November 2015

Thank You

Happy fall to all of our CDAA members. As the weather chang-es, your board is busy organizing events for the year. Renewal of your membership with the CDAA is now on, and with that we have a wonderful incentive for you, to encourage new mem-bers to join our association. If you refer a new member you will have the chance to win back this years membership fee! Lets all encourage others to join us and they too can experience all the benefits of being a member of the CDAA.

Our education chair, Kandis Kryzanowski, has been busy arranging speakers for all of our CDAA upcoming general meet-ings and spring seminar to be held in April 2016. If you have a topic or speaker idea please for-ward them to her via her email link listed in this newsletter or on our website.

I would like to thank Henry Schein who sponsored our Sep-

tember general meeting and Danelle Fulawka for organizing a superb evening! It was an even-ing full of networking and cele-brating our newly graduated RDA's. All though we would have liked more graduates to attend, the evening was a success and those in attendance shared in some great food, wine and con-versation. Not to mention a ton of fantastic door prizes!

We recently sent an email to all of our members regarding CA-DA making changes to our Code of Ethics and Practice of Stand-ards. I strongly urge you to re-view these proposed changes, as they will directly effect each of us. If you are concerned with one or more of these proposed changes, its imperative you tell them. Your opinions matter and if you do respond to CADA regarding your concerns of these changes we ask that you include the AADA, who will generate a list of all the concerns of Alberta RDA's. The AADA will aid you in getting your voice heard. CA-

DA's deadline to respond to these proposed changes is November 15th!

CDAA now has their Facebook page up and running again! Thank you to Nadia Hinz for getting this going for us. Please be sure to like our page. Along with our website and newsletter, Facebook will be another tool we will use to reach our member. At our next general meeting I will be asking members to give feedback on whether an RSVP for our general meetings would be something our members would be willing to do. How would we be able to make it easy for our members? Using Facebook events or have members email an RSVP from our website or reply to newsletter email? We are discuss-ing a possible RSVP so we can better judge the food that we or-der, to help reduce possible waste.

I look forward to seeing you at our November General meeting!

Over the years Henry Schein has been a con-tinuous support to the Calgary Dental Assistants Associ-ation. Once again in September they showed their sup-port by sponsoring the New Grad and Networking Evening and we would like to extend our appreciation not only for this, but for the support they have shown over the years.

WANT TO HELP YOUR ASSOCIATION AND YOUR WALLET AT

THE SAME TIME?

We need your help! Since 2013 we have lost several members

who have not renewed their membership with the CDAA. We

think it is because they do not understand the benefits of being

a CDAA member.

We have several new benefits and need your help to share with

your colleagues the benefits of being a Calgary Member includ-

ing the Advocacy for our profession that is supported through

our relationship with the

Association of Alberta Dental Assistants - AADA.

Membership benefits can be viewed on our website at www.calgaryrda.ca under resources.

We are targeting those members who have not renewed or

joined our association since we have added new benefits and

changed our bylaws to include associate members.

REFER A COLLEAGUE TO RENEW or ENCOURAGE

A NEW MEMBER TO JOIN OUR ASSOCIATION AND

GET YOUR NAME ENTERED INTO A DRAW FOR

YOUR MEMBERSHIP PAYMENT TO BE REIM-

BURSED FOR 2016

The member must be either a new member or had not been a

member in 2015. Students do not qualify as a new member for

this drive.

To have your name entered for the draw either send an email to

the AADA at [email protected] with your name and CDAA # and who you have referred or have the person you refer add

your name and CDAA # on the bottom of their enrollment form.

If you are interested in helping our phone committee to reach

out to members please contact the membership coordinator at

CALGARY MEMBERSHIP DRIVE

The Bylaws were reviewed at our June Cross over meeting. The following sug-gested changes to our bylaws will be dis-cussed and voted on at our November meeting. The reason for the delay in hold-ing the motion is to be able to meet the re-quirements of reading the changes at a meet-ing prior the motion being made as well as having them published for the number of days necessary as set out in CDAA Bylaws.

BYLAW #4 – DUTIES OF OFFICERS

Article 4 – The Treasurer shall take charge of all monies; pay such accounts as counter-signed by the President, keep accurate finan-cial records, correspond with the renewal committee Membership Coordinator regard-ing CDAA annual local dues and a qualified accountant in preparing financial statements.

Change is housekeeping to remove the name “renewal committee” and change it to Mem-bership Coordinator to be consistent with what we are calling this position

BYLAW #5 – COMMITTEES, REPRE-SENTATIVES AND APPOINTMENTS

Article 3 – Standing Appointments shall be a) Archivist, b) Parliamentarian, c) School Advisory Rep, Membership Coordinator, Facebook Editor, Website Editor – All ap-pointed by the President.

Change is to add the positions of standing appointments to include the added positions of Membership Coordinator, Facebook Edi-tor and Website Editor as well correct the position of School Advisor to School Advi-sory Rep.

