FACTS OF A FILM INDUSTRY

Galicia, a region in northwestern Spain, has a population of 2.7 million and an autonomous government – Xunta de Galicia – with specific competencies in the audiovisual sector. Alongside its independent television, TVG, Xunta de Galicia acts as a leading promoter of audiovisual content, through the large number of production and service companies based in the Galicia region.

Thanks to its magnificent countryside and the competence of its professionals, Galicia has been the chosen location for large-scale international co-productions, such as Death and the Maiden (Roman Polansky, 1994), Road to Santiago (Robert Young, 1999), Dagon (Stuart Gordon, 2001), Pilgrims (Colinne Serreau, 2006) or the recent The Way (Emilio Estévez, 2010) which have attracted stars such as Anthony Quinn, Charlton Heston, Sigourney Weaver, Ben Kingsley or Martin Sheen to the Galician scene. At the same time, major successes from Spanish cinema such as Los lunes al sol (Fernando León de Aranoa, 2002), Bad Education (Pedro Almodóvar, 2004) and Los girasoles ciegos (José Luis Cuerda, 2009) have been shot either in part or wholly in the region, utilising local technical and artistic talent.

Recently the Galician audiovisual sector has been experiencing an extraordinary growth; proof of this is the enormous success of the thriller Celda 211 (Daniel Monzón), the largest commercial success of Spanish cinema in the last years, which obtained 9 Awards from the Spanish Film Academy. International hits such as Oscar® Winner The Sea Inside (Alejandro Amenábar) are part of Galician film production. And Pedro Almodóvar chose Santiago de

Compostela to start the shoting of his last film, La piel que habito.

Galicia is also a leader in animation. In 2001 a Galician studio produced the first European full-length 3D film, El bosque animado (Ángel de la Cruz, Manolo Gómez). Since then the Spanish Film Academy has given awards to large numbers of animation films produced in this region, which have also been exported worldwide: Midsummer Dream (2002), Pinoccho 3000 (2004), Pérez, el ratoncito de tus sueños (2007), Nocturna (2008), amongst others.

Added to this is a diversity of formats and numerous TV Series and content derived from Galician Television, with excellent results in both fiction as well as the documentary genres.

Galicia is favourably positioned for future investment and as a pace setter in the audiovisual sector, not only owing to the entrepreneurialism of its corporate infrastructure, but also to its solid roster of producers, screenwriters, technicians and actors. But the heritage does not end here: we possess magnificent natural resources, from mountains to hundreds of kilometres of coastline, a wealth of outstanding cultural and architectural treasures, visited yearly by millions of pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago, all coupled with a vibrant and robust spirit of enterprise.

All this drives us to seek new opportunities and challenges throughout the world, new screens for our productions and new pathways to open. We proudly present here and now the very best of our production output.

After a long night of discussion, and determined to split up, a couple of lovers pass the lastmoments of their relationship by walking the city they are visiting.

Eva is a young Galician woman who lives, since completing her university studies, in Barcelona. An art restorer, her return to Galicia has led her to work at the Samos Monastery. Eva works efficiently but she is dispassionate. While taking a break she is calm but she watches her phone, awaiting news of her lover. He is a Catalan lawyer who has promised to join her at the week-end. The fact that he is married and has a son makes Eva doubt he will keep his promise. Despite her fears, he comes and meets Eva at the Santiago de Compostela airport. However, after the first few hours of excitement about the meeting, the situation suddenly changes. The relationship they have is insincere and unstable and, after a bitter argument, the couple agrees to bring it to an end. Even so, the lovers decide to spend the next day in the city together.

So, from morning until nightfall, they will walk through Compostela while living out the final moments of their relationship. The city will reflect their moods in a physical and emotional journey through museums, churches, streets and parks, during which Eva will rethink their life situation. When the tension between them becomes unsustainable, each one will definitely go his and her own way. Her lover will disappear at night in a bar. Eva, meanwhile, will decide to continue their journey alone through the city. Finally, a meeting with Manuel, a peculiar young university student, will change her plans unexpectedly.

Miraculously they wash up somewhere on the coast. They grow up there, at the foot of a lighthouse, and live happily for some years, surviving by picking up stuff brought in by the sea, the crebas. Until they set off on an existential journey that leads them back to their origins, with their Cow as a guide.

