rain and hail-

storm ravaged farms earlierthis year, pushing many debt-laden farmers to suicide.Dipping farm incomes couldleave the NDA governmentvulnerable to sharper opposi-tion attacks, especially fromthe Congress, already on bat-tle mode over the controver-sial land acquisition bill.

The rains are vital not onlyfor agriculture and ruralincomes but also the broader

    economy.Should the rains be

patchy, industrial expansiontends to sputter too, sincenearly half of most consumeritems from cars and TV setsto gold jewelry are boughtby the rural consumers.

A poor monsoon couldalso mean the Modi govern-ment would have to concen-trate on mitigating its effectsby pumping in more money, taking the focus of policymak-ers away from reforms.

The rain-bearing system, that typically begins its four-month journey across India onJune 1 in Kerala, is also cru-cial for power, drinking andirrigation.

A bad monsoon hits powerproduction since hydropoweraccounts for a quarter ofIndias electricity output, criti-cal for industry and house-holds alike.

Drought-like conditions fanfood prices, often worsening

shortages of items such aspulses, onions and cookingoil. An advanced governmentestimate of winter outputmade before the recentunseasonal rains had alreadyprojected a 2.6% decline dueto effects of a late drought. Apoor monsoon could furthertrim harvest of major crops, such as rice and soya bean, pushing up food prices.

According to the Metdepartments simulation, which is not part of the officialmonsoon forecast, drier con-ditions are set to be moreacute in the grain-bowl north-west and central India, com-pared to the south and north-east. The government hasstockpiles of staples such asrice, wheat and sugar frombumper harvests in the lastfew years but it has limitedmeans to control a jump incosts of fruits and vegetablesthat have the largest impacton food inflation in India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi saidon Monday he wont tolerate any dis-crimination or violence against anycommunity and called anti-minoritycomments by some Sangh Parivarleaders unfortunate and uncalledfor, in his strongest response yet ongrowing incidents of hate speeches.

Our Constitution guarantees reli-gious freedom to every citizen andthat is not negotiable. I have said thisbefore and I say it again: any discrim-ination or violence against any com-munity will not be tolerated,'' Modisaid in an interview to United New ofIndia (UNI).

When asked how he would rein inparty leaders spewing hatred, Modisaid his government stood for everyIndian regardless of caste or creedand would work for the progress ofevery one of them. ''Every faith in ourcountry has equal rights; it is equalnot only before the law but also beforesociety," he said. My governmentsfocus has been on governance anddevelopment. Our focal point is clear:Vikas, Vikas, Vikas; jobs, jobs, jobs.

The PM was under fire over hissilence regarding the controversialghar-wapsi conversion programmesand allegations of religious persecu-tion but broke his silence in February

in an unequivocal condemnation ofreligious violence following a series ofattacks on Christian properties inDelhi. My government will ensure thatthere is complete freedom of faith andthat everyone has the undeniableright to retain or adopt the religion ofhis or her choice without coercion orundue influence, Modi had said inFebruary at a Christian event.

Analysts have warned a spate ofhate speeches by members of theBJP as well as RSS and SanghParivar threaten to distract from thePMs development agenda and givethe Opposition, especially theCongress, a handle to stallParliament. In the interview to UNI,the PM also dismissed accusations ofbeing anti-poor, saying his govern-ment had succeeded in ushering inthe poll promise of 'achche din (good

days) during its one year in office.Good days have arrived but somepeople are trying to belittle the workdone by us," he said.

Modi defended his government ona controversial land acquisition billthat the Opposition has called anti-farmer, saying such criticism waspolitically motivated and that the NDAhad corrected serious flaws in theUPA-era legislation. ''Our bill focuseson benefitting the farmers and balanc-ing the long-term interests of thenation,'' he said.

The PM also attacked theCongress, saying everybody knewwhere the country stood after 60years of governance by the party.''They (Congress) have been sustain-ing their politics only in the name ofpoor but what have they actuallydone?" he asked.

He alleged large-scale corruptionat various levels of government gaverise to scandals on a regular basiswhen the UPA was in power. ''Our pre-cious natural resources were goinginto the hands of a chosen few.' Therewas policy paralysis in the govern-ment and the country was despondentand disappointed. We have given aclean, transparent and efficient gov-ernment, he said.

