Anglers from the Bacoor Association held their 6th Annual Bacoor Fishing Derby last weekend at Selkirk Park. Over 90 anglers lined the banks of the Red River to compete in the annual fishing event for cash prizes and bragging rights. The derby also raises fund for the association’s Youth Bursary Program. Blasting Down Garbage Hill

It's winter and it's time to have a blast! From epic toboggan hills and frozen ponds, there's

no shortage of winter activities for the entire family in Winnipeg. Grab you snow pants, mitts and hot pockets and embrace the beauty of winter.

It's officially known as Westview Park and I grew up calling it "Garbage Hill." The park is located north of Polo Park Shopping Centre and was once a city landfill that is now one of several tobogganing hotspots in Winnipeg. The north side of Westview Park is where all the action happens. Old rubber tires line the metal fence on the north perimter of the park and act as cushions in case tobogganers feel a need for racing down the hill without brakes.

Thanks to El Nino and a very mild winter in Winnipeg, the park was busy last weekend with hypercharged kids rushing down the hill in toboggans, plastic sleds, snow racers and flat pieces of cardboard. Kids and teenagers raced down the slopes as parents watched as they sipped on mugs of warmed beverages.

Garbage Hill offers a wide range of runs for everyone to enjoy. There are several small and easy hills perfectly designed for babies and toddlers. The big hill is where most of the action and fun happens. Most of it's fun, and for the time I was there shooting, there were a fair amount of epic wipeouts and the occasional tobogganer getting bowled over by other tobogganers.

Other toboggan hills in Winnipeg include Civic Park (901 Kimberley Ave.), Victoria Jason Park (255 Redonda), Harbourview Recreation Complex (1867 Springfield Road) and Westview Park (aka Garbage Hill, 1 Midland Street).

If toboggan hills aren't your thing, several city parks are home to winter slides. There are winter slides at St. Vital Park, Crescent Drive Park, Kildonan Park, Bunn's Creek Park, Fraser's Grove Park, Waterfront Drive and Whitter Park. With the exception of Waterfront Drive and Whittier Park, all winter slides have night lighting and warming areas.

While the Forks is known for the skating rings and newly

opened skating trails, the Forks is also home to a small toboggan hill and great for the babies and toddlers. There is a 1km on-land skating trail at the Forks that starts from the Rink Under the Canopy and through the Forks site. Trails connect from the hockey rink at Festival Park Stage, the pedestrian rail bridge and back to the canopy. Skate rentals at The Forks Market are also available.

An evening to remember

Last December 20, 2015, marked the day the world renown and

award-winning University of the Philippines Concert Chorus (UPCC) – or simply, “Korus” – was in Sacramento, California on the first leg of its U.S. Winter Tour. As usual, Korus presented a repertoire of music that made the audience call for an encore. And for those who have seen them perform in Sacramento two decades ago, and two years ago, their recent performance brought back fond memories of their ability to awe the crowd with their vibrant musical form.

I remember their first sojourn into Sacramento in 1996 when my wife Dolores – who was then the Chairman of the Filipiniana Foundation and UPCC’s Sacramento coordinator -- and about 20 couples and I waited for their arrival at our home. They arrived in two buses, one containing the 40 performers and the other containing their luggage.

In spite of the long travel from Washington State where they started their tour, the young U.P. college students looked refreshingly full of energy. After a welcome reception they were assigned to their host families during their stay in Sacramento.

Their performance at the Luther Burbank High School Auditorium was roundly applauded by the mostly Filipino-American crowd. A few days later, Dolores, who was then a member of the Board of Directors of the Sacramento Philharmonic Symphony, brought the UPCC performers for a joint performance of Korus and the Philharmonic Symphony and guest conductor, kabayan, Maestro Eugene Castillo.

Their maiden performance in Sacramento was a success due in part to the conductor, Prof. Reynaldo T. Paguio, whose adept orchestration of the performance was lauded resoundingly.

Two years later, UPCC was

back in Sacramento for another outstanding performance. With their successful performance in Sacramento in 1996, the turnout grew bigger.

