Warm Up Discussion

Tomorrow is the federal election for the United States of America.

We had a discussion before about “liberal” versus “conservative” views of life.

Take 2-3 minutes to draw two columns and list as many items as you recall about the differences between these two views of governing.

American Presidential Election Basics

• All American citizens 18 years and over can vote in the presidential election (every 4 years) – usually only about 50% of eligible voters turn out

Vote for president/vice-president team – multi-party system, but 2 major parties (Democratic and Republican)

Vote in state of residence (50 states in the USA) – the candidate with the most votes in the state will “win” the state.

Page 5: Filial Piety and Retirement

• Each state represents a certain number of “Electoral Votes”, based on population

• If you “win” a state, you win that state’s “electoral votes”; if you win the most electoral votes, you win the election

2008:Obama – 365 electoral votes;McCain – 173 electoral votes

Filial Piety in the World• “Children, obey your parents in the Lord; for this is right.

Honor thy father and mother.”- Cited in the Bible 8 times.

• “The voice of parents is the voice of gods, for to their children they are heaven’s lieutenants.” Shakespeare, English playwright (1564-1616)

• “Let parents bequeath to their children not riches, but the spirit of reverence.” Plato, Greek philosopher (427-347 BC)

• “A mother is a mother still, The holiest thing alive.” Samuel Taylor Coleridge, English poet, philosopher (1772-1834)

• ““Honour thy father and thy mother” stands written among the three laws of most revered righteousness” Aeschylus, Greek playwright (525-456 BC)

In contrast,…• “There is something underdeveloped about parents who

demand respect. Obviously, they have failed to inspire love in their children, and so they demand an inferior substitute. Parents who are really fair and square with their children do not require respect. If you want to be respected by your child, act in such a manner that the respect comes naturally- which means deservedly- and not because your child fears reprisal.” A.S. Neill, Scottish educator (1883-1973)

• “Every father should remember that one day his son will follow his example instead of his advice.” Charles F. Kettering, American businessman (1876-1958)