India would buy only 36Rafale warplanes fromFrance, defence minister

Manohar Parrikar saidSunday, ruling out the possibil-ity of acquiring more of thesefighters for the air force that isbattling a depleted fleet. Theminister said the previous gov-ernments proposed $25-bil-lion deal for 126 Rafales waseconomically unviable. Weare not buying the rest. We areonly buying the direct 36, thePTI quoted Parrikar as saying.

The comments are con-trary to the ministers recentposition that India could buymore Rafale fighters tostrengthen the Indian AirForce. New Delhi had in Aprilscrapped the Rafale deal -billed as one of biggest in thecountry -- more than threeyears after Dassault, the man-ufacturer of the fighter jet, wasdeclared the lowest bidder, with Prime Minister NarendraModi opting to buy 36 of theseplanes in a fly-away condition

through a government-to-gov-ernment deal. n an interview toHT on April 14, Parrikar said, Ifeel that some more Rafalejets maybe required but needto figure out how we acquirethem but how many willhinge on the cost factor. Thedeal for 126 fighters was tooexpensive and would havescuttled other modernisationplans, the minister saidSunday.

Would there be anymoney for any other work? Ialso feel like having a BMWand Mercedes. But I dontbecause I cant afford it. First,I cant afford it and second, Idont need it. So, 126 Rafaleswas economically unviable. Itwas not required, the ministertold the news agency. Duringhis visit to France last month,Prime Minister Narendra Modiannounced the decision to buy36 of the Rafale jets in a fly-away condition under a gov-ernment-to-government (G2G)contract.

ISLAMABAD: Najam Sethi, whowas the caretaker chief ministerof Punjab during the 2013 elec-tions, conceded before the pollinquiry commission on Mondaythat his powers as the chief exec-utive of the province had startedslipping away seven to 10 daysbefore the May 11 elections.

He said he had stated this inhis talk show Aapas Ki Baat ona private television on July 5 thatyear. Besides, 15 days before theend of his tenure as the caretakerCM on June 6, bureaucracy hadstarted reporting to Model Town,an obvious reference to ShahbazSharif who later took over aschief minister.Mr Sethi wascross-examined by counselAbdul Hafeez Pirzada of thePakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, ShahidHamid of the PML-N and SalmanAkram Raja of the ElectionCommission before the three-judge inquiry commission head-ed by Chief Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk.

Mr Sethi said he had presidedover the last cabinet meeting onApril 25, 2013 15 days beforethe elections. Surprisingly, noneof the counsel questioned himabout the so-called 35 punc-tures relating to allegations lev-

elled by Imran Khan and otherleaders of the PTI that he (MrSethi) had manipulated the elec-tion results in at least 35 con-stituencies.

Later in a Twitter message,Mr Sethi said: PTIs Mr Pirzadadid not ask even one questionfrom me in Judicial Comm todayregarding 35 pentures (sic)! Why? Because it is a big lie.

During the proceedings, thePTI surprised the commissioninvestigating allegations of sys-tematic rigging in the 2013 elec-tions when its counsel said hemight cross-examine the partyschief. I may also cross-examineImran Khan after the release ofall documents by the ElectionCommission of Pakistan (ECP),Hafeez Pirzada said. The sug-gestion came after the comple-tion of testimonies of Najam Sethiand anchorperson Hamid Mir the last two persons on PTIs listof witnesses. But the commissionasked the counsel to submit anapplication stating the relevanceof cross-examination of Mr Khanand said it would take a decisionon the matter later. Referring toapprehensions expressed by thePakistan Peoples PartyParliamentarians (PPPP) in its

application over alleged manipu-lation of results of the election inPunjab and KhyberPakhtunkhwa, Mr Pirzada saidthe PTI chief had no objection tothe opening of all polling bags inKP. On May 29, the commissionhad asked the PTI counsel to getinstructions from Mr Khan on thePPPP application.

Najam Sethi said on Mondaythat he had been appointedchairman of the Pakistan CricketBoard (PCB) on June 21, 2013,by its patron, the prime minister, and admitted that one of hisnieces had been elected MNA ona reserved seat on a PML-N tick-et. He admitted that as chief min-ister he had reshuffled the entire

Punjab bureaucracy, except foursecretaries, to ensure fairness inthe elections. Javed Iqbal was hisfirst choice as chief secretary, and he now serves as Pakistansrepresentative at the IMF inWashington DC. But, Mr Sethisaid, when the ECP had appoint-ed Qamar Zaman Chaudhry(incumbent chairman of NAB), MrKhan objected to it. He said hehad persuaded the then chiefelection commissioner to with-draw the name and also soughtapproval of Mr Khan for JavedIqbal who graciously agreed.