The Alex Dental Health Bus (DHB) program was launched in January 2013 and serves those in identified high needs areas and elementary schools to access much needed oral health care. It is the first model of its kind in Western Cana-da. The DHB program is offering the opportunity for RDAs to volun-teers and assist with elements of program delivery. Volunteering with the DHB program may be included

with RDA continuing education competencies and letters attesting to this support can be provided. Your contribution to those less fortunate is greatly ap-preciated and offers engagement and service to oth-ers. If anyone is in-

terested in participating, please contact Darlene at [email protected] or [email protected] for more information.

40 years and met some great dentists,

staff and patients and the learning

courses were excellent too!”

We, from the CDAA, wish you well

Remember to review the draft CADA Code of Ethics draft and Standards of Practice draft that

are posted on the CADA website in the College of Alberta Dental Assistants “Member Area” in

the “College Highlights” section at www.abrda.ca

Why does this affect you? These documents can be used to determine whether you could be

charged with unprofessional conduct!

As you review these drafts please ask yourself “how does each section of this document impact

me and my practice as an RDA?”

For example: “Section 1.3 Consent The RDA and DA respect the patient’s right to choose and

therefore seek informed consent from the patient prior to providing services by presenting com-

plete information, recognizing the patient’s right to withdraw consent at any time.”

Do I understand what is meant by “presenting complete information” and who is “providing

services”?

For example: “Section 3.5 Communication c) The RDA and DA demonstrate professional deco-

rum including appropriate use of social media.”

Do I understand what is meant by “use of social media” and does this mean at work or also in

my personal use?

The AADA would like to compile all of the comments that are sent to CADA so they can post

those on their website and allow all RDAs to be aware of what concerns have been raised about

the content of these drafts.

Please send your comments on the CADA draft documents in writing by email both to CADA

at [email protected] AND to the AADA at [email protected] by November 15th.

November 2015 News from AADA

The Association of Alberta Dental Assistants held their 3rd annual provincial “Tea & Talk” on October 3rd in Red Deer. This was an exciting opportunity for RDAs across the province to informally gather and discuss the future of our profession and issues of importance to Dental Assistants. There is no other forum in Alberta for RDAs across our province to do this! This year there were several important and current issues to discuss. These included: reviewing the draft CADA Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice; a letter from the Canadian Dental Assistants Association inviting AADA to enter into discussions with them about the opportunity for AADA to become an Organizational Member repre-senting Alberta RDAs; issues to address with Government; and WCB coverage for dental office staff. The AADA will be pursuing a number of these issues in the coming year on behalf of RDAs. To help the AADA

work on behalf of RDAs, they are asking that we act now to carefully review the draft CADA Code of Conduct

and Standards of Practice that are posted on the CADA website in their “Member News” section. As you review

these drafts please ask yourself “how does each section of this document impact me and my practice as an RDA?” Why does this affect you? These documents will be used to determine whether you could be charged with unprofessional conduct! The AADA would like to compile all of the comments that are sent to CADA so they can post those on their website and allow all RDAs to be aware of what concerns have been raised about the content of these drafts. Please send your comments in writing by email both to CADA and cc’d to AADA by November 15th. Another way that you can influence the future of our profession is to help AADA support the work of the Canadian Dental Assistants Association. The $35.00 annual subsidy that RDAs had been paying through our CADA license fee to send to the Canadian association is no longer being collected by CADA as of July 1, 2015. That means that RDAs in Alberta currently have no influence or ability to contribute to the valuable work that the Canadian Dental Assistants Association is doing on behalf of our profession on a national level. Why does this affect you? The Canadian association is responsible for representing us at the highest level of professional initiatives nation-wide. The Canadian association was the initiator behind: creating the National Dental Assisting Examining Board to ensure standardized testing and a way to ensure labor mobility across Canada was available; the Canadian Dental Assisting Educators group which ensures a standardized education across the country; national recognition of Den-tal Assisting as a profession; ensuring RDAs were participants and contributors in developing the recent Canadian Oral Health Strategy; collaborating with other national health organizations on our behalf and in doing other work that is critical to our profession overall. The work they are now pursuing on our behalf includes: research specific to our profession; developing position papers that will pertain to the practice of dental assisting; engaging RDAs on a national level to identify issues affecting the profession and then acting on our behalf to resolve those issues; work-ing on ensuring labor mobility across Canada for our profession; assessing International credentials; and, acting as a conduit for provincial organizations to work together for the benefit of all dental assistants in Canada. You are invited to support the Canadian Dental Assistants Association with your donation of $35.00 made out to the AADA to help our provincial association represent us with a seat on the Canadian Board! Let’s all do our part to help AADA in their role of advocates for our profession! Become engaged now in providing financial support and feedback to our professional associations and support their work on behalf of all Alberta RDAs! For more information check out the AADA website http://advocacyaada.wordpress.com/ or contact the AADA office email: [email protected] or ph: 780-987-2022 The AADA Board of Directors looks forward to your attendance and to meeting you on Saturday from 2:00-4:00 pm on April 2nd for their 4th annual AGM and Elections in Red Deer! Each AGM ends with an open forum to give you a chance to express your views, concerns and issues that impact your career and practice as an RDA.
