Geography

• Fiji is an archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean. Fiji is a brilliant looking tropical country in the South Pacific with beautiful beaches, tropical rainforests, rugged highlands and mountains, some of these reaching 1300m tall and over.

Climate and Weather

• Maximum temperatures in Fiji rarely move out of the 31C to 26C range all year long.

• Winds over Fiji are mostly light or medium; strong winds are far less common and are most likely to occur in June and November.

• Fiji experiences a wet season from (November to April) reaching 6000mm in the mountains.

Marine environment

•There are over 390 coral species and over 1200 varieties of fish and many invertebrates in the waters of Fiji. Mangrove and seagrass habitats act as breeding and feeding grounds for the many species of fish, invertebrates, reptiles and seabirds of this habitat.

Major cities

• There are two major cities in Fiji: Nadi and Suva. Nadi is located on the west coast of Viti Levu and is home to the Fiji International Airport. Suva is located on Viti Levu's east coast and is home to the University of the South Pacific.

Flora

• Fiji’s tropical climate, along with its geographic location in the Pacific Ocean, make it possible for over 113 kinds of unique flora.

• The beaches of Fiji are covered by a variety of pine trees, such as silver, fishtail, fantail, umbrella and the very useful coconut palm. Coconut palms are strong and can stand the salty waters of the beaches and provides Fiji with one of its most common manufacturing resource – coconut oil – which is used to make cosmetics, soap and margarine.

Fauna

• The Fiji fauna has many species of birds, reptiles and marine life.

• There are thirty species of reptiles like Iguana the main species. The waters of the south pacific offer a home for many Dolphins, Rays and Reef Sharks.

• Coral reefs have a great marine life including sea snakes, anemone and interesting fish life and five species of turtle.