Soon after assuming theoffice, he said, he had metChaudhry Shujaat Hussain,Pervaiz Ellahi, Nawaz Sharif,

Shahbaz Sharif, Imran Khan andleaders of the PPP. He said hehad received phone calls from MrKhan once or twice andaddressed the problems the lat-ter was facing during his electioncampaigns. Mr Sethi said thatalthough he was not in contactwith Nawaz Sharif, he had con-veyed security concerns abouthis electioneering but the latterdid not agree to cancel his rallies.Similar concerns were conveyedto Mr Khan, but he also declinednot to hold rallies.

Mr Sethi said he had beenarrested in 1999 by the govern-ment of then prime ministerNawaz Sharif but released on theorders of then chief justice of theSupreme Court. Mr Pirzada wasthe main pillar of support duringthose trying days, he added. TVanchorperson Hamid Mir createdsome ripples when he presentedthe original ballot book No1285relating to the NA-223 con-stituency in Sindhs TandoAllahyar, a property of the ECP.He said he had shown the bookin one of his talk shows but no-one came to collect it from him.Abdus Sattar Bachani won theseat, defeating PML-Ns DrRaheela Magsi. When Barrister

Aitzaz Ahsan of the PPP askedMr Mir to name the person whohad provided him the ballot book,he said it was a privileged infor-mation. When Hamid Mir said hehad no political commitment toany party he was shown threevideo clips of his talks shows andhe admitted that Shah AbdulAziz, a losing candidate in a KPconstituency where a PTI candi-date had won the elections, hadbrought a sack of ballot papers, saying these ballots should nothave come to him. He admittedthat he had cited instances in histalk shows that the elections hadbeen rigged in the four provincesas well as tribal areas and alsomentioned constituencies whererigging had taken place. Mr Mirsaid he had mentioned a Fafenreport in one of the programmesrelating to the polling of 100 to300 per cent votes in excess tothe registered number of votes incertain polling stations, but it waslater clarified by the ECP andFafen. He said he had also men-tioned in a programme that thepolling officer in PB-46 Kharan(Balochistan) was an official ofthe Frontier Corps. SanaullahBaloch was a candidate of BNPin the constituency.

KANO: Thirteen people werekilled on Tuesday in a suicideattack at a busy cattle market inthe northeastern Nigerian city ofMaiduguri, the Red Cross andcivilian vigilantes battling BokoHaram said.

The blast in the Borno statecapital happened at about 1:00pm (1200 GMT) as traders werewrapping up business for theday, Shettima Bulama said in anaccount backed up by anotherlocal vigilante.

Regretting thestatement against China-Pakistan EconomicCorridor, Nawaz said it hasclearly exposed the Indiandesigns of hegemony.

You can see the state-ments given by neighbour-

I am not sure whetherlocal or foreign elementsare stirring clashesbetween people ofPakistan but they want todivide the nation and arecreating problems.

  • INTRODUCTION

    om ajnana-timirand-hasya

    jnananjana-salakayacaksur unmilitam yena

    tasmai sri-gurave namah

I was born in the dark-est ignorance, and my

spiritual master openedmy eyes with the torch

of knowledge. I offer myrespectful obeisances

    unto him.

Bhagavad-gita is alsoknown as Gitopanishad. Itis the essence of Vedicknowledge and one of themost importantUpanishads in Vedic litera-ture. Of course there aremany commentaries inEnglish on the Bhagavad-gita, and one may questionthe necessity for anotherone. This present editioncan be explained in the fol-lowing way. Recently anAmerican lady asked meto recommend an Englishtranslation of Bhagavad-gita. Of course in Americathere are so many editionsof Bhagavad-gita availablein English, but as far as Ihave seen, not only inAmerica but also in India, none of them can be strict-ly said to be authoritativebecause in almost everyone of them the commen-tator has expressed hisown opinions withouttouching the spirit ofBhagavad-gita as it is.