In 1999, Prof. Paguio passed away following a surgery and from complications of diabetes.

We didn’t know what happened to UPCC after Prof. Paguio’s death. But we heard that they continued to perform in some cities near Sacramento, to wit: Vallejo and Union City. In 2013, Dolores and I attended a conference of the Northern California Sister Cities of which Dolores is Chairman of the Sacramento-Manila/Pasay City Sister Cities. We met Dr. Rozzana Aliga, the UPCC coordinator for Vallejo, who mentioned that UPCC was going to perform in Vallejo. Their next performance was in Union City. Dolores found an opening in the UPCC’s schedule and suggested that they perform in Sacramento after their performance in Union City. Dolores linked with Vice Mayor Jim Navarro, the UPCC coordinator for Union City, and they worked out a schedule. They agreed that UPCC would come in and out of Sacramento on the day of the performance, which was December 29, 2013. However, there was no venue yet. Ant the event was only six weeks away!

Fortunately, Dolores was introduced to Fr. Phil Ganir, a Filipino priest at Saint Ignatius Parish Church. It didn’t take too long to get Fr. Ganir to agree, after all Dolores and I have been loyal supporters of the Saint Ignatius Parish School where our two daughters graduated and where our five grandchildren are now going to school. We got the church as the venue for the concert… at minimal cost!

That was the time when Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda hit Tacloban City hard. Upon the recommendation of Dolores to the Board of Directors of Eskwela Natin (Our Filipino School), of which she was the President, the proceeds from the concert were donated to the typhoon victims through three non-profit relief organizations, to wit: Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), Red Cross Sacramento Chapter, and the Catholic Relief Services.

The concert was well attended. After a short reception

for the performers, they headed back to Union City. We wished they could have stayed longer and there were families who were willing to host them. But time was short.

This year, they came back and stayed longer… one week! There were eighteen performers including the conductor, Professor Janet “Jai” Sabas -Aracama. There were five host families from Sacramento and another five from Davis. They’re part of the Davis Yolo Pinoy Group, which former mayor of Davis Ruth Asmundson organized.

To my knowledge this was the first time that Sacramento and Davis community groups had worked jointly in a project of this kind. The reception committee was delegated to the Davis Yolo Pinoy Group of which a member, Dr. Rich Naval, is owner of Bravante, a St. Helena winery that caters to a select number of high-end restaurants in the Bay Area.

In addition to their concert, the UPCC performed at the Blessed Sacrament Cathedral and in several “Simbang Gabi” masses that included St. Paul, Divine Mercy and the St. Maria Gorretti Catholic Church, which was officiated by Bishop Jaime Sotto. They also participated in Maharlika Lions Club’s caroling project in several homes.

After the 5:30 AM “Simbang Gabi” at St. Maria Gorretti, the host families gave a despedida party for the performers at the beautiful country estate of Lito and Dr. Malu Bautista in Elk Grove. The others in attendance were hosts Pete and Vicki Lumbang, host Ludy Garrucho, Ludi Lapus, Joseph Stayner and Fely Villanueva, and Dolores and myself. Hosts Bert and Julie Melliza couldn’t make it due to prior commitment. We drove the performers to Vallejo where the Union City group was waiting to bring them to their next stop.

And now it’s time to say goodbye to a wonderful group who dedicated themselves to sharing the rich culture of the Filipino people. And in recognition of their talents, they received awards from all over the world, including the Grand Prix at the 6th International Krakow Choir Festival in Poland on June 14, 2015. Indeed, they have represented the Philippines

superbly as its ambassadors of goodwill.

The parting hugs and kisses evoked a poignant mixture of sweetness and sadness. As we savor the sweet success of the Korus performance, we also felt a tinge of sadness that they’re leaving. But we also know that they’d be back to Sacramento. And when they do, we’re ready to welcome them back to our homes. But for now, au revoir.

And to the Ad Hoc Committee who made it happen, kudos and more power to you!

Not only did the Korus make lovely music, they brought out the lovely music of togetherness amongst the members of the Filipino-American community in Sacramento and Davis. The concert was indeed an evening to remember.