A walking-film of absurd quests, inner journeys and unexpected encounters: the Crebinskys travel without knowing where they are going and end up finding out where they come from.

1911, Arga, a rural village in the northwestern Spanish region of Galicia. A terrible curse falls on the evil Marchioness of Mariño and her son, transforming him into a werewolf. It’s now over fifty years since the adventures of Juan Salvo, “El Eternauta”, were first published. Even today this comic book continues to surprise thousands of readers all over the world after introducing, some point in 1957, a new way of understanding comic strips: it transcended the limits of mere escapism to become an adult and politically committed story.

The Argentine artist and scripwriter of this comic book, Héctor Oesterheld, created a highly metaphorical and political comic strip that, contrary to the norm at the time, took place in Buenos Aires, far away from the usual settings depicted in most other comic strips (US, France). Unfortunately, Héctor Oesterheld was a victim of the military repression and, to this day, he is one of many missing persons that fills an entire country’s memory with sorrow.

But Elsa Sánchez, his partner and closest ally during many years is still with us. She is the wife of “El Eternauta”; the woman who survived Héctor’s disappearance and the murder of their four daughters: Beatriz, Estela, Diana y Marina. The film portrays a woman who managed to overcome a dire situation and to forge ahead during those difficult years, when repression and death were ever-present, protagonists of one of the darkest periods in Argentina’s history... A woman who never shared her husband’s radical ideology and who, at all times, wanted him to abandon all political affiliation so that his life and that of their daughters would not be at risk... A woman who, in short, proved to be full of courage and guts and who, today, is willing to talk about those distressing events.

Following a popular romance, we discover a tragic event which took place in 1937 during the Spanish civil war.

October 1937. Asturias is taken by the Francoist army. Republican fighters try to flee by sea. A groupof Galician anti-fascist fighters, from the Galician battalion led by the anarchist José Moreno Torres,fail in their attempt to flee and head toward Galicia. Their trail disappears in the Acebo mountains, on the border between Asturias and Galicia.

Neither their families nor their partners ever learned of the group’s destiny. Nevertheless, despite therepression imposed during the Francoist dictactorship, a popular romance began to circulate in the area of the Acebo range; it tells the last moments of this group.

In Broken Memories, children who witnessed these events or heard accounts of them tell the of the cruel destiny suffered by Commander Moreno and his partners.

For the seamen in Lira, Costa da Morte, the Prestige oil spill provided the opportunity to change their relation-ship with a sea depleted by overfishing and pollution. The first Marine Reservation of Fishing Interest was founded at the request of the traditional fishing community in Lira, an initiative which placed them as an international model for innovation in the industry. Nevertheless, change takes time and causes tension and issues. Fishermen and women from Lira, who gather shellfish, leading characters in this documentary, give us an up to date view on this environmental issue facing traditional fishing communities around the world, and to all of us who are becoming increasingly aware of ocean overexploitation and the extinction of species.

The filmmaker Juan Pinzás goes on a physical and also an inner journey in search of some lost images that he filmed in the 80s. The journey takes him from Madrid to Galicia in Spain and on the quest for these images he meets with various characters who help him in his undertaking, such as the actors Paul Naschy and Javier Gurruchaga whose personal worlds are examined in the film. Finally in Vigo, his home city, of which he presents a remarkable portrait, he finds an old film in Super-8mm with the missing images. The catharsis is produced with the viewing of the old film which turns out to be a tribute to cinema and this signals the end of the filmmaker’s introspective journey.

Documentary about the secrets of this German hermit who created sculptures with stones, walked almost naked and lived 40 years in the Coast of Death.

THE RESTLESS MAN talks about the life and work of a person called “Man”. A German artist who lived40 years as a hermit among marine rocks. The marine rocks were a culture medium that created a special, singular artist’s place that still lingers on the Coast of Death in Galicia (Spain). “Man”, the last German Romantic, colonized a scene, building his 9-square-metre home inspired by the Ronchamp Cathedral (designed by Le Corbusier). Man took pictures of his enviroment and of his masterful work.

He painted, sculpted and synthesized his thought forms in many aphorisms. At age 67 he decided to end his life after seeing his museum destroyed for the third time.