The spirit of Bhagavad-gita is mentioned inBhagavad-gita itself. It isjust like this: If we want totake a particular medicine, then we have to follow thedirections written on thelabel. We cannot take themedicine according to ourown whim or the directionof a friend. It must be takenaccording to the directionson the label or the direc-tions given by a physician.Similarly, Bhagavad-gitashould be taken or accept-ed as it is directed by thespeaker Himself. Thespeaker of Bhagavad-gitais Lord Sri Krishna. He ismentioned on every pageof Bhagavad-gita as theSupreme Personality ofGodhead, Bhagavan. Ofcourse the word bhagavansometimes refers to anypowerful person or anypowerful demigod, andcertainly here bhagavandesignates Lord SriKrishna as a great person-ality, but at the same timewe should know that LordSri Krishna is the SupremePersonality of Godhead,as is confirmed by all greatacaryas (spiritual masters)like Shankaracarya,R a m a n u j a c a r y a ,Madhvacarya, NimbarkaSvami, Sri CaitanyaMahaprabhu and many

other authorities of Vedicknowledge in India. TheLord Himself also estab-lishes Himself as theSupreme Personality ofGodhead in the Bhagavad-gita, and He is accepted assuch in the Brahma-samhi-ta and all the Puranas, especially the Srimad-Bhagavatam, known asthe Bhagavata Purana(krishnas tu bhagavansvayam). Therefore weshould take Bhagavad-gita

as it is directed by thePersonality of GodheadHimself. In the FourthChapter of the Gita (4.13)the Lord says:

    imam vivasvate yogamproktavan aham

    avyayamvivasvan manave prahamanur iksvakave bravit

    evam parampara-prap-tam

    imam rajarsayo viduhsa kaleneha mahata

    yogo nastah parantapa

sa evayam maya te dyayogah proktah

    puratanah

bhakto si me sakha cetirahasyam hy etad utta-

    mam

Here the Lord informsArjuna that this system ofyoga, the Bhagavad-gita,was first spoken to thesun-god, and the sun-godexplained it to Manu, andManu explained it toIkshavaku, and in that way,by disciplic succession, one speaker after another, this yoga system has been

coming down. But in thecourse of time it hasbecome lost.Consequently the Lord hasto speak it again, this timeto Arjuna on the Battlefieldof Kurukshetra.

He tells Arjuna that Heis relating this supremesecret to him becauseArjuna is His devotee andHis friend. The purport ofthis is that Bhagavad-gitais a treatise which is espe-cially meant for the devo-tee of the Lord. There arethree classes of transcen-dentalists, namely thejnani, the yogi and thebhakta, or the impersonal-ist, the meditator and the

devotee. Here the Lordclearly tells Arjuna that Heis making him the firstreceiver of a newparampara (disciplic suc-cession) because the oldsuccession was broken. Itwas the Lords wish, there-fore, to establish anotherparampara in the sameline of thought that wascoming down from thesun-god to others, and itwas His wish that Histeaching be distributed

anew by Arjuna. He want-ed Arjuna to become theauthority in understandingthe Bhagavad-gita. So wesee that Bhagavad-gita isinstructed to Arjuna espe-cially because Arjuna wasa devotee of the Lord, adirect student of Krishna, and His intimate friend. Therefore Bhagavad-gitais best understood by aperson who has qualitiessimilar to Arjunas. That isto say he must be a devo-tee in a direct relationshipwith the Lord. As soon asone becomes a devotee ofthe Lord, he also has adirect relationship with theLord. That is a very elabo-

rate subject matter, butbriefly it can be stated thata devotee is in a relation-ship with the SupremePersonality of Godhead inone of five different ways:

    One may be a devotee ina passive state;

    One may be a devotee inan active state;

    One may be a devoteeas a friend;

    One may be a devoteeas a parent;

One may be a devoteeas a conjugal lover.

Arjuna was in a relation-ship with the Lord as

friend. Of course there is agulf of difference betweenthis friendship and thefriendship found in thematerial world. This is tran-scendental friendship, which cannot be had byeveryone. Of courseeveryone has a particularrelationship with the Lord, and that relationship isevoked by the perfection ofdevotional service. But inthe present status of ourlife, not only have we for-gotten the Supreme Lord, but we have forgotten oureternal relationship withthe Lord. Every livingbeing, out of the many, many billions and trillions

of living beings, has a par-ticular relationship with theLord eternally. That iscalled svarupa. By theprocess of devotional serv-ice, one can revive thatsvarupa, and that stage iscalled svarupa-siddhiperfection of ones consti-tutional position. So Arjunawas a devotee, and hewas in touch with theSupreme Lord in friend-ship.

