CRTC Wireless Code Now Applies To AllCustomers: What You Need To Know

Only customers with contracts signed between June 3 and Dec. 2, 2013, will pay cancellation fee

Everyone with a three-year wirelessontract will be able to break their

agreement as of Wednesday without the

hefty cancellation fees often mandatedby carriers thanks to new regulations. The Canadian Radio-television andTelecommunications Commission'swireless code took effect on Dec. 2,2013, but will apply to all wirelessontracts signed as of June 3, 2013.

Canada's wireless carriers attemptedo prevent the code from applying to

people with three-year wireless contractshat would not have expired by June 3.

The carriers lost a Federal Court appealn May when the court ruled that the

CRTC can make the code applicable to

hose contracts even if it interferes withhe rights of mobile carriers.

While all customers will be able to walkaway from their three-year contracts asof Wednesday regardless of when theyxpire, some will still have to pay a smallancellation fee if they choose to do so.Most customers on three-year contracts

will not be required to pay cancellationees," the Commissioner for Complaintsor Telecommunications Howard Makeraid in a statement. "And, if they do, the

amount they will have to pay has been

imited by the code."Contracts started before June 3, 2013People with three-year contracts thathave lasted more than two years can

cancel their plans without paying anycancellation fees, according to CCTS.This applies to anyone who signed a

three-year contract before June 3, 2013.The wireless code mandates that carrierscan't charge cancellation fees after 24months.Contracts started June 3, 2013, to Dec.2, 2013However, not everyone has held theircontract for more than two years.People who started their contract

between June 3 and Dec. 2, 2013, cancancel their contracts. But they will haveto pay at most $50 to do so.The carrier will calculate 10 per centof "the minimum monthly charge for

the remaining months of the contract,"according to CCTS.Contracts started after June 3, 2013, witha device subsidySome individuals may have contractsthat came with a device subsidy, meaningthe carrier offered a cellphone at areduced price and built payments intothe contract to make up the difference.Carriers are able to recover some of theremaining device costs from people whowant to cancel their contracts that weresigned between June 3 and Dec. 2, 2013.

The CCTS offers a formula forcalculating that cancellation fee. Carrierswill have to divide the original devicesubsidy amount by 24 months, which

is the amount of time the code allocarriers to recoup a device subsiThey will then multiply that number

the number of months the contract already lasted, and then subtract it frthe original device subsidy amount. For example, a three-year contract staron Nov. 5, 2013 with a device subsidy$240 cancelled on June 10 would costcustomer a $40 early cancellation fee.Contracts started after Dec. 2, 2013All wireless code protections alreapply to people who entered icontracts after Dec. 2, 2013.These protections, in addition to $0 eacancellation fees after two years, incluallowing customers to:

Cancel a new contract and return  phone at no cost (provided customstay within usage limits) within 15 dif they are unhappy with service.Refuse changes to key contract terand conditions, including services

prices, for the contract's duration.Get a plain language summary services.Cap excess data charges above plimits at $50 a month. There are some concerns these chanmay raise the price of smartphones in

short term. With customers being ablwalk away from three-year contracts a24 months without a penalty, there willittle sense in offering longer-term dea

a median follow-up of 67 months wasable to address some of the limitationsof earlier studies on the connectionbetween OSA and diabetes," lead authorTetyana Kendzerska, MD, PhD, of theUniversity of Toronto said.We found that among patients with

OSA, the initial severity of the diseasepredicted the subsequent risk for incidentdiabetes," Kendzerska said.

The study included 8,678 adults withsuspected OSA without diabetes at

baseline who underwent a diagnosticsleep study between 1994 and 2010 andwere followed through May 2011 using

provincial health administrative data toexamine the occurrence of diabetes.Sleep apnea severity was assessed withthe apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), whichindicates severity based on the numberof apneas (complete cessation of airow)and hypopneas (partial cessation ofairow) per hour of sleep. Patients wereclassied as not having OSA, or havingmild, moderate or severe OSA.During follow-up, 1,017 (11.7 percent)

patients developed diabetes. In analyses adjusting for known risk

factors for diabetes, including age, s body mass index, neck circumferensmoking, income status comorbidities at baseline, patients wan AHI greater than 30 had a 30 perc

higher risk of developing diabetes ththose with an AHI less than 5.Patients with mild or moderate OSA a 23 percent increased risk of developdiabetes.Other risk factors for diabetes incluAHI during rapid eye movemsleep and measures of the physioloconsequences of OSA, including oxydesaturation, sleep deprivation activation of the sympathetic nervsystem, as indicated by a higher mheart rate during sleep.

