• A file is a collection of related data stored on a lasting medium, such as a hard disk.
• A file can be an application program or the product of an application.
– Digital cameras create photo files– Word processing creates document files
• The original form the file is saved in is referred to as the native format.
File NamesFile Names
• Each file is identified by a unique file name.
• When a new document is created, a temporary, generic file name is created.– Untitled-1 or Document1
• Filename extensions are automatically added.
FoldersFolders
• Folders are used to organize commonly related files.
Intranet, Extranet, InternetIntranet, Extranet, Internet
• Intranet– Used by a single corporation
• Extranet– Extends the intranet by providing various levels of
accessibility
• Internet– Largest and most widely accessed network—a
world-wide network of computers not controlled by one organization.