South Korea, German-Filipino firms decline DOTC offer

The Metro Rail Transit (MRT) is left uncertain of its maintenance after

the South Korean firm, Busan Transport Corp, backed out of a new deal while the previous contractor, Schunk Bahn-und Industreitechnik-Comm Buolders and Technology Philippines (SBI-CBT JV), declined a one-month service extension.

According to the South Korean firm, they were awarded the contract without public bidding before Christmas day. It is said that they informed the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) that they only wanted to serve as technical adviser in the three-year maintenance contract.

Apparently, Busan wanted out because they were worried with lawsuits that the company may face after an existing “emergency” is claimed by DOTC.

DOTC is said to reject the cancellation of the South Korean firm since it has the expertise for the service.

The Busan deal was supposed to replace the previous six-month maintenance contract with the Germ-Filipino firm.

Meanwhile, SBI-CBT JV declined the month long extension due to DOTC’s failure to pay in full. According to Roehl Bacar, representative of the previous contractor, the firm was only paid P28 of the agreed amount of P131 million for the six-month deal.

The SBI-CBT JV has filed charges of neglect and misconduct to several MRT 3 executives before the Office of the Ombudsman for the balance of P102-million. They are also planning on pressing charges against DOTC and other MRT officials.

My Bucket Lists from 2016..A New Year promises some

changes in our lives, a yearning to achieve some

Mild December temperatures made it very easy for over

70,000 Winnipeggers to visit the sixteenth year of Canad Inns Winter Wonderland. This number represents our third best show since its inception in the year 2000.

Canad Inns Winter Wonderland is proud to announce that as a result of the success of this year’s show, $16,000 has been donated to two local Winnipeg charities that provide support to young people in our province - KidSport Manitoba and the Red River Exhibition Foundation. This means the cumulative contribution made by this event to local charities is now upwards of $273,000.

crooner Tony Bennett "I love the winter weather. I've got my love to keep me warm". However, I've got my alpine skiing instead to keep me warm! Snowfall is a sign to trade in my sunglasses for ski googles and get ready with my ski gear - skis, boots, poles, gloves, and toque to hit the slopes of a ski resort to relax and enjoy that feeling of spiritual freedom . Avoid being a couch potato - it's time to get outdoors and enjoy winter!

Beckoning is the Frost Fire Mountain Alpine Ski Resort, a little but great ski and snowboard resort in North Dakota located near the town of Walhalla, the 2nd oldest town in the state with a population of 996. Ski resort in North Dakota! Yes, one of the flattest states in the United States has some really great skiing. North Dakota shares the international peace gardens with our province Manitoba.

Carved into the heavily wooded Pembina River gorge in northeastern part of the "Peace Garden" state, Frost Fire has a vertical rise of 350 ft. and a

summit elevation of 1,350 ft. with the longest run of 2,600 ft. (972 meters). Started in 1976 Frost Fire has 10 ski trails (runs) - two for beginners, four for intermediate skiers and four for experts that are serviced by one double chairlift, one triple chairlift and a "magic carpet". Replacing the obsolete rope tow, the magic carpet is a conveyor belt installed at the level of the snow pulling the skier uphill at a slow speed. Perfect for the kids the carpet just let the beginner to just shuffle on and shuffle off without worrying about getting drag around.

Like any ski resort Frost Fire has terrains for all abilities or skill levels with each trail marked with a sign that shows how difficult the particular run is: three different colours are used to rate the difficulty - green, blue and black, i.e., green circle, blue square and black diamond. The green circles (Appleton Meadows, Yarrow, Lion's Tooth) popular for beginners are the easiest; blue squares (Prarie Smoke, Spiderwort, Chicory) for intermediate skiers are more difficult; and the black diamonds (Wild Columbine, Oxeye, Old Man's Beard) for advanced skiers are rated the most difficult.

Besides skiing Frost Fire is also great for snowboarding and tube sliding. Hop on you snowboard or your tube and off you go. The tubing area is fun for all ages. No skills are needed just sit on the tube and tube down the hill. Enjoy the ride, then get a ride back to the top of the slope.

