We’ve been on quite a roll recently with members getting placements in shows directly through listings we’ve run for Music Supervisors. In just the last month or so, we’ve had several songs picked up for Sons Of Anarchy, and another for a show I’m not allowed to mention yet.

I’m mentioning this because as we find ourselves getting more and more requests directly from music supervisors, we are also getting feedback from them about our members’ meta tagging, or lack thereof!

Meta tags are the information embedded into your MP3 file. There are many different opinions as to what should be in your meta tags, but one thing is for certain. You need to have the song title, your name, and your contact info in your meta tags.

There are lots of videos online that will show you how to do put information in your meta tags. We have addressed the issue in TAXI 2.0, but until we roll it out, I’d like to STRONGLY recommend that you learn how to get your name, the song title, your email address, and your phone number into your meta tag on every song you pitch.

We send a list of all song/tracks, the member names, and their contact info to each industry person who receives music from TAXI. However, we recently had a situation where the music supervisor dropped a TAXI member’s song onto her computer’s desktop, then lost contact list we sent her.

Not knowing who the TAXI members was, or that the song even came from a TAXI member, she resorted to Google to find the song’s creator. She found the song in a publisher’s catalog, and reached out to the publisher to license the song.

In the end, the publisher got 50% of the money from that placement, but did nothing to earn it! The good news is that the publishing deal for that song originally came through a TAXI listing.

But if the song had the meta data in it, the music supervisor would have contacted the member directly and 100% of the income would have gone to him.

We are now routinely putting a TAXI graphic in every MP3 that goes out from TAXI, and we do have the problem solved in the upcoming release of TAXI 2.0. But for the near future, you’d be very smart to learn about meta tagging and make sure that your submissions have the most critical information contained in the MP3 file.

Google, “meta tagging MP3 files,” and you’ll find plenty of tutorials in print and video.

Please include a note specifying the aspects you would like the listener to address. For example, some members like to have their craft (lyrics, rhyme, structure, etc.) closely critiqued.