How Arjuna acceptedthis Bhagavad-gita shouldbe noted. His manner ofacceptance is given in theTenth Chapter (10.1214):

    arjuna uvacaparam brahma param

    dhamapavitram paramam bha-

    vanpurusham sasvatam

    divyamadi-devam ajam vibhum

ahus tvam rsayah sarvedevarsir naradas tatha

asito devalo vyasahsvayam caiva bravisi me

sarvam etad rtam manyeyan mam vadasi kesha-

    vana hi te bhagavan vyak-

    timvidur deva na danavah

Arjuna said: You arethe Supreme Personalityof Godhead, the ultimateabode, the purest, theAbsolute Truth. You arethe eternal, transcenden-tal, original person, theunborn, the greatest. Allthe great sages such asNarada, Asita, Devala, andVyasa confirm this truthabout You, and now YouYourself are declaring it tome. O Krishna, I totallyaccept as truth all that Youhave told me. Neither thedemigods nor the demons,O Lord, can understandYour personality.

After hearingBhagavad-gita from theSupreme Personality ofGodhead, Arjuna acceptedKrishna as param brahma, the Supreme Brahman.Every living being isBrahman, but the supremeliving being, or theSupreme Personality ofGodhead, is the SupremeBrahman. Param dhamameans that He is thesupreme rest or abode ofeverything; pavitrammeans that He is pure, untainted by material con-tamination; purushammeans that He is thesupreme enjoyer; sas-vatam, original; divyam, transcendental; adi-devam, the SupremePersonality of Godhead;ajam, the unborn; and vib-hum, the greatest.

Now one may think thatbecause Krishna was thefriend of Arjuna, Arjuna CONTINUES IN NEXT ISSUE

Police in Bangladeshhave charged theowner of the Rana

Plaza complex with murderover the building's collapsein 2013, killing more than1,100 people.

Sohel Rana and morethan a dozen governmentofficials are among 42 peo-ple to face charges.

They are accused ofignoring warnings not toallow workers into the build-ing the day before it col-lapsed. It was the worstindustrial disaster in thecountry's history - andprompted criticism of globalretail practices. The 41people accused of murder, who include owners of fac-tories housed in the com-plex and government offi-cials, initially faced chargesof culpable homicide.Prosecutors say that theseriousness of the accidentmeant that the chargeshave been upgraded tomurder. If convicted, defen-dants face the death penal-ty.

Eighteen people, includ-ing 17 of those chargedwith murder, have beencharged with building codeviolation. The prosecutionsays that Mr Rana shouldnow appoint a lawyer

ahead of the trial process.A court hearing is due totake place on 28 June todecide further proceedings. The fact that it has takenmore than two years tobring formal charges inrelation to the factory col-lapse has led to allegationsthat officers dawdled duringthe investigation process.

Questions have beenraised about the govern-ment's willingness to bringthe guilty to justice Factoryowners in Bangladeshhave political power to influ-ence government policy. But investigators argue thatit has not been an easytask. They have had torecord statements frommore than 1,200 peopleincluding injured factoryworkers, government offi-cials and experts.

Furthermore they havebeen under pressure fromsome politicians, officialsand factory owners whohave tried to hinder theirinvestigation and preventcertain people from beingcharged.

What is happening nowis unprecedented - no-onein the past has been pun-ished for accidents at gar-ment factories. But such isthe seriousness of the dis-aster - it is alleged that thefactory was a death trap -there is no way this casecould have been ignored.Public ProsecutorKhandaker Abdul Mannantold the BBC that the gov-ernment's permission wasrequired to include thenames of officials in the listof those charge, which hedescribed as "a long proce-

dure". Mr Rana was arrest-ed days after the disasteras he attempted to flee toIndia.

The building code viola-tion charges allege thatthree extra stories wereadded to the factory. Thefactory, in Savar, some30km (20 miles) outsideDhaka, collapsed suddenlyon 24 April 2013. More than2,500 people were rescuedalive, some suffering fromterrible injuries. The disas-ter drew attention to thepoor working conditions inBangladesh's garmentindustry, one of the world'slargest.
