Country by country, GRW influenced law reform and systemic change to end violence against women and girls. GRW responded to a request from leaders in the Republic of Georgia to address a deadly gap in implementing thecountry's domestic violence law -- the need for law enforcement agencies to quickly identify situations most likelyto result in serious harm to victims. In response, GRW developed a risk assessment tool that enables Georgianpolice to identify the most dangerous domestic violence cases. As a result, police can now intervene more quicklyto prevent further injury and death to women who are most at risk. Very importantly, GRW worked closely withvictims of domestic violence in developing the risk assessment tool, to make sure it addresses domestic violence asit is actually experienced by Georgian women. GRW and its Moldovan partners launched the country’s first court monitoring program, and issued a reportevaluating the courts’ response to violence against women and girls. The launch of the report culminated a two-year project that included training for court monitors, observation in the Moldovan courts, and review of sexualviolence, trafficking, and domestic violence cases. The report makes concrete recommendations, some of which arealready being implemented -- including further training for judges and prosecutors which GRW will conduct inChisinau, Moldova in July 2019. Australia’s commitment to ending extremely high levels of violence against women and girls brought GRW toMelbourne and Sydney in the spring of 2018. Seven GRW trainers from Minnesota's judiciary, law enforcement, prosecution, and probation agencies trained their Australian colleagues on how to enforce laws prohibitingviolence against women and girls. Our team of volunteers and staff worked with the Minnesota Department of Health and the MinnesotaInternational Center on an initiative to prevent female genital mutilation in Minnesota. GRW collaborated withcommunity partners to research and develop recommendations for law enforcement and the legal community toensure an effective response to this human rights abuse. GRW promoted global accountability to end violence by publishing Time for a Change: The Need for anInternational Treaty on Violence Against Women. GRW also influences global policy on violence against women and girls through our ongoing work with the UnitedNations. In 2018, this included monitoring internationally-accepted standards for the delivery of essential servicesto women and girls who are victims of domestic violence. With 193 member countries of the United Nations, thiswork dramatically increases GRW’s global impact. Our focus on system and legal reform to ensure women's and girls’ human right to be free from violence is aunique and world-changing mission.