How much will it cost you to experience Frost Fire - full-day ticket from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM is US$40. for adult (13 yrs. old & over); US$30. for child (age 6 to 12); age 5 & under ski free; age 62 & over US$10. off on Thursday; US$10. military discount. Half-day which starts at

1:00 PM is US$35. for adult and US$25. for child.

Amenities such as ski school for ski and snowboard lessons, rental shop, lockers, and food services are available. You don`t have to bring your brown bag: you can order beer battered walleye or breaded chicken breast on a bun or a de luxe bacon cheeseburger served with seasoned fries from the Frost Fire Grill at the day lodge that can be washed down with coffee, tea, soda, beer, and wine.

Frost Fire is popular not only for winter activities but also for its summer musical dinner theatre on weekends of late June and almost the whole month of July. The outdoor amphitheatre overlooking the Pembina Gorge has featured such classics as Fiddler on the Roof, Les Miserables, The Sound of Music, West Side Story, Oklahoma, Godspell & Joseph & the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.

Reigning Miss Universe Pia Alonzo-Wurtzbach expressed her desire to do

a movie project with agent 007, aka James Bond. The actress-beauty queen revealed her wish in an interview as she officially started her reign as Miss Universe with an appearance on “Good Morning America” last Monday (Tuesday, Philippine time).

During the interview Pia also said it would be difficult for her to share the Miss U title with Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutiérrez. Her comment was in reply to a statement made by the pageant’s former owner Donald Trump, who said he would have declared Ariadna and Pia as co-winners if he were in Steve Harvey’s shoes.

While the host of the “Steve Harvey Morning Show” revealed that he has moved on from the

incident, he admitted that he still feels bad for Miss Colombia. He said he tried to reach out and talk to her but haven’t gotten a response.

But even if he feels sorry for Miss Colombia, Harvey maintained that Wurtzbach deserves the crown simply because she got all the votes and the points.

Actress Liza Soberano’s siblings flew in from the US to give her a surprise

party for her 18th birthday. The bohemian-themed party was held at the Club Balai Isabel in Batangas a day before her birthday on Jan. 4. Only family members, on-screen partner Enrique Gil, and a few close friends attended the event.

In a previous interview, the ABS-CBN actress said she wanted to celebrate her debut with charity events. The teen actress, with the help of her talent manager Ogie Diaz and other sponsors, organized a series of charity events late last year.

Open Letter to Premiere Trudeau01 January 2016

Dear Prime Minister Trudeau:I send this correspondence from a perspective of a Christian. I am an immigrant from a Pacific Rim country, currently residing in the Territory of Nunavut; but I used to live in the Prairies for 23 years.

New Year is upon us. Christians searches inwardly for goodwill. What is happening around seems dark, we have an uncertain world. It bewilders the Christians because Christians are “people of the light”. Supposedly the era of colonialism is over, but there are residuals of colonialism that are bent in bringing the world into darkness – the darkness of spawned conflicts in the Middle East, the region where Christ was born.

The recent political exercise affirmed the national conversation that Canadians renounced the tired foreign policies of maintaining war assets in the Middle East. Canadians desire to speak of making life better, rather than

death; light, rather than darkness; tolerance, rather than bigotry. We are locked in a debate about the unwinnable war without end in the Middle East wherein Canada deployed some of her war assets in those war torn region.

As a Canadian, I was thinking about a solution – a solution that has been tried and tested by Allied Forces after WW II. Instead of an army of soldiers with tanks, Canada and her North American and Western Allies dropped anchor off the coasts of Iraq, Libya, and Syria. Instead of guns and bullets, soldiers from dozen nations, bring with them bulldozers and construction materials and equipment.

Canada will take the lead to rebuild what were destroyed. America, Europe, including France, Germany, and Great Britain, Saudi Arabia and the Emirates with their petro dollars shall contribute to help fund a seven year project. Unarmed young able bodied Arab Moslems, Arab Christians, and Arab-Jews

will be hired to help rebuild that were destroyed, and bring back the ravaged nations of Iraq, Libya, and Syria from the darkness of internecine fighting into the light of peace and harmony.