Why The Doctor Asks For A Urine Samplet's probably safe to say that no one reallyikes giving a urine sample. But the facts that few tests can match the routine

urine analysis for telling your doctorabout what's going on inside your body. The bladder can hold almost 2 cups ofurine for two to ve hours comfortably, and excretes about 2 quarts of wasteproducts and additional water daily. And just as you use a dipstick to check

your car's engine oil, doctors rely on apecially treated "dipstick," a plastictick that has segments imbedded with

different chemical indicators on it, toest urine. Unusual amounts of certainubstances in your urine can indicateonditions ranging from minor urinaryract infections to diabetes and other

more serious conditions. One portion of the dipstick, for instance, measures the specic gravity (a measureof the amount of substances dissolvedn the urine). The higher the specic

gravity, the more concentrated the urines. Using a numerical scale, the dipstick

shows whether you're drinking enoughuids and how well your kidneys areltering wastes from your body. Veryconcentrated urine suggests you are

probably not drinking enough uids, making it harder for your body to ushwastes. Urine is normally darker - moreconcentrated - in the morning, becauseyour body's been storing wastes all night. The dipstick registers the presence of

a variety of chemicals that the kidneyslter, such as glucose (sugar) or minerals.Healthy people generally don't excretesugar in their urine. Its presence maymean that you have diabetes or anothercondition that prevents your body fromefciently converting blood sugar intoenergy. The urine test also can indicate infections

by measuring nitrites and leukocytes.Bacteria produce an enzyme that convertsnitrates, which are normally presentin urine to nitrites. Leukocytes are the

white blood cells that ght infection. The presence of either indicates that

your body may be ghting an infectin the bladder or somewhere else alothe urinary tract. They also can indicsomething even more serious, sucha tumor, but further tests are neededconrm these ndings. The dipstick gauges protein and levels. Urine shouldn't contain muif any, protein, although some perfenormal people do excrete tiny amou

Urine pH, or acidity, normally ran between 4.5 and 8, with most peopurine falling between 5.5 and 6Signicantly high protein or pH levcan suggest kidney or other redysfunction.Ketones can be detected by dipsticThey are substances produced whenis used by the body for energy. Thare eliminated from the body in urine. Large amounts of urinary ketoindicate a diet low in carbohydrastarvation, or, in a person with diabe

a dangerous condition known as diabketoacidosis.

Eat Balanced Diet To Prevent Hearing LosEvery time you hit the dance oor tohe sound of loud music, you may riskosing your capacity to hear. But those

with a substandard diet could be morevulnerable.People with healthy diets who eat

adequate fruit and vegetables, havebetter hearing thresholds than people

with a poor diet, according to largepopulation databases," Colleen Le Prell,

professor at Florida University, wasquoted as saying.Studies on animals have shown thatdietary supplements such as vitaminsA, C, E and magnesium can preventhearing loss by reducing inammationand swelling and increasing the bloodsupply to the inner ear.

Results are now expected next monthof two recent clinical trials in humans

that have studied whether dietsupplements and a new drug can prothearing after exposure to a loud noiseThis may mean we will be able to proour ears by popping a vitamin pill befgoing out clubbing, as reported. However, experts warned that howeeffective a pill turns out to be, no

Sepp Blatter Resigns As FIFA PresidentAmid Corruption Scandal

Sepp Blatter has resigned as presidentof FIFA in a stunning capitulation toritics as a mounting corruption scandalngulfed world football's governing

body.

I don't feel I have a mandate from thentire world of football," Blatter, who

deantly rejected calls to quit for severalmonths, calmly told a press conferenceat FIFA's Zurich headquarters. The 79-year-old Swiss ofcial, FIFApresident for 17 years and only re-lected last Friday, said he would remainn charge until a special congress canhoose a new leader.I felt compelled to stand for re-election,

as I believed that this was the best thingor the organisation," he said on a day

n which new revelations about doubtfulpayments put pressure on the governingbody. That election is over but FIFA'shallenges are not. FIFA needs a

profound overhaul," Blatter said. While I have a mandate from the

membership of FIFA, I do not feel thathave a mandate from the entire world

of football — the fans, the players, thelubs, the people who live, breathe andove football as much as we all do at

FIFA.This is why I will call an extraordinary

ongress to be held as soon as possible,or a new president to be elected toollow me."

