The main theme of the Society is Agriculture and is reflected in the logo, that is the Production of goods through the growing of plants and fungi, and Raising of domesticated animals

Till date, we have numerous activities added up to our accomplishment board which are of educational, recreational and charity-oriented nature. The Agricultural Society invites you to thoroughly rummage our report and be part of its success. j

Dear friends,

I have the immense pleasure to bring forward the achievements of the UoM Agricultural Society during the year 2012/13. It is indeed with great honour that I associate myself with the praiseworthy effort of the Agricultural Society team who has organised several activities to meet about its objectives. The activities organised this year would not have been possible and successful without the help and cooperation of the students at the Faculty. I would like to congratulate and thank all friends for having put some good effort at organising activities on the University Campus this year and helped to give a better perception of Agriculture among the students here. I would also like to thank the Dean and Lecturers at the Faculty and the Staff at the University Farm for their help and support. Though our Faculty may be the smallest in terms of student population, we are very well known for our unity and it has indeed be a great pleasure for me to work with the members of the Faculty of Agriculture. I hope this good atmosphere prevails.

I seize this opportunity to wish you all best of luck in your future endeavours.

The AGRICULTURAL AWARENESS CAMPAIGN is an initiative of the UoM

Agricultural Society 2012/13 to sensitise & create an awareness of Agriculture among

a larger, important public, the youth. It is a fact that Agriculture is perceived as

unattractive by Mauritian youth & they are reluctant to choose it for a career.

With an increasing population and rises in international food commodities, there is a

need to boost up the agricultural sector. Engagement of youth in agriculture is critical

as Mauritius has an ageing population, who is less likely to adopt new technologies

for agricultural development. Since students in the lower grades appear to have

already shaped their perception towards agriculture, it is best to target new efforts at

children in their young ages.

The UoM Agricultural Society has been to several colleges to inform the younger

generation more about the world of agriculture. The interactive session at the

institutions consisted of:

Presentation on the importance, different aspects and the wide job

opportunities in the agricultural sector and

Discussion session at the send to allow the young express their perception and

any queries

This campaign is expected to carry on and target as many schools as possible.

Several football tournaments were organised in collaboration with the Ministry of

Youth and Sports and the Students’ Union. Those tournaments would not have been

successful without the participation and help of students from the Faculty of

Agriculture.

The Faculty has ever been innovative in ways to promote sport by organizing intra-

faculty indoor football tournaments. While it is true that football is mostly played on

the pitch outdoors, the same sportsman spirit, fun and teamwork are present in the

outdoor football tournaments that were organised. Moreover, this year we have been

able to gather some female teams and they were even encouraged to participate in

intra faculty football tournaments.