The only way of depriving ISIS of recruits is to design a program that will attract thousands of Syrian, and Iraqi fighters and refuges to return to their respective homeland and build their homes and till their land.

The U.S. led Marshall Plan that was undertaken after WW II was successful in rebuilding Europe. Such similar plan could be recreated and spread the cost equitably among peace loving participating nations.

Canada must rediscover her true identity as peacekeeper and peacemaker the world knew before. That what Canada did is always good and right.

In 2010, Bob and his wife, Judy Grace, decided to build a house in the Arctic, its design is inspired by a Nipa Hut concept. Judy Grace recruited a number of Filipinos; some are Winnipeggers, to work in the Territory of Nunavut.Prior to his migration to Canada in 1987, Bob, served as Technical Assistant to the Constitutional Commission in 1986 that drafted the current Philippine Constitution.

China occupies Panganiban Reef

The Panganiban (Mischief) Reef, which is just 135 nautical

miles away from Palawan, is reported to be under China’s submarine harbor construction by the Kalayaan Atin Ito (KAI) movement.

KAI has just ended its nationwide and territorial campaign, highlighted by the “Freedom Voyage”, to rally against China’s invasion of the country’s maritime domain.

The report needs further validation according to Kalayaan Mayor Eugenio Bito-Onon. The route taken by the volunteers during the voyage was nowhere near the said reef.

Bito-Onon added that China is continuously strengthening its presence on Panganiban Reef.

hoping for better things in 2016 and are hoping to

turn the page as they approach the first half of the season . After making the playoffs last season, the Jets now find themselves near the bottom of the standings. The emergence of netminder Connor Hellebuyck has been one of the few bright spots for the team but the lack of discipline and troubles on the road have been the reocurring storylines.

After dropping a tight contest against the St. Louis Blues, the Winnipeg Jets responded with a 5-2 drubbing of the New York Rangers at the MTS Centre. The top line was on fire as Bryan Little scored twice in the first period and Blake Wheeler had four assists in the game. Connor Hellebuyck turned away 26 of 28 shots outduelling Henrik Lundqvist for the win.

The Jets set out on a quick two game road trip in Alberta facing off against two teams

near the bottom of the standings. Winnipeg fired 45 shots against the Edmonton Oilers goaltender, Cam Talbot, but could only get one past. Talbot made save after save and the Teddy Purcell scored twice in the opening frame to lead the Oilers to a 3-1 victory. The following night, the red-hot Calgary Flames took advantage of a fatigued Jets squad to win their tenth straight game. Flames Johnny Gaudreau had a hat trick in the 4-1 win. Tyler Myers scored the lone Jets goal.

Two games at home was what the doctor ordered for the Jets. Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins visited the MTS Centre but was shut down by Hellebuyck. Bryan Little scored on a penalty shot in the first period and Hellebuyck recorded his first career shutout for a 1-0 win. Two nights later, Jacob Trouba had two goals in the first 40 minutes and was more than enough to stop the Detroit Red Wings 4-1. Little added two

assists and Pavel Datsyuk scored the lone Wings goal.

Winnipeg's road woes continued as they set out on a gruelling five game road swing in eight days. On New Year's Eve, the Jets ended 2015 on a low note falling to the Arizona Coyotes 4-2. Ex-Jet Shane Doan scored twice for the Coyotes and Adam Lowry responded with a pair of goals for the Jets. Doan became the franchise's all-time leading scorer surpassing Jets legend Dale Hawerchuck.

The Jets won the first of two games in California to snap their six game losing skid on the road. Drew Stafford opened the scoring against the San Jose Sharks shorthanded and Joel Armia tallied his first career goal. A couple powerplay goals sealed the deal to give the Jets a 4-1 win over the Sharks. Winnipeg couldn't carry over the momentum over the following night, as they looked sluggish against the Anaheim Ducks. Kevin Bieksa and Rickard Rakell both had a goal and an assist to give the Ducks a 4-1 win. Michael Hutchinson stopped 31 of 35 shots in the loss.