Critics welcome Blatter's decisionCritics were quick to welcome Blatter'shock announcement, though some

praised him.It was a difcult decision, a brave

decision, and the right decision," saidUEFA president Michel Platini, aormer ally who last week told the FIFA

president to his face that he should leave.English Football Association chief Greg

Dyke, one of the ercest criticis of theFIFA leader, said the resignation wasbrilliant for world football."Who got him? Who shot him? What

happened between then (Friday) andnow?" he said.We haven't had a squeaky clean

president for many, many years. This ishe start of something new. He's not been honourable in years. Now

he's gone — let's celebrate."British secretary of state for culture, media and sport John Whittingdale toldhe BBC: "I hope football can now come

ogether."

"The chasm was created by Blatterwanting to hang on," he said."Europe was supporting an alternativecandidate and as long as he was thereit was going to be difcult to move

forward."I now hope everyone can come togetherto make the changes required."Russian sports minister Vitaly Mutko,a member of the FIFA executive and

both a key gure in the 2018 WorldCup and supporter of Blatter's, said theresignation came as a "complete shock"

but was intended to preserve FIFA'sunity."Blatter's statement makes it quite clearthat he wants to keep FIFA united," hesaid.

"He is looking for the continuation ofFIFA reforms."FIFA rocked by US and SwissinvestigationsThe arrest of seven FIFA ofcials in aZurich hotel last week, as part of a UScorruption inquiry, and a Swiss policeinvestigation into the award of the 2018and 2022 World Cup to Russia and Qatar

proved the nal straw. The seven are among 14 footballofcials and sports marketing executivesaccused by US prosecutors over morethan $US150 million in bribes.

Blatter had repeatedly pleaded hisinnocence and that of FIFA over thecorruption."The executive committee includesrepresentatives of confederations overwhom we have no control, but for whoseactions FIFA is held responsible. Weneed deep-rooted structural change," hereafrmed in his statement. He added that as he would not stand inthe election, "I shall be able to focuson driving far-reaching, fundamentalreforms that transcend our previous

efforts."The special congress cannot be held until between December 2015 and March2016, according to Domenico Scala, chairman of FIFA's independent auditand compliance committee.Prince Ali bin al Hussein, who challengedBlatter in last Friday's vote, immediatelyannounced that he will be a candidate totake over. The Jordanian prince withdrew from therace after the rst round of voting at theZurich congress.Blatter beat him by 133 votes to 73 in the

rst round, with rock-solid support from

Asia and Africa seeing him through.Blatter has been with FIFA for years, starting as a marketing ofc

becoming secretary general in 1981  president in 1998, taking over from J

Havelange, whose long reign was aovershadowed by scandal. The Swiss ofcial took over international federation facing nandifculties and turned it into a mu

billion dollar operation. In the four years between the 2010 a2014 World Cups, FIFA made $US

billion. The organisation has a cmountain of $US1.5 billion. But since the rst day, scandal has ne

been far from his ofce. There wallegations over the vote that elec

him in 1998 and the collapse of the Isports marketing giant also triggerecrisis at FIFA.The past four years have been toughest however. The day after December 2010 vote that awarded 2018 and 2022 World Cups triggewidespread accusations of bribery.Qatar has strongly denied wrongdoing but one senior Qaofcial, a FIFA vice president, w

banned for life amid accusations thatgave bribes.Swiss police investigating the award

the 2018 and 2022 tournaments raithe FIFA headquarters last week wthe arrests were being carried out aluxury city hotel."It is my deep care for FIFA andinterests, which I hold very dear, thas led me to take this decision," Blasaid."What matters to me more than anythis that when all of this is over, footbathe winner."Blatter, stolid throughout the 10-minappearance, then shook the hand o

When Bollywood Stars Talked About TheiEx-Lovers

With Salman Khan often mentioning ex-ame Katrina Kaif at every opportunity he gets, we take a look at other formelovers of Bollywood who still talk about each other...

Maintaining relationships is a demandingask. Even more challenging is getting

out of a split. They say that the wisehing to do is forget the past and move

on, but it is only easier said than done. While there are many who leave noopportunity to take a dig at their ex-ames, there are some who have movedon with their lives and maintain a cordialelation with them.

Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif

Take for example, Salman Khan whos known to speak his mind and severalnstances in the past are proof. The actor

doesn't shy away from speaking aboutx-girlfriend Katrina Kaif either. Last

year, the actor took a dig at Katrina whenhe hesitated to share the stage with him

during his sister Arpita Khan's sangeeteremony. Reportedly, Salman hasaid: Ok ne, not Katrina Kaif. Katrina

Kapoor, please come on stage. Main kyakaroon.

gave you a chance to become Katrina

Khan, but you chose to be KatrinaKapoor. This wasn't the only time whenhe openly spoke about Kat. Recently, while the actor was in Kashmir to shootor 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan', he tweeted about

how beautiful Kashmir is and that Katrinaoo belongs to the state. Last weekend as

well, at an award ceremony in Dubai heent the crowd roaring in delight when

he said that he believes that he makes thebest on-screen pair with Katrina Kaif.Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh

Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharmawho apparently began seeing each otherduring 'Band Baaja Baaraat' have never

admitted to being in a relationship, but till today even after working with

other stars and dating other people canconstantly be seen referring to each other. In an interview last month, the actor saidthat it was great uniting with her in 'DilDhadakne Do' and that she will always

be special for him. Anushka on the otherhand said that Ranveer is now a calmerand a less anxious person as comparedto his 'Band Baaja Baaraat' days. Also, during the controversial roast sessionwith Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor, the duo took all digs at their relationshipin its stride.

Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone

Post her break-up with Ranbir Kapoor,

Deepika Padukone may have been linto other actors and sport personali

Anupam Kher who was all set to reunitewith director Sanjay Gupta after a gap ofwo decades in 'Jazbaa' is now no longer

Vancouver Canucks: The Great TradeRobbery

The 1991 NHL Draft on the surfaceappeared to be an uneventful one for theVancouver Canucks. Their highest draftpick that year was Canadian wingerAlek Stojanov. Taken as the 7th overallpick, Stojanov had shown great promisewhile playing for the Hamilton Dukes inhe OHL. A tough, physically imposingorward, he seemed a good t for Pat

Quinn’s side. But there was one selectionnine places below that would make a keydifference in the Canucks future. Withhe 16th overall pick, the Pittsburgh

Penguins selected Swedish winger

Markus Naslund. What would transpirerom this affair would be become one ofhe most lopsided trades in NHL history.

Despite his previous offensivehowcasing, Stojanov looked out of

his element very quickly in the NHL.

A shoulder injury kept him out of theentire 1993-94 season. In 1994-95, hemade only four appearances in the NHL.Despite some impressive showings forAHL afliate, Syracuse Crunch, hisgoal scoring talents seemed to dry up.By 1996, Stojanov had been pushedinto more of an enforcer role. His pointstotal though was troubling the Canucksmanagement because in 62 regularseason games, he had registered only asingle assist.Over in Pennsylvania, Naslund had beenfaring little better. His rst two seasons

had brought about only 15 points. Hisnatural goalscoring seemed to havevanished and the once promising talentwas beginning to look like a bust. The1995-96 season appeared to bring about achange as Naslund notched up 52 points.

But his production towards the end ofyear slowed, which appeared to be nal nail in the cofn. Despite havhigh hopes for him to match JaroJagr, trade rumors were persistent in

nal year.March 20, 1996 is a day that will alw

be well remembered in Canucks histoOn this day, Naslund was traded to Canucks in exchange for Stojanov. Uparriving in British Columbia, he wnally able to make use of the talentdisplayed with Modo in Sweden. By time he departed Vancouver in 2008held a franchise high points total of (since surpassed by Henrik and DanSedin). Naslund became the Canucks ever European captain in 2000, wh

he held until his departure. AlongsBrendan Morrison and Todd Bertuthe three formed the productive ‘WCoast Express Line’ which tormen

NHL defences between 2001-2005.Alek Stojanov however, was a disafor the Penguins, scoring only 6 pointhis two seasons. His 222 penalty minuwould be his only career high. He wospend the remainder of his career playin the minor leagues before calling tion his career at just 29 years old. 24 yeon this trade has proven to be one twas a big mismatch. Naslund’s num

19 now hangs proudly from the raftof the Rogers Arena. While Stojanoname regularly appears in the all tdraft bust lists! From out of nothiVancouver turned a potential problinto a great long term solution.