The Winnipeg Jets (18-19-2) close out their road trip in Nashville followed by a stop in Dallas. The Jets will then play host to the Buffalo Sabres and will mark the return of Evander Kane.

Winter is Here: Skating at The Forks in Arctic Glacier Winter Park Now OpenThe moment Winnipeggers have been waiting for is finally here – there’s ice at The Forks! The Canopy Skating Rink, a portion of Arctic Glacier Winter Park, is ready to be skated on.

“It’s time to strap on the skates now that we have our rink,” said Paul Jordan, Chief Executive Officer, The Forks. “The Canopy Skating Rink is open with more to come in the weeks ahead.”

Skating is just a portion of what happens in Arctic Glacier Winter Park at The Forks. Amenities

that are still to come (weather permitting): 1 km of on-land skating trails, toboggan hill, professionally-designed snowboard fun park, and the Great-West Life Snow Lounge — where skaters can hang out near The Port and take a breather on a couch or chair made entirely of snow.

Winnipeggers still need to wait for the Red River Mutual Trail to ice over before they start skating on it. There are still sections of open water, which has to freeze solid before the Red River Mutual Trail is

open to the public. Crews from The Forks will begin building as soon as possible, starting west of the Hugo access point where sections of the Assiniboine River have frozen. An announcement will be made the moment the trail is open, until then The Forks asks that you remain off the ice for your safety.

Arctic Glacier Winter Park attractions are FREE and will be open as they become available from now until March, weather permitting.

Skate rentals are now open, and available at Iceland Skate Rentals located in the tower atrium at The Forks Market. Rates are $3 for children and seniors and only $5 for adults. Skate trainers are also available for $2.

A media man whose principle in life has not been tarnished even in the times of adversity, even at the point of humbling himself in a difficult situation, Jose “Pepito” G. Magpayo will be missed by his family, especially his beloved wife, Cecile and their children, and the countless colleagues, associate and friends. His passing left a void which cannot be replaced by anybody, let alone be a substitute in the promotion of the community through his honest and transparent use of broadcast and print media. His fighting spirit had been nurtured since his younger years in the Philippines and he bravely transplanted his media knowhow to his adopted country, Canada, his dedication to his community through his crusading mission. advancing

The results are in. The Automobile Journalist Association of Canada

(AJAC) announced the Canadian Car of the Year last November in Toronto. The results from the 4-day industry evaluation period called "TestFest" resulted in over 1,900 test drives by over 71 of Canada's top automotive journalists. Based on all the test drives, and intensive evaluations at TestFest, the results

Dear Filipino Associations of Manitoba,On behalf of the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival Pageant Committee, we would like to invite a representative from your association to compete in this year’s 4th Annual Search for The Queen of the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival.

Every year, we have successfully organized this

event with many representatives participating from Filipino Associations in our community. Selecting a representative from your association to compete in this Pageant will benefit your association by: • Spreading awareness about your association, what your group stands for, and what your group is about to the community (such as more members possibly wanting to join). • Creating friendships, networking, and making connections within the community (with more future opportunities and support).• Showing young Filipinas in your association to celebrate and have pride in their culture. • Giving opportunity to have your representative be the next face of The Manitoba Filipino Street Festival 2016.

Overall, this is an amazing opportunity for all Filipino

associations to showcase their beauty and talent to the Filipino community and within Manitoba. This Pageant fully coincides with the same values and ideas as the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival.

Pacquiao to fight Bradley in April Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao, boxing’s only eight-division titleholder, will fight welterweight titleholder Timothy Bradley Jr. for a third time on April 9 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said he had already wired Pacquiao a $2 million advance against his $20 million guaranteed purse to seal the deal. Although

many considered neither of the first two bouts as impressive or competitive, Arum said he believes Bradley is a different fighter than he was the first two times. Pacquiao will be fighting for the first time in 11 months after losing a unanimous decision to Floyd Mayweather in their record-shattering welterweight title unification fight on May 2.
